I had corned beef hash at Jack's for the first time in a while last Friday. I hereby revoke my recommendation of Jack's for CBH. They no longer make it in house and use a standard canned version tasting suspiciously like Hormel.

Interesting. They told me it was hommeade, but it mattered not - i found the CBH to be mundane.

I still love their hash browns and their corned beef sandwich, however.

The corned beef hash is not homemade but at least they admit to it, which is about the only good thing you'll hear from me.

I was one of those unfortunate souls who was in the office and working on the Friday after Christmas. Lunch time came around and I was clearly in a "breakfast for lunch" mood. I decided to give Mrs V's on River Road, just a few hundred feet up the road from Paradise Pup a shot.

The menu's pronouncement of "chef made" corned beef hash caught my attention. It turned out to be, well, meh. Their chef may have opened the can of hash. But, that appeared to be the extent of his preparation of it. It did come with three freshly poached eggs, a huge mound of hashbrowns, and toast. The whole thing was a little on the pricey side. 12 bucks with tax and tip on top of that.

Mrs. V's seems like a friendly neighborhood place, but not for corned beef hash.

Since my office is across the street from the Berghoff Cafe, lately I have been running there for lunch more often than I should. They have a corned beef hash special at lunchtime. The hash is homemade, comes with their excellent rye bread and they start the eggs as soon as you order. It's a hearty and delicious meal.

I wish I had pictures to share with everybody, but I just had the best non-traditional corned beef hash that I have ever had at Broadway Cellars.

Big chunks of house made corned beef, diced sweet potato, onion, and brussel sprouts with two perfectly poached eggs and a mustard sauce.

This is only available for brunch on the weekends, and when I go back again next weekend I promise to take pictures.

Not sure if something has changed, but I ate at Jack's today (after not being able to arrive at Patty's in time) and when I asked if the corned beef hash was made in-house, our waitress said it came out of a can (and tasted the part - my dining companion ordered it). I would steer away from the corned beef hash at Jack's, and the biscuits and gravy for that matter too which featured too-soft biscuits and a gravy that seemed to lack the bite of pepper, but seemed to include several drops of lemon juice.

Pursuant to the title of this thread, sadly, I don't think Jack's serves the best anything anymore. For me, the place is a shadow of its former self. It used to be a real gem and a great 24-hour oasis between the northern suburbs and the city. No so any longer. :(

It's interesting that you mention that because once upon a time, I used to like Jack's quite a bit, but I don't know if I was just young and not discriminating enough (and drunk) or if today's meal was different from my former Jack's experiences. But I notice that the same family still runs the place (although perhaps a younger relative), so I'm not quite sure what to think but what a letdown today after getting myself all excited for Patty's.

It's not you imagination. The food used to be much better. Jack's has fallen on hard times. It started with the smoking ban which, in Skokie where Jack's is located, came two or three years before the smoking ban went into effect statewide. That killed their late night/post bar business and caused them to start closing at 11:00 and eventually 8:00. The other shoe dropped when the economy went south and their business tanked to the point where they are now only open for breakfast and lunch.

Jack's is the kind of family owned neighborhood place I like to support, and I try to do so as much as I can, but the food has taken a turn for the worse and I'm down to only a few dishes that I will order there.

I never understood why good hash is so very hard to find in Chicago. I used to settle for the place on Division just west of wood(the name escapes me) but it was the large chunk style which I don't like as much as a well diced version. The Depot on Roosevelt does a pretty good job these says but, no one seems to be able to knock it out of the park. I really love roast beef hash, but good luck finding a great one. I just keep making it at home from the James Beard cookbook. I would gladly pay to avoid dicing meat and potato's for 25 minutes.

Although it's quite a schlep from the city, I'd like to throw Reece's Restaurant in Algonquin into the mix. I've had breakfast there a couple of times over the summer and I've been impressed on every count. Everything, down to the hot sauce, is house made from scratch. I'm hoping to do a full post on this place soon, but specifically on the corned beef hash front this place is a top contender. The CBH is freshly made to order and you have the option to add onions, peppers or both (obviously, adding both is the way to go).

Dusting off a 15 year old thread to comment on this. I had the CBH from Tweet a few weeks ago and was very disappointed. Our server commented that it's been voted best in the city. Not sure by whom. It was cubes of lunch meat corned beef with some onions and peppers over a (fantastic) hash brown patty. I like my corned beef chunky and shreddy, with crispy bits as well as some tender bites, lean and fatty. My gold standard is at Edgebrook Coffee Shop. Had some this past weekend that restored my spirits.

The best Corned Beef Hash in Chicago is in Milwaukee. McBob's Pub & Grill makes all their Corned Beef in house. It is slow cooked, making it tender and flavorful beyond compare. Totally worth the trip north.
