Lola’s Coney Island seemed a faithful (enough) rendition, though its been a while since I've back to backed American/Lafayette in Detroit. Surprisingly I liked the New York best of the three, all natural casing, Coney, Chicago and New York. Avgolemeno thick rich tasty without resorting to heavy thickeners.

Seating at chest high rail around the room, parking lot, friendly, service seemed smooth for just being open a week or so.

I take it that means they buy bagged chili from National Coney Island in Detroit?

    That was a good lunch!

I’ve been enjoying different preparations for hotdogs lately and this was a good one.

Not a sweeter chili as you might find in Cincinnati and without beans as I expect from a hotdog sauce. Simple soft bun, hotdog was milder than a Vienna (Vienna available for an additional charge upon request).

Considered a few of their other items...

Chicago Style Hotdog - figured I’d only be disappointed.

Wasn’t in the mood for a burger.

New York Style dog - but with grilled onions instead of the onion sauce. I love grilled onions but no thanks.

Chili-cheese fries - (bacon-cheese also available) but decided to go with the onion rings. Tasty but nothing special. Sauce was their house special aioli. The aioli is also on a few of the sandwiches and would be tasty there too.

Loose Burger - which I figured to be similar to an to a Made-Rite? They add chili which is also offered at Maid-Rite (The Chili-Rite) but the odd thing is that it’s served on a hotdog bun? ... they do have hamburger buns? The manager mentioned it does cause confusion.

It was mentioned the owner is transplant from Detroit and wanted to bring his favorite food here. Asking about the Coney connection between Detroit and New York and it was mentioned that there was a mass exodus to Detroit and brought this sandwich along. From there it spread throughout the state.

Since I was visiting on a Tuesday the Steak Sandwich is a Wednesday special... Lobster Sandwich on Friday’s.

All in all a nice and enjoyable visit! A nice taste of Detroit (maybe Michigan) here in Chicago.

That’s not unusual for regional foods brought to Chicago.

I remember a few local Philly Steak places that proudly ship in their steaks from Philly.

Stopped in for two dogs and some fries tonight. The Coney was great, snappy dog and good chili. The New York was terrible though. It was made with what looked like a hot dog-sized bratwurst that was pink in the middle and mushy, and the kraut had no crunch. It was just soft, and honestly sort of gross. Fries were fine, nothing exciting and a bit over salted.

I've had and enjoyed their New York dog before. Not sure what happened today but it was a mess, and will give me pause before ordering again.

This spot is atmospheric and accessible; encouraged. I really like their neatly-packaged take on the Chicago dog. The avgolemono could be saltier and lemonier but it's nice to have a spot in this vicinity doing it every day without extortionist valet parking, and it comes with a big bag of good oyster crackers. Cool staff and vibe.

The focus here is obviously the hot dogs and the Chicago Meats Detroit (Vienna beef dog with Detroit Coney toppings) was great.

But don't sleep on the burger. Perhaps not destination worthy, but only a half step below that.
