    Claudio Velez, Chicago’s beloved “Tamale Guy,” is opening his first brick-and-mortar restaurant — and it’s in Ukrainian Village. The restaurant at 2018 W. Chicago Ave. could open in August, said Pierre Vega, Velez’s business partner.

    The story's been told over and over (see links above for a start) and the restaurant has been open over a week now. Last Saturday at noon, two hours after opening, they were close to selling out. Not Chicago's best tamales, but very tasty. I couldn't be happier for Claudio and everyone involved.

    Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but a WTTW reporter shared a post from the restaurant stating the following (not quoting word for word, it was an image so I couldn't copy and paste the text, otherwise I would):
    - Claudio had Covid symptoms, was away from work awaiting results while waiting for results, which came back positive;
    - Condition deteriorated to the point of being in an ICU on a ventilator, but is now improving on a positive trend;
    - There will be an unknown amount of medical debt, with a donation fund set up already;
    - Restaurant is closed temporarily until further notice, but not permanently.

    *The image I saw was an instagram post, but that doesn't appear to still be up, it's just on the Go Fund Me page.

    I'd like to report that I recently had Claudio's tamales and they are as good as they ever were. Pork and Chicken both tasted delicious. Delivery is quick and easy, too. It's great having these things in the fridge being home more... :).

    I wish them many more years of success.

    Yesterday the Chicago Trib had a survey about take out. They listed places that are doing take out in several categories, and they want people to vote on their favorite places. One of the categories is newly opened restaurants, and one of the restaurants that is being nominated in that category is Tamale Guy.

    It's ironic that the wife of the couple who used to be his business partners, started a gofundme page for him when Carlos came down with COVID. She raised $54,000 to go towards his medical expenses.
