We ate at a restaurant on the Moon. Social distancing and everyone wore masks. Great food and great service! There was, however, a total lack of atmosphere.

Hi- I live in a condo building on Ridge near Davis. I came back from the dentist today, and I noticed there were some packages on top of our mailboxes as you enter the building. I was going to bring them inside, and I noticed one of the packages was from Peppercorn Kitchens, and was a delivery they just left there. All it had on the bag was our street address. There was no name or unit number on the bag. It was still hot. I don't know who delivered it. It was pig intestines and something else with pork in it, and so it was not something I would order. The person that put the address down, probably did not realize it was a condo building. The Asian gentleman that ordered it, finally came down to get it after about 15 minutes. He probably called up the restaurant wondering where it was.

This would be the perfect time to switch to the system I experienced in Seoul. Every table had a button/call bell. Servers only came over when that button was pressed. No need for unnecessary trips from servers.

None of this sounds fun from either the customers or the servers perspective.

It's actually brilliant. You only call servers over when you need something. Cuts out the guesswork on both sides.

The same system is employed at many restaurants in Japan and I agree it's fantastic.

It is a completely different culture..

It is a completely different culture. But not because of tipping. The big cultural difference is that they don't suffer from White American Exceptionalism. Over there the government says "wear a mask, take care of each other" and they do. Over here our governor says "wear a mask, take care of each other" and a bunch of people, including those who would tell you with a straight face that they love the restaurant industry, say "eh, kinda a hassle" then they just go ahead and put the server and the other diners and the business and their community at greater risk.

I like the idea of a button on the table or some other device to signal to waitstaff when you would like them to approach. Could be as simple and inexpensive as the red and green coasters used at Brazilian churrascarias.

Taqueria El Milagro has conquered the pandemic. Each table is surrounded by plexiglass walls that, along with the tables and chairs, are sprayed and wiped between diners.

Seems like the Illinois Restaurant Association should spend more of its time encouraging members to implement a system like this rather than focusing on lobbying for life-risking expansions of the number of patrons allowed in restaurants.

Does anyone have an update on Chinatown dining? I am craving Dim Sum. We did take out in the park from Dolo a bit back, and it was OK, but is anyone doing outside dining or the like? Even non-dim sum - I need some variety.

I'm no expert, but personally I wonder if that's actually a bad idea or at best ineffective. If you think the virus is spread primarily or solely by droplets (big and heavy enough to fall to the ground within a few feet), okay, obstruct droplet spray and wipe surfaces down. If, on the other hand, you think the virus is spread primarily by aerosol particles (small and light enough to float around like cigarette smoke), then all those plexiglass sheets would seem to inhibit the ventilation needed to clear the air sufficiently.

Despite the CDC pulling back their recommendation, the scientific consensus seems to be that it can become aerosolized. I won't dine in a restaurant (or in crowded outdoor dining) until there's mass vaccination or widespread rapid testing that shrinks cases to minuscule numbers. Unfortunately, I think the winter is going to kill the majority of restaurants unless they can survive on carry-out and delivery.

Also the capacity allowed is 40 percent. Maybe this will help too.

But OTOH; I am skeptical of the public health aspect of this. This looks like a response to pressure from Bar owners economic plight. Almost all substantial spreading events all over the world have been traced to indoor spaces with forced air circulation, poor ventilation, combined with lack of distancing, non-masked patrons etc. Bars are a lot more difficult kind of space to handle the combination of distancing requirement and the mask wearing requirement, I feel. Especially if they are playing loud music and people are leaning into each other's face to talk loud.

I think the more important question is, who is going to sit in them? But I do appreciate the attempt at innovation and more importantly that they are looking at short term solutions, because if things continue as they are how many restaurants will not survive this winter.

The state is set to roll back reopening restrictions across a wide swath of suburban Chicago later this week as Illinois continues to see a major resurgence of the coronavirus. Gov. J.B. Pritzker is expected to announce Tuesday afternoon that starting later this week, indoor service will be prohibited once again at restaurants and bars in DuPage, Kane, Will and Kankakee counties, an area that’s home to more than 1 in 6 Illinois residents.
