I had corned beef hash at Jack's for the first time in a while last Friday. I hereby revoke my recommendation of Jack's for CBH. They no longer make it in house and use a standard canned version tasting suspiciously like Hormel.

I haven't been there, but I hear good things about Mac's Restaurant at 812 Higgins Rd. in Park Ridge.

Thanks for the tour de force post. For completeness sake, I'd also add Jack's Restaurant in Skokie to your list as well as The Bagel. Both make fine home made versions, and I strongly agree with Evil Ronnie's recommendation of Manny's.

Not sure if something has changed, but I ate at Jack's today (after not being able to arrive at Patty's in time) and when I asked if the corned beef hash was made in-house, our waitress said it came out of a can (and tasted the part - my dining companion ordered it). I would steer away from the corned beef hash at Jack's, and the biscuits and gravy for that matter too which featured too-soft biscuits and a gravy that seemed to lack the bite of pepper, but seemed to include several drops of lemon juice.

Pursuant to the title of this thread, sadly, I don't think Jack's serves the best anything anymore. For me, the place is a shadow of its former self. It used to be a real gem and a great 24-hour oasis between the northern suburbs and the city. No so any longer.

BR wrote:It's interesting that you mention that because once upon a time, I used to like Jack's quite a bit, but I don't know if I was just young and not discriminating enough (and drunk) or if today's meal was different from my former Jack's experiences. But I notice that the same family still runs the place (although perhaps a younger relative), so I'm not quite sure what to think but what a letdown today after getting myself all excited for Patty's.

Dusting off a ~15 year old thread to comment on this. I had the CBH from Tweet a few weeks ago and was very disappointed.
