    I stopped by for a small tip lunch (small! It is to laugh:)) The tips were sublime as usual, this time I sat in the truck and ate them on the spot, the fries do NOT travel well let me tell you. I recommend eating them first before they get soggy.

    Anyhow, in the course of talking to Robert's son (isn't he?), he mentioned that they have been getting little support from the local community and were considering moving to "Bucktown or someplace like that" with some seating as a very strong possibility. This might just be wishful thinking but I know a couple dozen people who I personally could get addicted to Honey 1 were it in a more accessible location with seating.

    I always feel bad to see these great small places struggling while McDonalds and its' FoodCorp cronies have to beat the customers back with sticks.

    Well, I just put my 5 slab order in for this eve in order to make sure their venture is fruitful (and smokey)!

    Hmmmm....I know of two great locations. They should scope out:

    1) Where the Howard Brown Clinic retail store ("The Brown Elephant")used to be, on Ashland south of Irving Park Road. It even has a parking lot (!), and there hasn't been any edible barbamaque in that part of town since Larry Tucker closed up shop at NN Smokehouse.

    2) Where Meier's Bakery used to be on Main St. in Evanston, just west of Chicago Avenue (parking lot just across the street). They could clean up there in a BIG way, I bet. No decent barbamaque in all of SE Evanston, Skokie, Rogers Park....the only true competition would be Hecky's, of course, but they are all the way on the other side of Evanston. Merle's doesn't count, IMO. We're dyin' up here!

    PS Tangentially Related Matter: I had the pleasure of drinking coffee and yakking with Larry Tucker, of NN Smokehouse fame - I was doing some work around the corner from LT's Grill, and was delighted to find that Larry opens up shop at 8:00 AM, so I had multiple days to drop in and start the day off right. Here's the deal with the hours: Breakfast & lunch only, and brunch only on the weekends; one can rent the place out in the evening for private functions. He just remarried in February, an all is well - he is a really fun guy. So stop in and chow down....but do be advised that the only barbamaque on the menu is a pulled pork sandwich.

    When I picked up my ribs on friday, I was told they would be moving to Bucktown area in a month and a half or so.
    The ribs, BTW, were excellent once again. Also ordered a XL tips/links combo as a sampler and while the tips were up to their usual snuff, I am not a big fan of their links. While they do have a nice kick, I find the texture too be a bit too mushy, without much snap.

    Hi,

    I talked to Robert's son on the phone this evening. They will be moved by July. They're considering two different locations. So they'll be on the move in about 6 weeks.

    They will be keeping their phone number so tracking them will be a snap.

    Has anyone been able to get through to Honey 1 in the past week or two? The past two Sundays the phone has just rang and rang...it is quite distressing, what with friends in town and all.

    They close at 6pm on Sundays. Not sure what the story is.

    Honey 1 is now closed on Sundays, that's why no one picks up the phone. The move is scheduled to take place in about 3 weeks. Apparently he has a new place, but didn't want to divulge the location. We got 2 slabs yesterday, they were great even after the ride back to the south side.

    How does the sauce of Honey 1 compare to Hecky's in Evanston? Do they sell sauce separately in a jar you can take home?

    James Ward reported on ABC this week that Honey 1 will be moving to Bucktown in July. This report is included on the website www.abc7chicago.com with the title "A Trio of Best Barbeques".

    Honey 1 will be relocating to the 2200 block of N Western Avenue, on the west side of the street, I think. The last day at the 5135 address will be July 5, there is no set date for opening the new place, Robert Jr. guessed that it would be between the 15th and the 20th. All of this info comes from a conversation with Robert Jr., and as someone (Cathy2?) noted, the phone # will stay the same, so it won't be hard to find out when the new place is open. The new smoker is already installed at the new place, I can't wait until the best commercial ribs the North side has to offer are that much closer to my friends' houses.

    EDIT: polster, Honey 1 does not sell their sauce in jars. I have never had Hecky's, so I am not in a position to compare, but I do like Honey 1's sauce better than Barbara Ann's or Lem's, if that is any help.

    I think they're going to be opening at 2227 N Western, at the southeast corner of Western and Lyndale.

    If this is the case, they aren't open and I haven't seen any activity in that building for a few weeks now.

    when I google "honey one bbq" I get a listing for 1804 N. Mason Ave, Chicago, 60639, with the same phone number.

    ..but you folks have more reliable information, having spoken to Robert, and whatnot...

    Huh, that's definitely not bucktown. That's about 2 miles from the old location.

    Anyone tried calling?

    I just did, and the voicemail message says: 2241 N Western, opening sometime in late july, but no specific date.

    That puts them just north of Think Cafe (and so not where I thought they were moving). Maybe I'll do a drive-by this evening and see if I can detect any activity.

    Yes, just north of Think. IIRC, the bldg. facade is white tile with green tile trim.

    You will see some appliances scattered about. They certainly wouldn't appear to be opening within the next few days.

    I just spoke to Robert Jr. and they are looking at 2nd week in August. Honey 1 is going to be really nice, 15-tables, couple of TV's, maybe even waitress service. But, and this it the important part, a new 8-foot Chicago Style Aquarium Smoker!!

    Tables and TV are nice, but the Chicago style Aquarium is where Robert Sr. works his magic. Going to be great, I hope to be one of the first in line when they open their doors.

    Sounds fantastic to me, but do you think he'll be comfortable with the new smoker, air flow, and space that early? I always assume new bbq shacks take about 6 months to really hit their stride. Of course, I bet even sub-par honey one will be wonderful. I will, of course, be there.

    Possible, but, if so, the time period will be very (very) brief as Honey 1's new pit is exactly the same as the old except it's larger.

    Robert Sr's take on BBQ is more art than science, and he has such depth and breadth of experience, he should easily acclimate to subtle changes in draft, fire control etc.
