While NYC is not known for great Vietnamese food at all, there was one shining star near Madison Square Garden surprisingly that was turning out amazing bowls of Northern Vietnamese pho. What made it so good was the "dam toi" that went with it in jars on the side. This is basically garlic-chile vinegar sauce with whole or half cloves of garlic that have been marinating in it. I absolutely love pho, but this takes it to another level. I became a fan of the northern version as a result although I still love the version that's still so common everywhere.
Dam Toi:
https://www.vietworldkitchen.com/blog/2 ... m-toi.htmlSo my question is, who in the Chicago area is making authentic Northern Vietnamese pho, and who if anyone actually has the dam toi (whether on a secret menu or per usual)? Sadly the place in NYC closed and since my wife and I are relocating back to Chicago, I figure I would ask to see if it's possible to get in the area. I miss it a lot!
Much appreciated!
