For the eater it's just dessert but for the person whose name is on the door it's obviously a higher stakes situation.

We skim the menus and ask for the dessert menu before we order...
Nice to know it's not just me!

Why are these pies so godlike?
rehorn wrote:Hi -- Was looking for some help as I choose a pie flavor for a pie I'm ordering. Everyone in the group is open to a variety of flavors, so that's not an issue. I was thinking lemon chess or sour cream dutch apple, but I've not had either. Can anyone weigh in on either of these flavors? Thanks!!

Different strokes I suppose. The apple pie from Hoosier Mama served at the recent GNR dinner might have been the very best apple pie I've ever had - great crust, just tender enough apple chunks, just enough (and not too much) five-spice powder and the perfect thickness of the syrup.
That was the least successful host gift I ever gave.ronnie_suburban wrote:In fact, I've enjoyed every pie I've ever had from them with the exception of the Mince Meat, which I just did not care for. Other than that, it's hard to go wrong at Hoosier Mama. . . probably not even with apple in May.

Be on the lookout for blueberry - far and away my favorite pie at Hoosier Mama. Guessing blueberries won't be coming around until early July (she sources from Michigan, I think). There's also a very small window of blueberry/apricot pie, which is on the short list of the best things I've ever eaten.

Ditto. And if there's good pie to be found on Oahu, I have yet to discover it. Even the best renditions of local favorites like chocolate haupia pie or custard pie have had substandard to average at best crusts from what I've tasted so far.

...chocolate haupia pie...
