My wife and I dined at the Loyalist on Saturday 12/30/17. Arrived at 4 pm, and had a couple of cocktails while we waited for the kitchen to open at 5pm.

Overall, we were quite impressed with the food and drinks. We thought the value was good too. Around $130 for this meal before tip. That included a few other non-pictured cocktails/cider/beer. The highest point of the meal was the duck leg. Just exquisite. Burrata and the dessert were also very good. The weakest link in our progression was the much heralded burger. Thought that the meat was outshined by all of the onions and condiments. However, the fries and fried garlic aioli were excellent. The biscuit was also a mild disappointment, while very flaky, it was on the dry side and lacked in butteryness. So it ended up really just a vessel for the N'duja rather than a compliment.

Cocktails were well crafted. A decent list of bottles/cans for beer. Although, I'm always wary of the freshness of IPA bottles/cans at restaurants. Ended up having a Hopewell First Lager during the meal and it was canned in July. Now it's a lager that isn't quite as dependent on hops as some of the other IPA on the menu so it wasn't bad but if I had ordered one of the IPA's and it was from July I would have sent it back. Fernet Branca and Sparrow coffee to finish with dessert were nice.

I kind of appreciate the Sheilds' swagger to have two of a mere five entrees be MP cuts of beef.

I can see why there is not a separate thread for The Loyalist, and it would be combined with Smyth. But I was a bit surprised to do a word search in this thread and not find a single instance of "burger". That seems odd for a place that has been open for ~8 years and was named one of the best burgers in America, and always makes the Top 5 list in Chicago these days.

Anyway, I went back there at 5pm yesterday, on the way home, for an early dinner at the bar. The burger and fries were as good as ever, and went down nicely with a West Coast IPA. With the usual tip, the total bill came to $51. First time in my life that a quick burger, fries, and beer went over fitty. It was probably a year ago since I was last there, and it was low-mod 30's if I recall correctly.

As much as I enjoyed it, can't see me going back for just a burger at the bar; maybe a longer sitdown dinner with the full menu. For low 30's, I've got the excellent Leavitt St Tavern in my hood, as well as the RHR $9 option (no beer) a short walk away as well.

Also, maybe a request to change this thread title to Smyth and The Loyalist?

I've merged your post into an already existing thread for Loyalist.

Thanks. Yes, a search snafu is the more logical explanation than no one posting about the Loyalist in 8 years.
