I plan to get there to try this as soon as possible, it looks amazing.

They had a classic breaded halibut on a roll every Friday and eventually the fish prices went up so they went to a breaded cod sandwich and then had a variation with melted Swiss cheese and cole slaw on top. Nature's perfect sandwich. I've had the grouper version in South Carolina and coastal Florida, also great.

How could one make this at home?? Being a pescatarian, I miss Reuben sandwiches from being a youth.
Thank you.
Cheers.

Pretty simple: breaded fish, griddled marbled rye, Swiss and cole slaw. And, duh, Russian dressing. Mind is a bit cloudy before 5AM.

So I finally made it out to a place I’ve been hearing about for a long time: Al and Joe’s out by O’Hare ... Al and Joe’s lives up to its reputation.

2) Manny's Coffee Shop, South Loop--fresh-cut roast beef off the haunch on a Kaiser roll. Depending on my mood, I'd have Gino cut either rare from one side or caramelized, crispy, well-done, pot roast-like beef off the other end. Both were fantastic, either with mayo or mustard. With a stellar latke...and a pickle!

You could be right that the big mondo haunch does not exist anymore. I ate lunch virtually every weekday between 2000-2010 at Manny's due to them being our landlord--what proximity! So, it's reasonable to assume that I haven't seen once since then. What a shame. I hope Gino's OK--he & I got to be good working buds.
Yes I think I would. Thank you for the heads up. Of course it has to be only one day a week and up in Wisconsin!Puckjam wrote:If you like that type of sammy, there is a place in Pewaukee called The Station. On Wednesday's they have smoked turkey sammy with a smoky turkey au jus. You would probably like that.
