We've enjoyed Mesa Urbana. It's a bit pricey when you compare it to nearby Monica's (our favorite in the area) or Los Huaraches (just a couple doors down, and solid but nothing amazing). They're obviously going for more of a Bayless-like experience than taqueria. Good drinks menu, tasty food. Haven't been there in months, need to get back there. I'd tried to suggest it for the North Lunch group, but lacking a lunch-specific menu, it's a little high priced for lunch.

Oh no! This was a staple when I worked in Skokie, and is one of the closest restaurants to where my sons live.

Aww too bad about El Tipico. I convinced my ex wife that the queso chihuahua she was eating was from the dog and managed to not be murdered in my sleep.

While this little Oaxacan restaurant might not be plain Mexican it does do Mexican just fine.

It never hurts to have a little extra variety. :)

For the most geographically convenient replacement, a casual semi-authentic (they have cemitas but no tripa or lengua, keeps me away) small family owned spot opened very late last year.

There is now a sign on it for El Nuevo Tipico, and it's open (there's a lighted OPEN sign in the window). Google tells me that their new telephone number is (847) 410-7611. The only website menu I could find for it is on the Uber Eats website, here, and it looks pretty much like the menu for its previous incarnation.

Especially when drinks are a part of the decision. I'm not a fan of La Principal or That Little Mexican Cafe, so the ten minute drive west is well worth it. Food definitely isn't as good as Libertad though.

Another place just down the road is Los Comales in Niles. It's your typical taco joint and the wife and I like their 3 taco dinner which comes with your choice of fillings and you can mix and match and the ubiquitous rice and beans.
We've never eaten inside, we usually pick up or get delivery.

I've not been to Los Comales but it is just slightly north of Arex Foods, a tidy well curated middle-eastern grocery. Same side of the street.

I've never been in Arex Foods though I've passed by thousands of times. I've wanted to try Detroit Kabob House which is next door to Arex, but always seem to forget.

I'll have to check out both and see what I've been missing. Anyone ever eat at Detroit Kabob?

Detroit Kabob falls into the "okay" category. Nothing memorable, but not bad.

Yes, after some initial enthusiasm, that was pretty much the consensus on the dedicated thread.

Yes, exactly. Detroit Kabob House is just barely the right side of ok. Arex, on the other hand, is well worth a visit if for only for containers of freshly made tahini, which I think they buy somewhere in Detroit.

It's been a few years since I've eaten there, but one of the highlights of eating in was a big tray of escabeche on every table: virtually unlimited picked jalapenos, carrots, onions and (iirc) cauliflower.

I'm guessing that's no longer available during the pandemic -- someone else touched it -- but I'd hope they still will serve the escabeche.

We got carryout tonight from El Nuevo Tipico. (Delivery options are available from Grubhub and Seamless.) Same place:

And you can once again dine indoors, if you're willing:

I placed our order over the phone with the restaurant, and was told the food would be ready in 10-15 minutes. Ten minutes later when I arrived, I went inside and paid, and then waited outside for another 15 minutes until the food was ready.

Although the menu is similar to the previous El Tipico, the food is not. The carne asada is, well, let's just say it's not recommended. The mole sauce on their enchiladas in mole is very tasty and decently spicy, but they don't use enough of it. The horchata is good. So is the tres leches cake for dessert. The best item may have been the chips and salsa to go (reasonable extra cost of $2.75 when not dining in); the chips were freshly made, and they came with ample servings (12-14 ounces each) of three sauces (tomato, tomatillo, chipotle), all of them at least somewhat spicy.

We dined on the patio at Cafe el Tapatio Glenview tonight. It was a beautiful evening with a nice breeze and while I thought it might be too noisy, that wound up not being the case. Staff was very friendly. Despite the sign in the window requesting busboy, server & kitchen help, we didn’t encounter any service issues. We had the shrimp ceviche appetizer, 2 taco dinner, kid’s enchilada, and 3 enchilada dinner. Everything was fresh and tasty. They were doing steady business of both dine-in and carry-out. Also busy was the Churro Parlor next door. Daughter was the only one who had room and got herself the “Hazel” - Nutella-filled with rainbow sprinkles. Highly recommended by Audrey if you are in the market for something like this. Very pleasant evening out.
