Almost forgot a quick burger I grabbed during the week...

    AC2C9478-49E0-42F5-9503-26C8B50FEA4E.jpeg Sir Loin Cheeseburger

    Dam Inn
    1000 S Milwaukee Ave, Wheeling

I have always enjoyed this burger. Big, seasoned patty, cooked fresh to order with plenty of cheese and fresh toppings and toasted French bread. Mayonnaise added which isn't a Chicago thing but goes well. Thin fries well cooked.

A dive bar with family connections. My father designed and had the building built. Currently owned buy the daughter of my father's sister's brother. Shirttail to be sure. We do stay in touch so it was good to see Mel (Melanie).

Enjoy the adult novelties and Halloween decorations while you wait. :)

Not a destination nor a spot to stop at for a football game (closed Sundays). I don't think there are any craft beers nor cocktails.

Just a burger and a bottle of Bud. :)

Isn't your father's sister's brother actually your father or your uncle?

Your description puts me in mind of this old tune:

    Another great area meal yesterday.

    Siunik Armenian Grill
    1707 Chestnut Ave, Glenview

    D8E6A4C2-E381-441B-89D7-6B1D7B13C0D6.jpeg A Feast!

The main dish, Lula Kabob (ground beef) (there were 3 pieces :) ), mushroom pilaf (made with cracked wheat), cabbage salad, tabuleh with Lebanese pita.

Kabob was aggressively spiced (very similar to ćevapi) and nice and juicy. Lightly browned.

I later found out they had a traditional red hot sauce that I could of applied but I didn’t see until after.

I knew that I wouldn’t finish all so to taste and take home was a large Lentil Soup and Hummus.

I already mentioned the kabob, other items...

    6C27D1D8-A0F8-44AD-96CF-A73C125C1686.jpeg Lula Plate

The Mushroom Pilaf was made with cracked wheat which is maybe the closest to actual Armenian cuisine they had. When asking the owner during a brief lull about the lack he smiled and wiggled his eyebrows.

Cabbage Salad was a fairly fine shred and not too acorn. Nicely balanced with a good crunch.

Tabuleh was pretty darn good as far as salads go. Not sure what the green was (parsley, some relative of mint) but it’s mild flavor complemented the tomato nicely.

It has been a long time since I’ve visited and boy! What grand changes!

Last time I was there it was much simpler, less decorations, the small (maybe 5 item buffet) was on tables where the bar is.

It was also glad to see a Nepalese rice dish join the stewed goat.

    F675EDC2-E851-4A77-8EC9-4C4F7C6A6174.jpeg Meat round

I did one plate of meat dishes which were mostly without spiciness. The standout on this plate was the Tandoori Chicken. Awesome smoky flavor and, as always, the raw onion was a nice complement.

Next was a plate of vegetarian items. All were very good and I was glad to see the heat turned up. Mmmm... The highlight? Mushroom Marsala. Wonderfully rich gravy and chock full of nice mushroom chunks.

The Samosa and a fritter item were on this plate and hit the spot. The little Samosa has a nice hit of spice allowing me to forgive the extra dough.

Going back for a third plate had me dishing up some more butter chicken and mushrooms. I would of also grabbed another piece of Tandoori Chicken but the pieces were on the big side.

I would say there wasn’t a clinker in the group.

    Macushla Brewing Co
    1516 E Lake Ave, Glenview

Really looking forward to this visit. Gonna have a snack delivered from Hackney's On Lake next door while trying the brews.

    Friday (10-19 12:15 to 1:00) Lunch Out...

    Mazalae Mongolian Restaurant
    9216 Waukegan Rd, Morton Grove

... and of course the LTH North Lunch Group outing to Monica's tomorrow (10-16)

Ah, yes, Everest is one of the good ones. Many happy lunches there.

There was an Indian buffet at lunch (and menu otherwise) associated with the Big Cinemas a mile west of Everest. When I went, more years ago than I'd care tot admit, it was VERY limited, less than Everest was before the expansion, thought they brought the tandoori chicken to you fresh at the table on a sizzling plate. The quality was a step or two above Everest. The Tandori chicken and goat stew were fall off the bone tender, although the goat stew had almost no bones to fall off of just big chunks of lean meat. The kulfi was the best I ever had, including on Devon Avenue.

The current name, Ruchi, that I now see in Google street view, does not trigger any memories, and their menu does not list a buffet (though sometimes restaurants have them but don't list them online). I don't recall anything non-indian before, so I suspect big changes. http://ruchichicago.com/dine-menu.html

Still, the menu looks interesting, I'd meet you there (subject to the ground rule of no pizza) for buffet if they have it, order off menu otherwise, but not this week, too many lunches already that will be breaking my new "diet". They share a lobby with the movie theater, and I think people buy food there to take into the theater, so the pizza may well be frozen factory produced intended primarily for the theater crowd.

I don't remember (if you even know) how much longer you will be working in the neighborhood. Hmm, being that it is another 2+ minutes each direction, probably you could not afford the time, or at least not unless you call and ascertain they do have a buffet. I won't call because I'd be better off NOT adding one more buffet lunch.

I am into my 5th week of a 7 week contract (could be extended again?). This week is planned (Mongolian) so there are 2 more opportunities.

    Ruchi Restaurant
    9180 W Golf Rd, Niles

Looking at the pictures posted in Google it does appear they still have a buffet (at least as of January)...

    https://www.google.com/maps/place/Ruchi ... 5125?hl=en

... and probably only on Friday's and the weekend as those are the only days they are open for lunch service.

It does sound good that we will be able to get together next week on Friday!

While my list of places to visit was long there was a narrower list of places I really wanted to try...

    Krua Thai
    3542 Milwaukee Ave, Northbrook
(I would like to try the local Thai offerings)

    The Greenwood Restaurant
    910 Greenwood, Glenview
(I do have a fondness for diners)

    Riobamba Latin Kitchen
    1869 Waukegan Rd, Glenview
    (Not quite Mexican)

Chances are the Thai place will make the cut for the final week.

But who knows? Maybe the contract will be extended again. :)

I saw the “Restaurant Closed” signs thinking ‘until dinner’ but there was one on each window put up with tape.

I stopped in the theater, talked to the manager and he mentioned they had been closed for a month and a half.

Dang! I was looking forward to some Indian inspired pizza too. Tandoori Chicken and onion. :)

I’ve been also looking at the Filipino restaurants in the area, any recommendations?

    Mazalae Mongolian Restaurant
    9216 Waukegan Rd, Morton Grove

Opens at 11 but they were not ‘up and running’ at 12:15. Meal ran around an hour. Complementary cookies (fried bread brushed with sugar water) and hot water for tea, Instant coffee.

In the time we were there two other tables filled with compatriots. One with heaping plates of Huushuur and the other with big bowls of soup.

Staff extremely friendly, welcoming us and thanking us for visiting. Mom turned over waitressing duties to her daughter when she became available. Apologized for not being ready and for the wait with items coming out. Dad in the kitchen. Mongolian music videos on the TV which they turned on and down when we arrived.

Sriracha and soy sauce on the table. Cold water and in a carafe.

Crunchy Flatbread (Gambar) - Not as crunchy nor flaky as I might of expected, chewy. Very good nonetheless.

    8566F17E-EACE-464F-A939-19E5D4480AE3.jpeg

Dumplings (Buuz) (steamed not fried (also available)) - Very tasty! Wrapper a little thick, full of broth (nice big squirt on bite).

    CD74BD6E-DD6E-4D05-8210-E96BFC50028F.jpeg

Empanadas (Huushuur) - Also tasty! Flat, not flaky. Came with a side of sweet and sour sauce.

    A5F9199B-9303-4CAE-A66D-C788A3567E3C.jpeg

Stir Fry Noodle (Tsuivan) - Always one of my favorite style of dishes. Tender meat.

    56C26160-F0FE-47BC-A09F-1EF43D772765.jpeg

Milk Tea Dumpling Soup (Banshtai Tsai) - Same dumplings as the entree but smaller. Mild flavor to the broth. Not too milky as I expected.

    CFC17E10-FDAF-4F9D-8227-BA7C7DB80792.jpeg

Cabbage Salad - Not too tangy, fresh and crunchy. Nice sized serving.

    3FC6E926-2CFA-4A4E-806C-0A17CF951D47.jpeg

Cookies - Described above. Served refrigerator cold.

    10371271-E4D1-4C31-A16E-07F5D0E6CA7B.jpeg

Potato Salad - Not mayonnaise based. A little lacking in flavor. A sprinkle of salt helps.

    D5B40502-93D8-47D0-9B44-5FF892AB79BB.jpeg

Tea and Maxim Instant Coffee (sweetened with cream in the package) - Tasty! Intended to be mixed in 6 oz of water so I made a double. :)

    56A3476B-2EF6-4B25-852B-4B095D7AACEF.jpeg

All in all a very nice visit with great and plentiful food and wonderful hosts.

I did my research and there are several authentic Mongolian items on the menu with several borrowed from other countries. The Mongolian names associated with ‘other’ dishes appear to be made up as descriptive.

Mazalae (or Mazaalai) is the only desert bear. The Gobi Bear is almost extinct with only 30 left.

    Complimentary cookies

They were served as an appetizer, maybe complementary because they were not up and running?

No language barrier as they clearly said “cookie” several times.

One of the menus mentioned ‘ice cream’ as being available for dessert but I think it was older.

    Chicken Ati-Atihan

    Ten Ninety Brewing Co

Sorry I missed posting my lunch from yesterday!

    P.J.'s Moon Doggies
    1702 Milwaukee Ave, Glenview

Looking for the gold I usually will go with the Signature item and in this case...

    961182D8-F5E2-4540-BD4B-8910CE7C784B.jpeg “Moon Doggies 1/2 Pounder”
Came with a cup of slaw

    D057C699-B796-473C-8520-BEC31A4F4FBE.jpeg Cheese Fries
Think thin McDonalds fries. Cooked correctly and a standard cheese sauce (glop). I didn't expect anything better.

Cup of Cream of Chicken Rice with Lemon soup. Not too creamy but still pretty good

They asked and missed medium rare. Very good, flame broiled and still juicy (not quite running down my chin). The bacon had a nice smoky flavor.

Supposed to be toasted garlic kaiser roll but couldn’t taste the garlic. That would of been awesome!

A suggestion to try which is on your list is Riobamba Latin Kitchen in Glenview and is only 1 mile away from Ten Ninety Brewing Co on Waukegan Rd. The couple times I have been there the sandwiches where pretty large and very tasty.

This place is a real gem and makes me miss my time working in Glenview. Really, really kind staff. That cabbage salad was always a highlight. Crisp and nicely acidic - I'm not a big meat person so I can't comment on the kababs - I always liked them - but I appreciated how they put attention into every single thing they put on the plate. Glad to see it get some love.

I’m the same strip mall is Ewa’s Pierogi. It was recently visited by the LTHNLG. Good stuff!

    Thanks for the heads up!

Today I had a situation where I ate my lunch for breakfast so a quick carryout was in order and this looked like a good option in the online photos. Steam tables right up front, almost counter service.

Nope. The steam tables were not in use and my order went into the kitchen and there was a 15 minute wait. I even made sure I got in before noon to avoid that rush.

An order is 10 so I made it 5 meat and 5 potato. Sides of sautéed onions and fried bacon. Of course a bowl of Chicken Noodle.

The onions were great, fresh but the bacon was room temperature and had no grease. Obviously prepared ahead of time.

Pierogis were fine and about what you would expect nice and plump. I wish I asked for a butter bath. :)

Soup was bordering on a box mix. :( Weak broth with flavorless bits of carrots and thin noodles. Besides the broth the rest only filled 1/10 of the container.

It was good if you need to fulfill a pierogi fix but not necessarily a destination.
