I plan to get there to try this as soon as possible, it looks amazing.

We had 2 pambazos at El Habanero last night -- 1 al pastor and 1 asada "special" in which they include a touch of chorizo. Wow! It was tough choosing a favorite. What a great place, and run by such warm, accommodating hosts.

So I finally made it out to a place I’ve been hearing about for a long time: Al and Joe’s out by O’Hare. I’m of the opinion that most Italian subs in the city that you get from a deli are more similar than they are different but Al and Joe’s seems a cut above the rest, mostly because of the excellent dressing mix they use. Seems heavier on the vinegar maybe? I really like the tang it give the whole sandwich and the meats are very flavorful and well-proportioned as well – heavy on the mortadella which I like a lot.

I wouldn’t say this is the best Chicago sandwich (still Al’s Beef dipped, hot), or even my favorite Italian sub (that would be Vinnie’s on Grand) but Al and Joe’s lives up to its reputation.

This probably does not belong here, but there are (surprisingly) no baloney sandwich threads. It was a tasty sandwich!

They had a classic breaded halibut on a roll every Friday and eventually the fish prices went up so they went to a breaded cod sandwich and then had a variation with melted Swiss cheese and cole slaw on top. Nature's perfect sandwich. I've had the grouper version in South Carolina and coastal Florida, also great.

How could one make this at home?? Being a pescatarian, I miss Reuben sandwiches from being a youth.
    Thank you.

Pretty simple: breaded fish, griddled marbled rye, Swiss and cole slaw. And, duh, Russian dressing. Mind is a bit cloudy before 5AM.

There is a great place in Isle of Capri, Florida: Pelican Bend, that serves a Grueben. Blackened grouper with kraut, housemade russian dressing or thousand island or tartar swiss cheese on marble rye. My lovely bride likes it with house made tartar. Have also had it with mahi, hogfish, and roughy; all of which are native to the southern gulf. Simple to make at home if you can get fresh grouper!! We have made it with mahi at home. Blackening seasoning on fish, 3-5 minutes per side in air fryer. When it's done add kraut, cheese, dressing and gridle rye until toasty!!

I wondered about kraut overwhelming the fish. Sounds like there are 2 thoughts on cabbage on a fish reuben: slaw or kraut. Kraut's easier but slaw makes a nice side for fish so could be worth whipping up a batch.

The acidic kraut works well to offset the fatty pastrami of the traditional Reuben but when it comes to fish, the slaw balances better.

Can't remember if I've ever chimed in on this one, but nevertheless...

Ironically, the two sandwiches tied at the top are two sandwiches I should not eat anymore, for health reasons. Maybe a quarter sometime!

    1) Al's Beef, Taylor St.--large combo dipped, wet, hot, sweet. Usually have to eat it on a plate with fork & knife, fuggetabout the 'Italian Stance'--the bread turns into dumplings. But the total taste palette is incredible.

    2) Manny's Coffee Shop, South Loop--fresh-cut roast beef off the haunch on a Kaiser roll. Depending on my mood, I'd have Gino cut either rare from one side or caramelized, crispy, well-done, pot roast-like beef off the other end. Both were fantastic, either with mayo or mustard. With a stellar latke...and a pickle!

Does this still exist? I remember someone once saying that on Friday's Manny's still did the big roast, the haunch, steamboat, the joint, I'm not sure the technical term. It's been years since I've seen "the old style" roast beef at Manny's--also seeing Gino. But I'd prefer to be wrong on this.

These days I tend to split my Manny's orders between corned beef and brisket. I find the brisket, with Manny's horseradish and spicy mustard, on the onion roll, almost, achieves the sensation of the old carved roast beef.

You could be right that the big mondo haunch does not exist anymore. I ate lunch virtually every weekday between 2000-2010 at Manny's due to them being our landlord--what proximity! So, it's reasonable to assume that I haven't seen once since then. What a shame. I hope Gino's OK--he & I got to be good working buds.

One favorite that I keep coming back to is The Schwartzy at Eleven City Diner. Thinly sliced house smoked brisket on a brioche bun with smoky au jus to dip. The smoky au jus puts it over the top for me.
