RHR dog quality is inconsistent, so this makes sense.

upon these strong recommendations I had to stop in for the cod sandwich. it is extraordinarily crunchy! wonderful! but in line with complaints about the tartar, i felt strongly that the sandwich needed a pickle component.
nonetheless, that is a mighty tasty $6.11.

This has not been my experience at the RHR Ashland. My typical visit times are around 11am or 10pm. I order a double dog w/mustard, onion, light relish and sport pepper, eat one dog out of hand to savor the flavor and snap and the other in the bun with condiments.

    Obviously YMMV

I want a side of tartar for their fries. Usually I get a side of the burger sauce but this has real potential.

I stopped in today for another RHR fish sandwich. It must be a work in progress because the tartar sauce tasted much better than last time but what do I know, I just eat for a living. The only way to really know is to have the Gold Standard Bearer of taste Ronnie Suburban give it a try.

Tried the highly touted, much debated RHR Fish Sandwich tonight. A solid sandwich for the most part. Decent piece of fish, nicely fried and poking out from both sides of the bun. No problems with the tartar sauce. Wish I'd skipped the lettuce; totally unnecessary. Only criticism, it tasted a bit salty.

To put that in perspective, I do most of the cooking in our home. My wife's only complaint is that I tend to over salt as I cook. She says I've become inured to salt and don't realize how much I'm using. So for me to say it was too salty, you know it was TOO salty.

All in all though a very tasty sandwich.

As recommended by the "Gold Standard Bearer of taste" that's exactly what I did, asked a pickle component be added along with my standard request of sport peppers. Thinking the overabundance of tarter sauce on my first RHR Ashland Alaskan Cod Sandwich an anomaly pickles and sport peppers were my only request.

More "tarter" in the tarter sauce this time around but still too much sauce, if there's a next time I will specify light tarter sauce. Hot dog and crisp fries terrific, I plan on going back to my standard RHR Ashland order of double dog, burger, fries crispy.

I've been getting the cod sandwich about twice a week since I found out about it. I would agree it seems overly sauced each time, it's a multiple napkin sandwich. Size is generally consistent though one time I did have a comically oversized piece of fish, it reminded me of some of the pork tenderloin sandwiches I've had in Iowa where the meat is 3x as big as the bun. I'm going to try adding pickles next time, sounds like a good addition. A worthy addition to the limited RHR menu IMO.

Stopped by RHR on Western a week or so ago, had the double RHR cheeseburger and a dog w/ fries. Dog not pictured.

    Image

    Image

Dog was a bit old and tired, didn't have as much snap and flavor as I liked, I should have asked them to drop some fresh dogs for me. But don't they take a good 10-15 minutes to heat up in the water? Maybe throwing one on the grill would have been better.

Burger was fine, had a burnt piece on the edge that I ate that gave an unpleasant aftertaste but rest of it was ok, wish it had a little more sauce, couldn’t really taste it.
Fries I asked for well-done and that was a bit of a mistake, my wife thought they were over-cooked, I thought they were fine except for the 10-12 that had black spots on them. I think that’s too much sugar causing those black spots? Ate a couple of those black ones and that contributed to the bad aftertaste. Overall the meal was cheap (little over $10), had plenty of fries leftover even after tossing the black ones (gave the leftovers to the pupper) but wasn’t that impressed.

Later on that week found myself near the Ashland ave location and stopped in for a double cheese, no dog this time. Asked for pickles on my burger, they gave me a healthy amount (7-8 slices) but I forgot the extra sauce. Burger overall came with more lettuce than the one from Western, and didn’t have any burnt edges. That plus the pickles made for a much better taste then the one previously, with all the toppings the burger was very juicy. Still wish I could have tasted the sauce more, the flavor of beef and cheese tended to overwhelm the other aspects of the burger which, I know, is not really a bad thing.

    Image
    Image

Fries were much better too, didn’t ask for them well-done, and nary a black spot to be seen.
As a bonus I asked for a side of the burger sauce and they gave me a small cup for free (normally 75cents), it seems like a vinegary mayo with some ketchup, black pepper, maybe some thousand island (had some chunks in there)? Had a strong taste, but I guess not as strong as ketchup or mustard would be, since I couldn’t really taste it on the burger.
Overall, I enjoyed the food, especially the second visit. I’ve only had In n Out once, a decade ago in California; I don’t remember too much except thinking the vegetables were very fresh for a fast food joint and that it was overhyped. Better than McDonald’s, sure, mostly because everything seems fresher, but not excellent.
If this is as good or better than I&O than I’m very glad to have RHR in Chicago.

RHR Western becomes less of a destination when it's too cold to sit outside, but the stomach wants what it wants so I headed up there today. Double dog and fries, just perfect. Crispy fries, snappy dog, all for $5.

I was mildly critical of RHR for what I was calling a "lack of vision or perspective" basically replicating dishes from other restos, but I have very much changed my tune. The fact that I can get a burger that good, at the price point, and I can walk to the western location makes it my favorite stand in town. It also helps that it's my 4 year olds favorite. The clown cant compete with RHR sauce :)
