These are our favorite local places:

India House in Buffalo Grove which has always had a nice variety of fresh tasting dishes and good service.

Lone Tree Inn on Milwaukee Ave. in Niles for Polish which always has great potato pancakes, blintzes and, unil recently, great oxtail stew.

For Thai, the lunch buffet at Siam's House also on Milwaukee Ave. in Niles where the Basil Chicken makes my nose run most of the time. We have been going to Siam's House since the late '90s and they have never changed the items on their buffet which is OK since we really like everything on it. The only drawback to Siam's House is that they are often very slow to refill the buffet.

In spite of my snarky first post in this thread, I must admit that I truly like the buffet at India House in BG.
We have also been to the Schaumburg Shaw's the last two Thanksgivings and have found the food and service to be terrific and well worth the $ 45 per person charge. To those interested, its basically their Sunday brunch on steroids--- all of the usual dishes plus turkey ( + trimmings ) and beef tenderloin.

    Buddy,

Thanks, for the heads up. As much as it may be true -- and we don't necessarily doubt that it is -- the responses have been thoughtful and contain information that will probably be of use to many LTHers, so we're going to leave it alone. There's no direct marketing or spamming taking place on the thread or in the original post. Should that change, we'll make an adjustment.

In the future, if you have a similar, administrative concern, please use the report feature (red exclamation point at the bottom right of each post).

I do not like buffets. I would rather order off a menu. That said, I had the brunch buffet at the clubhouse in Oakbrook that was good. I occasionally frequent the chinese and indian buffets for a quick lunch as well as the buffet at whole foods. I would like to try red apple and jolly in at some point.

There were a dozen food islands offering everything from the standards to sushi, stir fry and hibachi grilled items. The food was fresh and constantly being replenished. There were people constantly cleaning the serving areas and the tables. Best part: Kids don't eat for free. Any other (of the few) Chinese buffets that I have tried pale in comparison.

I had a similar experience to yours at a location in Matteson,Il. This is some sort of franchise or chain but I can't find a national website. The food on the buffet tables was unremarkable at best but I was quite pleased with the stir fry & hibachi.

Red Apple has two locations, both on Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago. Neither one is in Niles. You probably mean the one just north of Devon in Norwood Park, which is closer to Niles than the one just south of Belmont near Logan Square.

HMMM Favorite Buffets??? Reza Persian restaurant Andersonville (I think only Early Sundays) , Gandhi India West Rogers Park , Standard India Restaurant Boys Town, Fogo de Chao downtown. As for Old Country B or Golden Corral those places are cool too but its kinda like I wouldn't say Mcdonalds is my favorite "restaurant" even tho I really like eating there. Oh and since a few places you guys mentioned weren't in Chicago I m going to mention Shephards Clearwater FL , I go straight for the crab legs I think thats what everyone goes for. You see people stack their plate 3ft high with crab legs even tho you can go unlimited times

Well okay, it's one block south of the southernmost Niles border. But I love it so much that I claim it as ours.

I just assumed the OP meant places that were strictly or almost strictly buffet. If we can add places that have buffets just at brunch, I may have to add Seasons in Long Grove and Millrose Inn in Barrington, although it's been a long time since I went to that one.

The only buffet I've been to in the last several years has been brunch at the Ritz-Carlton this New Year's Day. We enjoyed it. I can't say that it's "worth" the money in terms of the amount of food one can possibly eat, but the food was all good, much of it was interesting, and we felt the whole, nice, leisurely experience was worth the money. And hey, the price includes one free drink! :)

Sunday brunch at Shaw's Crab House, both locations (Chicago and Schaumburg), as I already mentioned in the first page of this topic. They have 'em hot or cold, cut into bite sizes, and we're talking the big Alaskan king crab legs, not those skimpy snow crab legs.

Yes, I'm serious. That's what they had when I was there this past winter. I don't know if they've made any changes, since the price of king crab legs has more than doubled since then. I'm going there (Shaw's Schaumburg) again this Sunday, so I can let you know afterwards if they still have them, or if they've made any changes.

If the Non-stop meat action doesn't count, the salad bar has to count as a buffet ! I haven't been there in years but the last time I was there it was massive. It had seasoned asparagus the size of baseball bats , Huge Shitake mushrooms in some kind of brine, Prosciutto , everything. I swear , just going there for the salad bar was pretty awesome !

I suspect the main attraction of a buffet is the "all you can eat" aspect, rather than the "serve yourself" aspect. Churrascaria offers "all you can eat", so if that's what you're looking for, it counts. Same thing for Chinese restaurants offering unlimited dim sum at a fixed price.

Not a buffet but Glenn's Diner on Montrose has all-you-can-eat Alaskan King Crab legs on Tuesday--it's "market" price so probably worth a call first since Glenn's can be a bit pricy, although the food I've had has always been very good and fresh.

The one north of Devon is the better location overall, imo. Cleaner, more comfortable, and the food seems tastier somehow. Also, the dessert selection is better, with cakes and cookies you'd actually want to eat instead of dry, over-sweet slabs of raisiny crap and bowls of Jello smothered with pudding and grapes.
