One small note. They weren't trying for Detroit style pizza. That was baseless speculation in the Tribune article.

pairs4life wrote:That has got to be one of the best winter salads I have had in a very long time. I don't recall any green but the ribboned vegetables were ridiculously good.
Your memory is correct. I overheard one of the Cellar Door guys saying they ran out of greens. For what it's worth, they were definitely the least important part of the salad.

100% agreed. Cellar Door wanted a party and they got/delivered a great one.

Thanks for the update. We drove by shortly before 5, saw the line and headed to Bonci.

I'm happy to hear it was a great experience. We had planned to get there a bit before 5, but we forgot about a previous appointment. Decided to try after our appointment anyway and got there about 6:15, saw the line down the sidewalk and kept on going.

I sadly couldn't make it (weeknight downtown? not for those of us in the burbs now with kids). I'm so glad it went well. They deserve it. I'll catch up with Lydia soon to see how they felt it went.

They look fine to me. Beautiful crumb in the crust. I mean, just gorgeous. Yeah, the top looks dark, but didn't Burt's pies look that way on the edges? I can see why they speculated Detroit-style. Looks kind of like that to me or pizza al taglio.

Was it not in the food hall that's downtown? Maybe I'm mistaken.

It was at Cellar Door Provisions, at Diversey & Whipple. Avondale/Logan = downtown to some folks who don't navigate the city much (not you given the mistake of fact).
Though with inbound 90/94 traffic, one can still enjoy that element of a trip downtown while exiting sooner for CDP.

Curiosity got the best of me. A Google search for Great Lake Pizza turned up an ad for Pizza Hut Express in the Great Lakes Naval Exchange. Guessing from the topic title that's not the place...or ironically enough, perhaps it is.

Let me tell you how special Great Lake Pizza was: I was at an LTH event testing olives/olive oil. When one of us called to learn what was on the menu, they were ready to hang up and discuss. I told them we have to order right this moment, because by the time you call back, the wait time will be over two hours. The person on the other side of phone acknowledged the truth of my statement.

One time they yelled at me about not closing the door completely and I actually platzed right there on the spot.

They let me use the Great Lakes bathroom while I was waiting in line. I felt both special and relieved.

I met the two of them at a party one time, we were chatting and getting along nicely. Lydia gave me her cell # and said I could call her direct for a pizza. I never did, but thought it was very nice of her.

I liked the pizza with the Butcher and Larder mortadella on it.

I never thought I would enjoy a mushroom pizza as much as I did their mushroom/taleggio one. Those mushrooms were sliced so thin that they still developed a nice roasted flavor even though the oven time was so short.

Thanks for the bump and the memories of the party we threw at Cellar Door. It was a lot of work to organize but really filled my heart to see faces new and old that night. Really appreciate Nick and Lydia for agreeing to that considering how much scrutiny it was bound to draw. I was pretty young during the Great Lake years but that food was transformative for me personally (especially the salad, I thought I hated creamy dressing) and they always let me use their bathroom.

I saw Lydia recently at my current place of employment and am happy to report that she and Nick are both doing well.

    This is exciting news.

I wonder if the plan is to make pizza like they did at the old shop (can't believe it's been 11 years), a version of Detroit style like they did at the pop-up at Cellar Door Provisions, or something different.

I also have to admit that I'm kind of looking forward to the many comments from customers mad they weren't coddled enough when eating there.

Personally, I look forward to complaining about everything. But no one should take it personally. It's my nature, after all. That said, I'm an old fashioned guy. Don't yell at me and do provide a bathroom, and I promise we'll be good to go. 8)

Hopefully the door doesn’t have to be manually closed. That really set people off a decade ago. They would have an aneurysm in 2024.
