When it comes to authentic, chewy, East Coast-style boiled bagels, options in the Chicago area are slim. North suburbanites have Kaufman’s and New York Bagel & Bialy.
But everyone else has been out of luck, having to put up with bagels that are more like round bread. That’s about the change now that a home baker in Oak Park plans to open the Daly Bagel cafe.

I believe that the Onion Roll on North Ave in Oak Park gets their bagels from New York Bagel & Bialy. I do know they used to.

It was a recent source of controversy in this thread and some of us feared it would end this way regardless... but the Nancy's on Elston is done. A couple weeks ago the "Closed for Remodeling, Opening January 21st" sign was replaced with two large "For Rent" signs obviously signalling the commercial space (rather than a residential unit above) is for rent. The last straw was when the phone number finally went to a Disconnected recording.

As I noted before the thread got cleaned up, this one really hurts because there are now just three "original" Nancy's locations left that operate independently of the franchise system that bought and franchised the concept from the original owners, and now there's only one left in the city limits.

Now that Bay Leaf of the Orient has vacated the spot, it has re-opened as O'Manny's. The local rumor mill is that previous managers of C. Manny's are behind the new iteration with more or less the same menu and recipes. I plan to stop in soon to confirm.

There are signs up for Bliss Resto at 1522 West Montrose in the old el Maya space. I can’t find a website but yelp describes it as “Asian fusion, American.” Yelp has some nice photos and they quote the owner, Tantai S., as describing their food as tasty and creative.

This is not technically an opening but Detroit style pizza icon Buddy's Pizza is expected to be coming to Chicago ("a matter of when, not if") as part of their expansion to the Midwest. Their first location outside of Detroit is opening in Grand Rapids soon.

It's a "coming", seems perfectly appropriate for a topic titled "Openings, Closings, Comings & Goings".

Former Charlatan space at 1329 W Chicago Ave
Vajra, a contemporary Nepalese and Indian restaurant in West Town, will debut on Thursday and reservations are online...
Co-owner Dipesh Kakshapaty is Nepalese and helped open Cumin, a well-regarded Nepalese restaurant in Wicker Park. While the restaurants are nearby and will serve similar items, such as momos — the popular Nepalese dumplings — Vajra’s approach is different. While a menu wasn’t available immediately, Kakshapaty teased unique items such as goat steak. He’ll also use suppliers used at many successful Chicago restaurants such as meat from Slagel Family Farm and Rare Tea Cellar.

I visited HopCat a few times.
Nobody has asked me; but I will submit that (and this submission slices my soul with a serrated knife) the chain's insistance of serving only craft beers brewed by independent breweries [a|k|a N.B.: the Brewers' Association's definition of a craft brewer], hurt it in Chicago. Craft beer patrons in Chicago were seemingly nonplussed by being unable to have beers from Goose Island, Lagunitas, Founders, and Ballast Point, at HopCat.

The last time I went to HopCat; I had a better time afterward at Frank's Bar, a 4:00 am bar south of there @ 2503 N. Clark St. :)

Jilly's Bistro closed before the Evanston Lunch Group could get there. Notice on door said it closed Feb 4. Does the sign mean they failed some city inspection? That is a question, I really don't know. At least they aren't "closed for renovation" [grin].

I called Jilly's Cafe and was told that they sold the restaurant.

Difficult to read the numbers on the notice, looks like 8-6-1 8-6-4 8-6-5. 8-6-4 and 8-6-5 are "Issuance of License" and "Transfer of Ownership" so it does look like they're just closed while the new owners get their licenses in place.

Noticed an "AVAILABLE FOR RENT" sign in the window of Steingold's Station, 4642 N Francisco Ave, over by the Francisco Brown Line stop. I went here a couple times, but it was weird. The hours were strange, and somehow the food was a pale imitation of that at the Steingold's mothership on Irving Park. Guess I wasn't the only one to think so.

On the way home last night noticed signage up at the intersection of Hart's Road and Milwaukee (across from the cemetery on the west and the Sherwin WIlliams strip mall on the north) for "Joe Donut." I can only assume it's a second location for the tiny spot in Glenview, although the signage looks a little different. While I'm always happy to see a new place opening, this seems an odd spot for this kind of business. Although it might make for a nice little detour on rides home along the bike path.

From my alderman John Arena’s Facebook Page:
“El Asadero Colombiano is busy renovating the corner space as well as the storefront to the north at 4800 N. Central. This family-owned restaurant will bring authentic Colombian food to the Jefferson Park neighborhood, expanding the delicious offerings on the far northwest side. The owners expect to open in the next few months.”

Steingold’s Station, the spinoff of popular new-school Jewish deli Steingold’s of Chicago, closed back in October. Owner Aaron Steingold posted in a neighborhood Facebook group that “we are simply unable to deliver the consistency and quality that we strive for, that you deserve, and that we produce on a daily basis at our flagship location” and that he “will work on finding a space closer to the Manor with an actual commercial kitchen.”
