According to the linked article, Aunt Jemima's opened in 1960. I don't know how long they were around, but I could swear Barnum and Bagel was open in that location by the mid to late 1970s.

In the late 1970s, Mr. Osher sold the Pickle Barrel restaurants. He and his son Michael then opened Barnum & Bagel, which they briefly considered calling "20th Century Lox."

    From that same linked article:
When Aunt Jemima's Kitchen closed its doors in 1968 or 1969, For a very short time a restaurant called The Bum Steer moved in. Next, the Gold Coin Restaurant opened, then the Barnum & Bagel Restaurant.

Never considered the connection before, and it may just be coincidence, but the Oscherwitz family of Best Kosher/Sinai 48 fame had a number of Oshers in it (shortened version of the family name). Couldn't see if Leo was part of that line.

There was a classic-style coffee shop/restaurant on the corner of Crawford and Church that I used to go to frequently in the 80s. It' gone now, but does anyone remember the name of that place?

Fine memories on both counts for entirely different reasons of course. (I also am unable to recall either of the names.) Great catch - thanks!

That Chinese place was Lim's Chop Suey, I believe. We used to live on Cleveland between Karlov and Kedvale, and went there a lot. It was take out only.

This one is so obscure that even I only remember bits & pieces...

About 1969, on the north side of Oakton St. between Karlov & Crawford, a Kroger was constructed, with an attached SuperX drug store. Recessed back in there to the west was a little strip of stores with a laundromat, a tiny (maybe Greek) coffee shop and maybe something else.

But even then, at 12-13 years old, I dug the vibe of walking to school, leaving the house at 7:15 to have some time, on the way stopping at this little place by myself, sitting at the bar next to the grill and ordering a chocolate donut and a glass of milk. I'd watch the short-order cook make eggs & hashbrowns, hear him talk to the waitresses, see the other customers kibbitzing to each other, thinking all the time how interesting the restaurant business must be. Then I'd finish, pay my 35 or 40 cents, leave a dime tip, and walk to Oakview Jr. High a block away. Nothing earth-shattering, but it was for 7th & 8th grade a part of my routine at least a couple times a week.

So...does anybody remember this joint and what was its name?

Similarly, every once in a great while, a couple like-minded buddies and I would get on our bikes and ride down Oakton to Skokie Blvd, then a little bit north to a true trucker's diner, Karl's Cafe. This was adult, meat-and-potatoes stuff like ham hocks & beans, Hungarian goulash. It even seemed a little rough in there, with clouds of cigarette smoke. And (I hope someone can check on this for me) I seem to remember that Karl's--for some unholy reason--got a mention in Yippie Abbie Hoffman's tome 'Steal This Book'.

    I dug that place too!

i think they are following the compassionate-rule-of-breakfast-dining-out: morning servers work as hard as those at lunch or dinner, but make so much less in tips if diners just tip 15-20%. i always tip $5 on a small order, even if i'm not one of those customers who needs their coffee cup refilled 3 times...

On the flip side of that, my niece worked at a place (not all that long ago, just a few years pre-COVID) that had a 25-cent special on wings one night a week. The local high school kids would stop in and order 10 wings and then leave a 50-cent tip.

Oh man, that was a simply wonderful place in the early 1980's. They had a $6.95 Boston Scrod special that came with a tremendous little salad with tiny shrimp and chopped egg.

    Thanks for reminding me!

We were also discussing LaRosa's, another great pizza. Besides their Dempster location they had one on Golf Road. Does anyone recall if they had a LaRosa on Church by Crawford? Thanks

Village Inn opened in 1990. I'm not sure exactly when Zhivago or Cheesecake Factory opened, but I think they are of similar vintage.

Shouldn't The Studio be on that list, or was it just over the border in Morton Grove?

The list by DrGale that has been posted here has long been superseded with a more comprehensive and accurate accounting.

The Studio was at 8717 Lincoln Ave.; well inside the borders of Morton Grove, near St. Paul Woods, just north and east of where Burt's Place and Pequods are still located.

Seems like Ubaa & Old Crawford Inn should be on the list. I believe they claimed to be the oldest bar and restaurant in Skokie until they closed. I remember enjoying their burgers.

Cheesecake Factory wasn’t around in the 70s. Village Inn was Alberti’s in the 70s.

Correct, if you're referring to the location in Skokie. The first Cheesecake Factory location was in Beverly Hills and opened in 1978. As I mentioned above, I was guessing that the Old Orchard location opened around 1990, but I could be off by as much as five years in either direction.
