What will probably end up as the Midwest's largest Chinese grocery store will be opening on August 28th at 2105 S Jefferson, called 88 Marketplace, according to a WeChat post from a Chicago page. In total - 80,000 square feet:

(Translate the page with Google Translate)

Previous article with more content and pictures (again, translate):
    http://www.chineseofchicago.com/Content.aspx?nid=21619

It is supposed to be more than a grocery store and more than just Chinese food as well - there is supposed to be a food court there with Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese, etc food as well as all sorts of alcohol from Asia and I believe some home goods sold there too.

This is in the same complex as the recently opened Qiao Lin Hotpot, the first US location from a chain from Chongqing. This is quickly becoming known as the best hot pot in Chicago.

There is a new parking lot with 140 free parking spaces across the street

    88 Marketplace
    2105 S Jefferson St.

    Grand opening August 28th.

A few pieces of news from Chinatown

    1. Lao Jiu Men Hot Pot either opened or is about to (unclear) right near the Chinatown Red Line stop next to Meet Fresh. This is an outpost of a hotpot brand from Toronto. The interior shots of the restaurant look pretty cool and nice.

The Sun Times has an article yesterday about East Asian community in Chicago growing, especially Chinese. The owners of the restaurant are all students at Loyola University in Chicago, all from mainland China. They spent nearly $1M on this project.

(Probably want to call ahead just to make sure they are actually open)

    Open Mon 4pm - 11pm, Tues - Sun 11:30am - 2:30pm, 4pm - 11pm

    --
    2. Meet Noodles just opened up next door to Lao Jiu Men hot pot as well, who I believe is associated with Tsaocaa bubble tea in the same complex. Looks like they offer a bunch of different stuff - not only noodle dishes but also Chinese bbq skewers

    3. A restaurant called Veggie House is opening soon in Chinatown Square at 2109 S China Pl #A. Their website does say they will be legitimately vegetarian/vegan. The majority of the menu is Chinese.

Famous Japanese cream puff brand Beard Papa's is opening in Wicker Park on August 22nd. They used to be in Block 37 but that closed. This location is a former Forever Yogurt. They mainly serve cream puffs with some traditional flavors as well as ones like oreo, dulce de leche, and green tea. They also have a few other types of dessert such as cheesecake, as well as cream-based drinks.

Their current stores in the US are in the NYC, LA, SF, Portland, Seattle, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, DC, and Boston areas. Re-add Chicago to the list.

Woo hoo!!! I loved them when they were in Block 37. What makes them so good is that the custard filling is great, and they fill them to order, which means you don't get one that was filled long before purchase and got soggy.

I'd have no problem giving them a try, but as is often the case against all logic, their only version of lamb kabob is ground lamb. Grilled chunks people! That's the good stuff.

Yes. And based on Google maps still listing a Mexican restaurant with poor reviews going back almost a year, I'd estimate 15-18 months ago.

Lots could have gone wrong - too much bread-to-filling ration with the brioche bun, folded eggs are often dry, American cheese combined with jalapena butter does not seem like a natural fit to me - and yet it all came together perfectly and was really really good. The bun was the perfect size, the eggs were creamy, the jalapena butter pulled it all together. Nice, generous amount of bacon. Would order it again in a second. Also, their potatoes are terrific, seemed to be fried whole in a very hot oil, super crispy on the outside and very creamy on the inside.

Gorilla's claim to fame is $2.95 basic rolls. A a few steps above supermarket sushi and a good value overall. Still prefer Lawrence Fish Market, but won't turn my nose up at Gorilla.

For all the vegetarians/vegans or those who enjoy the food - a new vegetarian restaurant opened in Chinatown called Veggie House that skews to authentic Chinese food. This is actually vegetarian/vegan and not "We have a vegetable dish...cooked in animal fat."

According to a Chinese site for Chicago I found, the chef for this restaurant used to work as a chef at The Peninsula Hotel which has Shanghai Terrace. My wife says this is more along the lines of Buddhist Chinese Food - very delicate. Apparently they can legitimately make vegetable dishes taste like meat (unlike a lot of the vegetarian dishes in America).
