We wound up going to Exchequer. It's the closest to our parking and destination. 2 diners arrived early and when I called to ask where they were, they said, "It's just a bar so don't expect much." But if transported to my bailiwick, Exchequer would have some of the nicest decor, service and atmosphere in the area. I guess Chicago standards are a little higher than exurban ones.
Anyhoo, we had an appetizer trio (cheese curds, chicken tenders, fries), chicken rice soup, a Cobb salad, and a medium thin (thicker than their crispy but in the tavern style universe) pizza with pepperoni and meatballs. Soup got the highest marks. Cheese curds were smallish orange cheddar pieces, a little overdone. Chicken tenders were real breast pieces but again a little overdone. Fries shoestring, fine but not at all remarkable. Salad also fine but not outstanding, their "small" is plenty for a single entree. Pizza was pretty good: tons of cheese and good toppings well distributed over the pie, but really should have been ordered "well done" for adequate crispiness. If they would have shifted some cooking time from the fried foods to the pizza, it all would have been considerably better.
Service was slow to get started. We weren't acknowledged for quite a while, perhaps because it was "seat yourself" and one half of the building was unused that night. But once we received menus, I'd rate it as excellent, far more attentive and polite than expected for the scope of the food.
Next time we'll give Millers a try. I'll keep Exchequer on the list, though.
