Hi- I know this is short notice, but today is my birthday, and I was going to go to Al's Deli for lunch, and they are closed for Veterans day. Is there any other place in Evanston that is desperate for business that does safe takeout? Earlier this week I would have done patio, but I am sure it is too cold for that today. The most I want to spend is $30. I really don't want to do a large chain. I would rather help out a local business that does safe takeout, and all of the staff wear masks. Thanks, Nancy

Not exactly Al's but I have been going to Union Squared and Tomate often during the pandemic. Both have take out windows and you can see inside that the staff/cooks are wearing masks. Both delicious too!

Peppercorns was spectacular just about 1 week ago. The "fish filet w/ clear noodle & bean sprouts in chili oil soup" was one of the best dishes I've ever had. Unfortunately that alone would bring you to $30 after tax and tip.

But a meal from Peppercorns composed of other dishes would still be one of Evanston's best.

    Happy Birthday.

Not just for Veterans Day. Al's has been closed every Wednesday for a long time (well before the pandemic started).

Where did you go? Happy birthday!
