Looks like a new ramen place will be coming to River North. It will be taking over the former Imperial Lamian space on Hubbard & State. Can't find much more other than the name might be QRamen, and it's registered to an address in Chinatown.

    Coming soon?

    Tannour Shawarma & Bakery

Near my house, lots of parking, looked big, spacious, clean. Order at the counter, lots of tables, big menu including pizza with a good looking prominently placed pizza oven on view.

Mini pies, ground meat with spices and pine nuts fantastic. Unfortunately that was the only item, among the many we ordered, that was worth a whistle.

Shawarma on hummus, blah. Dry chicken shawarma, bland slightly grainy hummus. The brides chicken shawarma bowl was run though the de-flavoring machine, salad simply undressed veg. Zatar flatbread tasty, though there their idea of zartar is simply a few random sprigs of thyme, only.

Service friendly, prices on the slightly high side of reasonable, and speedy to the table.

All in all disappointment, though Tannour has only been open short while and will hopefully get on the food with flavor track.

Pippin’s Tavern, once a simple place on Rush Street, gets reborn in style. The menu is no longer hotdogs.

Driving on North Ave. this afternoon and noticed that "The Black Barrel Tavern" painted on the wall of the long vacant Old Town Social space at 455 W. North Ave. Logo is the same as the restaurant at 1601 W. Madison so looks like it may be a second location for them.

Bridgeport’s Ramova Theater is on its way back, in the midst of costly a renovation. It may once again be the center of a Chicago neighborhood.

The adjoining Ramova Grill is being remade too. It opened when the theater opened and since the 1950s was owned and run for generation by the Gertos family until closing in 2012. The new place will be operated by sixth-generation Bridgeport native Kevin Hickey, an accomplished chef who runs the nearby Duck Inn.

A vacant building on the north side of Wheeling's Restaurant Row may soon see some activity.

The entrepreneurs behind a Chicago restaurant and brewery called District Brew Yards want to open a second location at 700 N. Milwaukee Ave. That's the 2.8-acre site of the former Ram Restaurant & Brewery, which closed in January 2019.

"Le Select, 504 N. Wells Street, planned for a mid- to late-summer opening." (2022)

Boka has lured Chicago-area native Daniel Rose back home. Rose is the chef at Michelin-starred Le Coucou in New York, the 2017 James Beard Award winner for Best New Restaurant in America. Eater NY critic Ryan Sutton awarded Le Coucou a three-star review in 2016, praising it for its traditional sensibilities and the way it impressed “New Yorkers with a few of the overlooked culinary wonders of yesteryear.”

Rose moved from Paris in 2015 to open Le Coucou. He made a name for himself in France where he opened Spring, an intimate fine dining restaurant that closed after a 10-year run. Katz and Boehm say they’ve long admired Rose’s work and have known him for years. Rose, who’s from Wilmette, still has family in the area and Boka managed to bring him home: “Daniel is as good as anyone there is in the realm of food and cooking,” Katz says.

Rose wasn’t available for an interview — a rep says he’s right now focusing on getting Le Coucou back on its feet; it reopened last month for the first time since the start of the pandemic. He still has two restaurants in France. Before opening Le Coucou, he mulled opening a Chicago restaurant, but then he partnered with Stephen Starr — the East Coast magnate with restaurants in New York and Philadelphia — to open Le Coucou.

The old Rom location at Hyatt Center will soon be a new Fare. Up North, in the Fresh Farms strip mall on Touhy, the vacated Starbucks will open soon as Poke Bros.
