I've scored fritters twice this year. Both without an elaborate pre-order.

Today I was out investigating a scene (client charged). Eureka! It dawned on me I wasn't far from OFD. I punched in coordinates from my phone realized I was no more than 8 minutes away & called them.

I asked them for 5 fritters, they said when do you need them, I told them I was nearby & they said come one we've got 5 right now.

I get there & they were ready for take away. Really efficient service.

I dropped off 2 for a couple of friends who adore them. Gave 1 away to a friend who is expecting a baby the end of next month, that I ran into as I was at Red Hen Bakery picking up sandwich bread. That leaves 2. One for me & 1 for my trusted & hard-working paralegal.

More Lilly gilding from Old Fashioned Donuts, Apple Fritter with pecans. Good size quality pecans added crunchy counterpoint, impossible to resist trying, but an OFD apple fritter is pretty much perfect as is.

A randomly selected specimen (with pecans) tipped the scales at 593.8 grams or about one pound, five ounces. Fritters are now $2.29 (plain, without pecans), still surely one of the best confection values in Chicago.

Stopped by today on my way to a picnic in Kankakee and was able to get one fresh out of the fryer with pecans. $3 even. Awesome on the long drive.

Was mildly distressed to see a few in the case that were a bit smaller and asked for the big one in the back.

A month or so ago they were as big as my head. :)

It occurs to me that I am now a whoooole lot closer to OFD (it's a mere ten miles!) AND I heard a rumor that they now accept credit cards. Oh well, I needed to fatten up a bit for winter anyway.

No, sorry if that was unclear. That was an Old Fashioned Donuts fritter that I brought downtown with me to taunt people at Doughnut Vault. Only there was nobody outside in line to taunt so I just took some pictures and then brought the fritter to my office to share.

Got it. I thought, wow they must have gotten the doughnut man from OFD to work for them on their fritter b/c it looked just like and OFD fritter. Since the Doughnut Vault is less than half a block away from the club, if there was no line, I could justify grabbing that fritter, if it tasted like an OFD fritter, after a workout.

Glad to know temptation isn't that close.

As it turned out, it was samosa day at work, so after a couple of samosas I was in no condition to tackle that bad boy solo. edit: not to mention that I had one of their glazed croissants on the commute

I did drop off a fritter to another LTH friend downtown, and he apparently ate it all by himself. I haven't heard from him lately though, I hope he survived!

Last of the apple fritters picked up on the way out of Chicago finished after about 6 days. A touch stale but still a big hit (kids wanted to know if we could go back to Chicago for more).

I do think that this place should get more traffic.

FYI 1. blueberry donuts are available MWF (I couldn't get any)

Since only the beginning of the journey for the Texas is pictured in this thread (GWiv's pic above), here's what it looks like just before 4 of us had it for breakfast

It always seems busy whenever I go... always a small line...

And, BTW, there is no reason to ever have a "stale" OFD Apple Fritter - or to deny the kids ;-) Pick up *lots* of them... keep a half-dozen out for consumption over 2-3 days. And freeze the rest.

(Ive frozen them often, in a box - and they work out great when frozen, stay excellent. Dont get dry at all, probably due to all the fat involved. You *could* actually eat them cold out of the freezer - theyre pretty good as frozen apple-pops, sort of. But, ideally, just let it thaw for a little bit... or else just pop it in an over for a few minutes, and they will be quite excellent. Note - Ive only ever done this to OFD Apple Fritters, and gotten great results... never have tried to freeze a donut or anything else from OFD, so dont know how *those* would work..).

They're very cheap, I want to say around $3. I purchased 2 dz once and didn't get a price break. Not that I cared. Very few things supply as much happiness for $3.

They must've fried up a new batch because there were only a few fritters left around noon. Yep, $3.19 for plain, and $3.41 with nuts.

Just got home with 6 fritters (well, 5, I ate one in the car) and a dozen donuts. A bit of a drive but worth it.
Next time I need to remember to bring a pint of ice cold milk or a large coffee for the ride home. You really need something to wash down a fritter on the drive home.

Stopped in OFD last Saturday morning on my way to Indiana. Didn't call ahead to reserve an apple fritter and lost the gamble. Waited around for a few batches of donuts to emerge from the fryer, but no fritters were imminent. So I went with what had just come out of the fryer: two French crullers: one with chocolate icing and the other basic glazed. It was the quickest I had ever tried a cruller right out of the fryer and both were stunningly good. The interiors had not yet firmed up and it was like eating deep fried eggy souffles. Can't comment on the calorie count, but the lightness of a fresh cruller almost makes it seem healthier than a regular donut (at least that's what I've convinced myself of). Might be the best non-fritter donuts I've ever had.

Granted I might say the same thing for a Doughnut Vault or Do-Rite donut that had been out of the fryer for less than 5 minutes before consumption, but those places tend not to make their donuts available that quickly from the fryer (30-60 minutes is still not bad). KK is the only other place I've been where you can get a fresh donut that quickly.

The jelly donuts are great as well.
Usually you have to hunt around for the jelly, these are more like a strawberry jelly scoop with a sweet donut shell.
Do not eat one while driving and make sure you have plenty of napkins.
