If you're on Facebook, they always post there first. I spoke with Danny last week and he said they plan to do more of them this year than in the past. The last one sold out really fast so it definitely helps to keep an eye out for their page.

after Da Beef had posted a photo of the Cuban sandwich served at Toons, I just had to try it.

It was a delicious sandwich. (by the way, the construction was much better than that of Da Beef's photo in the Cuban sandwich thread).

I went to Toons in Mid December 2013, the Cubano was still on the specials board and not on the menu. Bartender had mentioned that Toons was getting new menus printed and the Cubano sandwich will have a permanent home on the menu. Can anyone confirm?
I did absolutely nothing and it was everything I thought it could be.

I was there last week and Danny said it is definitely going on the menu--but they haven't done the reprints yet. It is delicious! And huge :) Half was more than enough for lunch and I was hungry!

Hey everyone, A quick update about a few questions here, The new menu's are done and the Cubano is on it for good! We have also added a few wing flavors full time, we now offer our regular Buffalo, Korean, Jamaican Jerk, BBQ, and a XXX-hot. We have been featuring a Scorpion pepper sauce from our friends at Jake Melnick's downtown as well. These wings are all on special every Monday during half price appetizer day as well as Thursday's which is Wing day. Now about Crawfish boils...The end of the season last year these things just got crazy busy and would sell out every time. We were always kind of trying to guess how many folks would show and how much to buy so it was kind of guess work. This year we started to advertise on our Facebook page and sell on Brown paper tickets..We sold 105 tickets in 20 minutes last week! It has helped take the guess work out of this,I feel like it is not as grass roots like when we started but oh well. The cold weather has made this season the worst crawfish season and most expensive in history as well. I would love to do a small boil on a weeknight if enough LTHer's were interested or maybe a Sunday afternoon? PM me here or we can set up an event on that page. Thanks for all the support!

If you read this post on LTHF, you may have wondered, "Why was he waiting for a northbound #9 Ashland bus?" :?:
Because that was the route (indicated by BustRacker) which would bring me closest to Toons. It was only one block south of Irving Park & Southport, instead of three blocks north of Addison.
The craft beer selection at Toons is still very solid (and is updated on Beermenus).
For food, despite having the double hot dog still in my stomach, I punted for its 'Surf & Turf'. Image Image The burger was quite good. The 'surf' component, ehhh, not so much. :( It was a bit dry. I didn't get a lot of fish flavor in any bite.
I am not a fan of wings. In my vista, wings are too much work for very little reward. But Toons will get another shot. Maybe I'll give the Cuban sandwich the chance.
I do need to remark for people who believe that Toons is not a sports bar. There are a lot of TVs @ Toons, and on this Friday night, nearly all of them were tuned to b**eball games. (It has the MLB Extra Innings package.) What I especially want you to know is that if you are a b**eball fan, Toons is one of only three venues in which I have ever been that goes the extra step with the out-of-market package. At the overwhelming majority of venues, when a game ends on one of the TV sets, you get to stare at the barker card telling you to watch for more games for scores of minutes before somebody finally realizes that game ended. At Toons, somebody has their eye on the ball (Eye. Ball. Eyeball. Did you catch that? I keep pitchin' 'em and you keep missin' 'em.), and will switch that TV set over to another game which is still in progress.
Toons certainly counts as a GNR in my vista. :)

Danny and Annie Beck, along with Johnny Van, have the art of the crawfish boil down to a science, a tasty tasty science at that! 630 pounds, and last Sunday was one of Toon's smaller boils, of perfectly cooked mud-bugs along with endless muffulettas and cold beer make for a perfect Spring afternoon. Check Toon's Facebook for upcoming crawfish boils.

Went to Toons for the first time ever last night (after seeing DePalma at The Music Box, which is great). Despite the place being full to bursting, we received enthusiastic, friendly, super service from our waitress whose name was April. And the ribs were terrific.

Man! It's been way too long since I was at Toons but the family and I remedied that today. Just stellar all the way around . . .

    Image
    Chicken Tortilla Soup
Made from scratch, as always. Delicious broth, big chunks of moist chicken and vegetables prepared so perfectly, they popped when I bit into them.

    Image
    Cubano
Righteous sandwich to be sure. You can see that the ham even gets grilled before the sandwich is assembled. And those tots . . . perfecto!

    Image
    Buffalo Wings
Still, always and forever, the best in Chicagoland.

Service was friendly as hell -- thanks, Tommy -- and the overall vibe could not be better. Damn me! I really need to keep Toons in the regular rotation.

Wandered into Toons quite be accident yesterday after the Cubs game.
My buddy and I ordered the Thursday special of 6 jumbo wings for $3.50 - I got buffalo and he got garlic parmesan and both were VERY good. I'll definitely remember to duck into Toons of future Cubs visits.

My one experience at Toons was a bad one.

I had gone there with a large group including some people who were friends of friends. We sat down at a table and one of these acquaintances came over to join us while drinking a bottle of beer he had clearly brought in from outside. The bartenders told him to get the hell out (rightfully so), but then threw our entire table out as well, even as we were getting ready to order drinks. Their justification was that we had "watched it happen and did nothing". A scathing indictment that I had previously only heard applied to Nazi-era Germany, and now also our table at Toons.

So yeah, I ain't coming back, no matter how good the crawfish is.

    Eating,

I've known Danny Beck, owner of Toon's, for a good long while. Count him as friend and one of the nicest fellows I know. While not discounting your annoyance you might want to give them another go.

Food wise, I'm a sucker for Toon's chili with lots of onions, pickled jalapeno and a bag of Cheetos crushed up for added crunch. Side of crisp tater tots and gulg of Co-Op hot sauce for balance (ballast :) ) Not to mention crawfish boils!!

I'd say for that alone you need to give Toons another chance. Clearly Danny cares about his customers. Don't know too many places in that neighborhood who would reach out like that. My only regret is that Danny wasn't in house on my one and only visit.
