I like the Cheng family and I really like their food, but they fail health inspections way too frequently.

Our last two to-go meals have had mistakes, which is frustrating. And given that it's a 20 minute drive each way, we've just sucked it up and dealt with it, but I think our takeout days are over. Looking forward to eating there in person sometime in the future.

(Most recent order: Stir fried fish with ginger and green onion had neither ginger nor green onion in it, but did have mushrooms, onions and ham. Not sure what dish we got, but it didn't resemble the stir fried fish with ginger and green onion we've gotten in the past. Time before that we ordered cumin lamb (for me) and a beef dish (for my husband), and instead got two beef dishes. At least we got the stir fried fish dish we were expecting, or I would have gone hungry.)

I recently ate lunch at Sun Wah with a friend, and was shocked at how poorly guests are received. I made a reservation for lunch by phone and that is where the issues started....Sun Wah has adopted the policy of requiring face masks, regardless of current CDC guidelines....that is fine, had I known. My friend and I are both vaccinated, and had one mask between us....the greeter (one of the servers) did not want to let us sit down without donning one....fine, but then provide masks for those of us who are not informed of your policy. No neighboring stores had any available....we finally went in one at a time and had the server bring the mask back to the other.
The entry looks like a dump...as you enter, the first things to see are several tables piled high with empty boxes, likely for take-out, but a bad first impression, as well as not having a greeter anywhere near the door (nor for several minutes), we thought it may have closed since we reserved. The restaurant itself also looked tired and dirty.
Once seated, it took 15 minutes to get a server for us to confirm we had ordered the duck dinner and take our drink order. The meal was as wonderful as I remembered, nicely carved tableside, with soup and fried rice soon following. Priced at $53 (no-where to be found on the menu or on-line) we felt it was lovely and were glad we did not blow them off and eat a nice Vietnamese meal on Argyle instead.
First impressions make a big difference and Sun Wah does not seem to care. Combined with past health department issues, it makes it less likely we will go back soon.

It's been very clearly posted on the website for weeks that mask-wearing is still required for dine-in. Additionally, Sun Wah has required mask wearing for all diners not actively eating/drinking since when they reopened their dining room for the first time last year. A casual browsing of the wayback machine at archive.org confirms that this policy has been consistent throughout the pandemic era.

I understand that the current CDC guidance is that vaccinated individuals are not legally mandated to wear masks indoors (although that might be changing soon), but it is a private business' prerogative to require their patrons to be masked, not customers' choice. As a city dweller, I have grown accustomed to ensuring I am carrying a mask with me whenever I leave home, as I would with my wallet, keys and mobile phone.

As of April, the unlisted price of a duck dinner was $48, so a modest increase of $5 is acceptable in my opinion given the challenges of the past year.

Here is the website posting which contains all the info needed on the Sun Wah "Bring Your Own Turkey – 2021" Sun Wah will cook your turkey in same style to the Hong Kong Style Roast Duck.
How do I submit my OWN turkey?
If your turkey is frozen, bring it into the restaurant BEFORE Monday, November 22, 2021 no later than 5:00pm. Earliest submitted birds will have the best choice of Thanksgiving Thursday pick-up time slots. Ideally, our service works best with turkeys falling between 10 to 15 lbs. Cost for this BYO service will be at $3.50 per pound (pre-cooking weight). A $15 deposit will be collected at time of drop-off for EACH turkey. This is payable by cash, VISA or MasterCard.

Has anyone had a turkey done by Sun Wah? We are planning on it this year as something different but curious if anyone has first had experience and how it turned out

    Hi,

The Asian branch of my family obtain Chinese BBQ turkeys at Argyle, though not from Sun Wah. I know they like it, though I have not tried it.

I did find this artcle from the NYT on Chinese BBQ Turkey with a part devoted to Sun Wah.

You have definitely sparked an itch to order one.

    Thanks!

DClose -- The Sun Wah Beijing Turkey is now a staple at our family Thanksgiving dinner. We order two of them so that we have plenty of leftovers for the freezer. It comes ready for carving and it includes a pint-size container of the roasting juices.

We have been told by our hosts that this item is our ticket for admission. No Sun Wah Turkey; no seat at the table for us.

This will be an epic meal. Duck Dinner at Sun Wah w/Vin Wines. Unfortunately I'll be working.

What's better than a Beijing Duck dinner at Chicago's legendary Sun Wah restaurant? How about that same dinner with two of our favorite Central Coast winemakers, Andrew Jones of Field Recordings and Tim Fulnecky of Mr. Brightside!

Andrew and Tim will pair their wines with a ridiculously delicious array of authentic Hong Kong-style BBQ including, of course, the Cheng family's James Beard Award-winning duck.

Expect to taste good wines, eat good food and make new friends. These tickets will go fast!

    When: Monday, May 22nd, 6:30pm
Where: Sun Wah, 5039 N. Broadway, Chicago
Cost: $85 per person, all inclusive

This does sound amazing; I tried some basic searching and couldn't figure out how to get reservations/tickets. Am I missing something or is there a link that could be shared to potentially get a seat at this delicious table?

This info came out to email subscribers. I'd imagine you could call the Chicago store and ask - 773-489-3454.

I was wondering the same thing. My first thought was a very large plate of crab rangoon (I have little kids...). My second thought was that Gary probably doesn't order crab rangoon. Crispy noodles is a much better guess.

If I know Gary, that's the chow fun, ordered straight up and crispy and yes, they do look great!

As guessed below. It plain chow fun noodles, crisp. One of the better Sun Wah versions in recent memory.

And yes I do eat Crab Rangoon. Most often when having Chinese with a group that includes youngsters.

Had dinner here on Saturday night. It was hopping at 730 but sat us right away. Looked there was about 10 groups of walk ins waiting but they seemed to be seated fairly quick.

Duck was as good as ever ($60) as was the chow fun. Wine was still byob but with a $10 corkage fee. But they only charged us for 1 bottle which was nice. Still one of the best bang for your buck meals around!
