I can't tell if you are joking or really taking a jab at this place, but I would just like to say:

    1. I have had numerous conversations with the gentleman who is patiently awaiting permits before opening. He seems genuine, passionate and has tons of experience in the industry.

    2. Yeah, the menu is ambitious but it's pretty clear where core strengths lie and I'm sure he will adapt.

    3. Take a look at the menu at Yellow Rose Cafe, which you seem to enjoy. Equally broad and lots of incongruous choices.

I look forward to giving it a try and supporting a truly independent local business. I will report on it whether I like it or not but Count Me Hoping To Be A Fan :-).

Joking, for the most part. I do tend to get itchy when a menu resembles the cafeteria at the United Nations.

I will certainly try Pastores + Brunch with high hopes and good thoughts.

I'm amazed anytime I see a new place opening in this thread, especially one coming on the precipice of winter. Maybe the gears were in motion before the shit hit the fan, and they figured they may as well recoup something? Fingers crossed they can make it.

Menu looks okay, if not a bit overpriced in some areas. It's carry out, and a hot dog with fries costs $10? Burger and fries is $14? I can't see those being big movers, at least not for me, when Red Hot Ranch is a hop and a skip down the street.

On the other hand, the tomato potato sandwich sounds like a pretty interesting concoction. Might be willing to make the trip for that.

To be fair, it's a $5 dog (Vienna) and $5 fries. You'd think they'd at least run a $7 combo. Then again, I paid $4 for a godawful side of fries today that made me nostalgic for Ore-Ida, so if the fries are really good then maybe.

Gretel plans on opening for dine in service next month, and the prices are certainly not out of line with their sister fairy tale restaurant, Little Bad Wolf.

That could be the explanation, but another is that at this point they see the end of the pandemic coming, and want to be positioned for that day.

Bridgeport is getting a hotpot restaurant on Halsted. I saw this come in a few years ago about a liquor license but they got their business license to operate a restaurant just the other day. The location is near Northern Taste, La Mom Kitchen, Happiness, etc. Something tells me this is another hotpot chain from mainland China opening in the US.

This will be the 3rd hot pot restaurant to open since the summer in Chicago. The other ones are Qiao Lin Hot Pot (2105 S Jefferson - East Pilsen) and Laojiumen (2026 S Clark - Chinatown), both the first locations for them in the US.

Haidilao, the famous hotpot chain there, is currently recruiting workers in Chicago to open in South Loop too.

There was an article about this yesterday in one of the Chicago social media sites for Chinese including pictures:
    https://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/j_Pj5kz26I6dmO5jpsJnZg

Thanks to my wife for further translating what Google had trouble with. Grand opening is October 12th (Monday - 2 weeks from today). The brand was started in the 1980s in Chengdu and is apparently quite big as they own multiple brands. The Chicago location might have a spokesperson who is a famous chef/cooking show host in China. Apparently there was no publicity about this and snuck up on people (although they filed for a liquor license a few years ago). Interior looks more like what you'd see in China in a more modern setting. The company also is big enough to have research kitchens to perfect their food.

It is skewer pot, similar to the Mrs. Gu that opened in Chinatown recently. Might be more from this group opening in Chicago in the future

Well, the one thing we know for sure is they can’t survive while paying rent and having zero sales. In any case, it is much more important to do well with the menu choices you offer than how many choices you provide. Check out the menu at Small Cheval.

While most of the restaurant news lately has been dominated by closings caused by the pandemic, 2020 has had a few bright spots. Nobu (854 W. Randolph St.), the latest high-end sushi outlet from chef Nobu Matsuhisa, is all set to open Thursday.

When we were at Nobu Rooftop early July, our server told us they wouldn't open the Nobu (full) concept indoor-restaurant until they could have full capactity (obviously something changed).

When we were at Nobu Rooftop end of August, our server told us it would open soon, albeit with a limited menu (even though they initially didn't want to do this).

So we shall see how much of what exactly is true.

Beyond cevapcici, there is not much Croatian. No Turkish coffee, which is their life blood.

Their soft boiled egg with toast and butter is $8. Two eggs any style for $13 and buttermilk pancakes for $12. I hope there is more to this than the simple description offered.
