i stopped in to Wurst Behavior today after hitting the independence branch of the library directly across the street... i ordered takeout as i refuse to pay LAZ for a parking meter and took my chances on not getting a ticket ( i didnt). i had a pleasant chat with Kim, one of the employees while waiting for my nashville hot chicken sausage. the sausage was substantial, in a custom bun made by a local bakery. it wasnt quite french bread, softer than that, but much sturdier and longer than a hot dog bun. i also ordered a batch of hushpuppies. i thought $10 was a lot for that until i opened up the box and found 15 non-greasy pups, along with a 1000 isle type dunking sauce. the good news: i liked the sausage, the bun and the pups, but the expected pickles on the sandwich were pretty much cucumber slices that might have been dunked in a vat of vinegar for 10 seconds. i hate cukes, so had to remove them and i missed the crunch and the acid pickles would have brought. the bad news: the 'hot' sausage was not hot at all. which i didnt mind, but it was misleading to call them nashville hots... the other bad news is they use styrofoam for takeout so i wont be getting takeout again, as styrofoam never disintegrates in the landfill-never... as the room is very pleasant and they have cocktails and beer, i won't mind eating in.

Nice to see they're working hard to live up to their name!

very funny! but I didn't mean to give the impression that I don't wish them well and that I won't go back because I do and I will!

Oh I know, I just couldn't help myself. Seems like they're in line with the strong Chicagoland tradition of punny names for hot dog stands, but this one goes a bit more negative than most. Like calling your joint "Wieners and Losers" or "For the Dogs" or "Franks But No Thanks". Though I too wish them nothing but success!

I stopped by their sister restaurant, Pierogi Kitchen, this week, which is in striking distance from work. I was stoked I could recreate my order from my dearly departed Podhalanka – zurek and sauerkraut/mushroom pierogies.

Ordering ahead had its obstacles – ordering on the website was non-functional and my call was put on hold for 10 minutes. The space had good vibes, inviting on a frigid afternoon. Maybe it's the Dry January talking (oh, the shame!) but their line up of Polish craft beer looked extra enticing.

Unfortunately the grub did not live up to my gold standard (even in the waning latter days of Helena and co.) Pierogies were borderline soggy. Filling was kraut heavy and I didn't hate the tang, but shroom flavors were muted. For garnish, in place of caramelized onions were poorly cut scallions. Zurek lacked the fermented rye tang I love about the soup. The kielbasa had good smoke and garlic, though was coarse ground, while I prefer an emulsified bounce. Most unappealing about the soup was boiled egg with membrane still half attached. And not a fleck of fresh dill to be found.

I might try bellying up to the bar for some zimne pivo in the future, but won't rush back for take out.
