An Anatolian tapas restaurant has opened in Lakeview, bringing a taste of Turkey and the Middle East to Chicago.

Avaspi opened Tuesday at 1258 W. Belmont Ave. It serves Turkish, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine with a focus on mezze platters, which are shareable appetizers like tapas. It takes the place of Pescadero, a seafood and oyster bar that closed in January 2023.

From Eater: Lincoln Square Taproom’s Owner to Open a Bistro in the Cafe Selmarie Space
Andrew Pillman, the owner of neighboring beer bar Lincoln Square Taproom, has applied for a liquor license under the business name Willow Cafe and Bistro at 4729 N. Lincoln Avenue. The restaurant is Pillman’s second takeover of a Lincoln Square institution, as in 2021 he opened the taproom in the former home of Huettenbar, one of the area’s last-remaining German taverns. In 2021, he opened a sister bar, Uptown Taproom. Pillman also runs Lakeview Taproom, which opened in July 2020. In November 2023, the space rebranded to add a coffee component.
    ...
Cafe Selmarie owner Birgit Kobayashi announced her plans to retire and close Cafe Selmarie in September 2023 but has yet to share a closing date. The restaurant will remain open “through at least the end of April,” according to its website.

Pillman and Kobayashi did not respond to requests for comment.

A sit-down Korean barbecue restaurant will be the latest addition to a shopping center on the south side of Arlington Heights that’s under new ownership.

Marbling — named for the white specs of intramuscular fat in the steak that will be served there — will open in the 2,700-square-foot storefront space at 63 W. Golf Road in the Arlington Towne Square Shopping Center.

Whoever is developing their menu items needs to add a half-hot dog/half mozzarella stick dipped in half hot Cheetos and half Pepcid. And possibly throw a statin in there as well.

At some point recently En Hakkore Bibimbap & Taco closed permanently. I'm pretty bummed about that, but last couple years went really downhill. I absolutely hated when they switched to ordering only on a kiosk, but also the food just wasn't as good as it used to be (and it used to be really good).

En Hakkore 2.0 Poke is still good, however. I wish they would add the Bibimbap to that menu!

    Well, I spoke too soon.

A mother and son have opened an Edgewater location of their cafe, Dulce De Leche. Jaqueline Contreras and her son, Josue Moreno, opened Dulce De Leche, 1127 W. Bryn Mawr Ave., in Edgewater in February, serving a menu largely inspired by the family’s favorite Latin American dishes. It’s the second spot for them, as they have another Dulce De Leche in Albany Park.

Even though I hadn't been in 15+ years, I was kinda bummed about this. In those heady days of the secret menus, Spoon offered a few best-in-show items: Isaan sausages, naem khao thawt, miang kham. I was trying to remember the history —Wanpen cooked there pre-Rainbow, no? I also had no idea the Imm people owned it for the last 10+ years.

Correct—glad I have a large stash of her Issan sausage in my freezer but hoping that her departure from Rainbow and Spoon’s closure aren’t the end of the best Naem Khao Tod and Chinese Broccoli with Crispy Pork forever.

Spoon Thai has had some managerial neglect in recent years and as far as I can tell business has not been very strong. They have been closed on Wednesdays for some time and never bothered to change hours on website. For a while the only timing option for on-line orders was asap. Spoon was the closest Thai restaurant to my home, and I would pass by there pretty often. I have been using carryout a couple times a month from restaurants in the 4600 blocks of North Western with some degree of rotation among Spoon, Greenleaf Thai and Tom Lee Chinese. Spoon will be missed, but I can get along pretty well without it. The home page has not been updated as of a few minutes ago but online ordering shows closed and ordering is not available.

Johann Moonesinghe, 41, CEO and co-founder of Austin-based restaurant fintech startup inKind, completed the acquisition April 16, according to court filings, setting the table for Etta to pay off its secured creditors, emerge from bankruptcy and focus on its acclaimed flame-kissed fare.
“Etta is a phenomenal concept,” said Moonesinghe, who was in Chicago Monday visiting the original Etta Bucktown restaurant. “I think it’s highly scalable, great food, wood-fired cooking. Our intent is actually to grow Etta as a brand.”
