Texas based chain Fajita Pete's is coming to the Chicago area opening in the former Mei Lin House at the SW corner of Lake & Skokie Blvd in Wilmette. Just noticed it on Google maps, the website doesn't have any timing info.

    Greetings from the Valhalla Team,

We are reaching out with very exciting news, Valhalla is moving!
Thank you very much for your support over the past year and half. It is that support that has provided us the inspiration and motivation to make this decision, and we want to share this wonderful news with you.
Our last service at Time Out Market will be on New Year's Eve, 12/31. We'd love to have you in one last time prior to closing down operations there, so please let us know if you'd like reservation prior to the closure, otherwise reservations are available via this: link

While we cannot yet disclose our new location, we will be moving to Wicker Park, and will provide the details soon. We hope to open in our new space in early February, and will keep you posted.

Additionally, we have started a waiting list for guests who would like to have early access to reservations once we formally announce our opening. Please let us know if you'd like to be added to the list and will reach out with available days & times as we move closer to the opening.

Again, thank you very much for your patronage. We look forward to seeing you again and are eager to share more of the details with you in the coming days.

Sad to be posting that Mel’s Craft BBQ in Park Ridge is closing. From their instagram:

We are tremendously sad to say that Mel's Craft BBQ is closing. Unfortunately, we just couldn't make it work.
We thank all our customers, regulars, old friends and new for the support over the last nineteen months.
There will be one last time to get your MCBBQ fix at going out of business discounts, cash pickup only for whole smoked briskets, trays of pulled pork, and trays of sides. Pickup this Saturday between Noon and 3pm.
Feed a crowd, or just put some in your freezer. Menu and prices in comments. Orders must be placed before Noon Friday by calling Michelle at 224-985-3458.
Park Ridge has always been important to me. I will continue to enjoy being part of the community one way or another.

There will never be another egg roll exactly like Kow Kow's, but you can get close at Mee Mah on Peterson. It's owned by the same family, so the recipe and taste profile is similar. A word of warning, though. Do NOT order anything else on the menu. Disappointment would surely follow if you do.

    From their facebook page:
    Dear Family and Friends,

After more than 40 years, my parents have decided to retire and will be closing Mee Mah this coming Sunday, December 10, 2023.

From the bottom of our hearts, the Wong family and the entire Mee Mah family want to thank you for the years we were able to serve you, get to know you, watch your children grow, and be a part of your lives in so many ways.

We want to express our deepest gratitude to all our customers who come from near and far and supported us through many generations. My parents’ decision to close was not made lightly and comes with mixed emotions as they reflect on the countless memories created within the Mee Mah walls.

Please stop by one last time to enjoy your favorite dish (or until our inventory is depleted).

Unfortunately, we will not be taking any reservations and expect wait times to be long…but certainly worth it!

    With much gratitude,
On behalf of my parents, Bill and Sandy Wong, and the entire Mee Mah Family

Taps N Tenders in South Naperville has closed. From their Facebook page:

Yesterday (December 4?) was TNT Chicken and Sports last day operating. We appreciate the 5 years of support that we received from Naperville and the surrounding communities.
This was not an easy decisions to make. The pandemic and post pandemic times have been very rough and volatile for the restaurant industry. The post pandemic inflation has brought unforeseen hurdles that eventually were too much for our business to bear.

A coffee shop in the River North neighborhood delivers the warmth and substantiality of Kazakh culture as soon as the doors open.

Enter Tary Coffee House and you’ll see elegant dishware, like wooden bowls and trays, and cozy rugs, all from Kazakhstan, as well as a special green cabinet that was used for generations as a refrigerator but now is symbolic decor.

Tary Coffee House not only brings some of the sights but also the traditional smells of Kazakhstan with a selection of coffee, tea, baked goods, filling meals and more. Symbat Zharkynkyzy, 26, is the franchise owner of the local Tary and said it’s the first location of the chain to open in the U.S. Tary was the first of its kind in Kazakhstan even, Zharkynkyzy said.

“We never had traditional or ethnic coffeehouses before that show our traditions, like what we eat in our homes,” she said. “Tary Coffee House was the first to represent Kazakh culture, even in Kazakhstan, as a coffee shop.”

A restaurant that will follow Islamic dietary codes, including no pork products and no alcohol, is looking to open at the former location of D’Agostino’s Pizza and Pub at 742 W. Higgins Road in Park Ridge.

Pending city building inspections, co-owner Daniel Kadyrbekov said he anticipates a soft opening at Dua Italian Cuisine & Steakhouse before the end of the week and a grand opening by next week. The restaurant will be halal, meaning it will comply with Islamic food laws and will offer mocktails instead of alcohol and substitutions for pepperoni and other pork products.

Are they closing? It's not mentioned on their FB page. In fact, they are selling gift certificates. I love this place. Everything is good. How long to I have to go back and indulge? (And it's not just great for pastrami. Their BBQ brisket is wonderful, too. And their non-BBQ items are great -- love the Pollo Rokko.)

NO! Big Ange's is not closing. That was just a carelessly posted digression on this, a very specifically purposed thread.

What did close a while back, as noted in this post, is Fritzi's Deli in Oak Park. The mention of Big Ange's in that sub-discussion was a complete non sequitur.

I did a riff on how this had opened about a month ago as a symptom of the redundancy of Evanston's dining options. But to be fair, I think they're less sandwich focused than nearby 10Q. They offer full birds unlike the competitor.
