If we weren’t on our way out the door, I’m sure that would have happened on the spot.

So I've never been to Homestyle, but since it's more Northern style and based on both your descriptions, I'm guessing what you saw was some type of bao.

Looking at their online menu, my guess is the Homemade Steam Soup Bun (xiaolong tangbao) in their dimsum section. Since it's a type of bao, i'm guessing the skin is a type of mantou, so it's likely thicker and fluffier than the xiaolongbao most of us have eaten.

Could also be the Homestyle Steamed Pork Bun cause the manty I saw from Bamyan are very similar to Northern Chinese style steamed buns.

Next time someone is there, maybe get an order and report back. I'm sure it'll be good regardless.

Thanks. Will definitely try asking about/ordering that next time.

Courtesty of my girlfriend...she says there is something on their menu which translates to "Shenyang Big Baozi" which is most likely what you're seeing. The english on their menu is "Homestyle Steamed Pork Bun."

I've had the dumplings at Homestyle Taste (not too bad) - when it says "dumpling" on the menu, it's referring to jiaozi, which are smaller and more ovalish (like what you'd get QXYD). These can be northern style. If it mentions "Bun" then it's larger baozi (aka bao). I'd go for the "Homestyle Steamed Pork Bun" next time you're there if interested. The only other bao on the menu really is xiaolongbao, which is a more Shanghai/Wuxi thing while "Homestyled Steamed Pork Bun" on their menu is a northern style baozi.

My daughter sent me a text message last night asking if Homestyle Taste had closed. I did a quick search and found an indication that it had. I also called the restaurant last night and there was no answer. A follow up call this morning was answered. The person that answered the call said that the restaurant was currently closed and had "new owners, new everything".

I was planning on going tomorrow night.

Worst news ever. Homestyle Taste can only get worse from a change. Fingers crossed they retain the same chefs and menu.

Yes, it is definitely closed, saw the signs myself today. The owners are the chefs, too, and word is that they've sold or handed it over to a Hunan restaurant. Homestyle is gone, and we are sad. I have missed Hunan style food since the demise of Lao Hunan, but whatever comes next will not fill the hole of Homestyle.

^ Apparently the Chinese for this restaurant is more like "People From Your Hometown"

It sucks Homestyle Taste is gone. Hopefully this new restaurant is very good too even though it's a different style of food than Homestyle Taste.
