The old Hackney's location in Wheeling on Milwaukee has a brand new red roof, new windows out front, and finally a name: D'Agostino's. They're hiring, no sign of when or whether they're open, but the big screen TV's were horrible through the aforementioned windows, so maybe they're open already.

It's all Dat and more: Dat Donuts owner opening Bar-B-Q joint. Dat Donuts owner Darryl Townson is returning to his roots (or, shall we say, the pit) where he started in food: barbecue. As a high school student, Mr. Townson worked for Leon Finney Sr., the man behind Chatham's legendary Leon's BBQ, and eventually entered the doughnut business with him.
Dat Bar-B-Q is scheduled to open Oct. 15 in the old Leon's BBQ location at 8247-51 S. Cottage Grove Ave., now revamped with a new façade and new equipment.

The latest newsletter from the village of Mundelein says that a Super WalMart will be built in the shopping area on Route 60 (Townline Rd) where Hobby Lobby and Menard's are now (Menard's will be moving out to 60/83) and that Pita Inn has bought and will be moving into the abandoned Krispy Kreme building at the same location.

The largest local Indian food store (United Grocers) recently moved into that shopping area, and presumably they will be moving too (the village newsletter says that only Hobby Lobby and some outlot businesses will stay), but no word yet on where the Indian grocery will go.

Looking forward to a Pita Inn nearby, even though there are already two kabob places on the same street that so far haven't inspired me to visit. A set of visits for comparison would be interesting once Pita Inn Mundelein ( ) is up and running.

I will always look back longingly at that one brief shining moment when we had Krispy Kremes down the street.

I don't know when it happened, but the Burger King on Milwaukee in Prospect Heights (just north of the split with River Road) is gone: signage all removed. It's not a destination spot for me, but it has been the source of a croissanwich or two in the past.

We already knew that the new Belden Deli was closed temporarily following a death in the family, now it's closed for good. At least according to the email I just received from Groupon about getting a refund on the $10 for $20 deal I bought a couple months ago... it's really too bad, because I liked having a deli better than the Bagel in the neighborhood.

Cuzzin's, which recently changed its name to Cugino's, in Des Plaines has closed. Big hand-drawn sign in the window that says "AVAILABLE".

The food wasn't bad when we went there. I think renaming it Cugino's to indicate it was Italian food wasn't a terrible idea, but the signage they chose was awful. Big, generic block letters.

That's interesting b/c someone I know drove by the shuttered Dominick's on Rt 60 in Vernon Hills and said there was a sign posted saying that Hobby Lobby will be moving into it.

But glad to hear about Pita Inn!

The village newsletter says, "When Menards leaves, everything but the Hobby Lobby building and out-lots will be torn down to make way for the Walmart store." So I guess something else is moving into that building. If Hobby Lobby is going to move into the old Dominicks building on Route 60, I'm not surprised that the Mundelein newsletter didn't mention it, because that's in Vernon Hills.

Interesting-looking new place in West Rogers Park - a kosher sushi bar. Corner of California (Dodge in Evanston) and Howard St., on the former site of the long-gone and much-missed Oriental Food Market & Cooking School; note the interesting weekend hours, which conform to Rabbinical statutes, a wise decision in this heavily Jewish Orthodox neighborhood:

That's a Burger and Oberweis on Skokie Blvd. & Dempster looks almost ready to open.

It looks like Imperial Bakery will be opening not long from now in the old Kaufmann's space, also on Dempster. The neon signs are up but the fence is still there.

The River North location of Orange (738 N. Clark) has closed, and an 'artisan sandwich' cafe is supposedly opening soon.

With Miele and Yolk within walking distance of that spot, and the River West Orange on Milwaukee and Grand, it's no great loss. I thought it was a bad sign they dropped their French toast fruit kabob from the menu :(
