I tried The Quonset Pizza Restaurant in Waukegan last night. I've been actively looking out for pizza joints that have been around since the 50's, and this one has been there since 1946. When we walked in, the smell was a little reminiscent of Marie's on Lawrence which got me excited. The restaurant had three sections, all connected lengthwise. To the right was the carryout section (with freezer case ala Frank's Pizza Palace in Appleton, WI). The middle section had a curved ceiling like an armory and had a large bar and lots of booths. The left section was much quieter and was all tables and booths. My friend ordered a half pepperoni half sausage. I just had a half sausage half cheese. The pizza was a classic thin crust, tavern style pizza (which I was hoping for), but it was not crisp. There was a bit too much cheese, giving it a rubbery feel. The sausage was marble sized balls, and nothing special. My friend said the pepperoni wasn't that good, reminding him of summer sausage. Overall we felt it was a fair pizza, nothing more. This was somewhat of a letdown as I heard some good things about it and was hoping to find another classic old time pizza joint that some of us have been talking about lately. Listening to some of the locals talking about it, you get the impression that they don't get out of Waukegan much!

the one time i've been there, i thought the pizza was fairly average; our crust was rather crisp though. it struck me as a place i would have loved as a high school/college student, when my world was smaller.

I had no recollection of this place yet passing by it yesterday on our way to the Genesee Theater, Mrs Willie exclaimed "Hey isn't The Quonset supposed to have great pizza?" Clearly a name she remembers.

We didn't stop in as it looked closed.
I did absolutely nothing and it was everything I thought it could be.

Quonset was fair at best. I wouldn't return. I'd try Kaiser's pizza on Route 21 just south of 41. The bar I go to in Lake Bluff serves their pizza and it's pretty good. I've yet gone to the mothership.

My quest for a Barnaby's alternative took me to Wells Brothers in Racine, WI a couple weeks ago, which i found tremendous and a must-stop.

Next up was Quonset Pizza in Waukegan, which was recommended to me by a Racine-area native who assured me it was better than the old school tavern style thin crust at Wells.

Right off a busy street, Quonset is a warm, homey place with a lot of locals and charm. Off to the side was some kind of gambling nook. Basically its booths and a big bar.

The pizza was big, crisp, and delicious. The pepperoni was buried underneat the cheese (next time i will order easy cheese). Nothing fancy but very well made. Did not feel better than Wells. Will go back. Would like some more reviews of this one!

Quonset is the favorite among my kid's friends and the Warren High crowd in general, beating Kaiser's and Fatman's along with all the Gurnee chains, both local (Jimano's, Rosati's etc) and major. The only real drawback is that it's in Waukegan, a longer jaunt for Gurnee residents.
