I've been to Eddie's too. I'll second that recommendation. By all means, avoid the Fish Fry at the VFW Post at Canfield and Higgins. It consists of Mrs. Smith pre-battered filets dropped in a fryer.

My interest in Eddie's in totally peaked. Some questions though. Does it get really packed on Friday's? Can you make reservations, or is it strictly on a first come basis?

    Thanks for the help!

The VFW Hall on 63rd Street and Harlem Ave in Summit, IL does a Friday fish fry year round.

Generally you have the option to sit down in a large banquet style hall, or carry out. The general selections (from memory are) fried perch, fried shrimp, fried catfish, baked scrod and then they have weekly 'specials'. Dining in you get a salad or slaw, baked potato or fries, and bread at the table. There's also a combo plate that includes, shrimp, perch and catfish.

They also serve beer and I think mixed drinks and wine. They offer desserts but they're sort of standard and nothing fantastic.

I took my mom here a week or so ago since she's a big fan of fish fry's and she was pretty thrilled the fish was fresh the portions were pretty large (I want to say that they range from $5-$8 a plate) and the service was fast. It does get pretty packed as the night goes on. They do have a lunch serving, and the dinner serving goes from 4-8pm.

If anyone is really interested in going let me know and I'll dig out a menu for more specifics.

Edited to add: This location is also diagnal from a carry out place called Mr. Shrimp. I haven't been in recently, but the advertise alligator, frog legs, crab legs, and shrimp. If you make it down this far it might be worth a walk in there as well.

Eddie's is basically a tavern that serves food. I tend to go at lunch time , because I work up that way, and have never had a problem getting a table. Dinner may be a different story.

On Wed they do a fish and chicken fry.On Fri they do fish fry only.Full menu still available including a good rare cheeseburger.Eddie's has two big rooms, the old Northwoods bar area and a big addition of a brightly lit non-smoking area.It does get busy but the waitstaff and cooks move at a good pace,so on a Fri expect a wait of less than 10 minutes. They really do have a huge menu-and this is no franchise.Good food, good LI's,and just a good time.Check it out.

I was in Lawry's Tavern on Sat. enjoying the fried chicken and saw that they are doing Fish Frys on Fridays during Lent. They only serve food on Fridays and Saturdays and also for special occasions like corned beef for St. Patricks day etc.

Glad to hear Lawry's is still at it. I lived in the neighborhood 20 yrs ago and Lawry's used to serve up a very decent fried chicken on Wednesday evenings. Is Lawry still behind the bar?

I'll second the rec for the VFW in Summit. It's packed during lent but the food's also better because of the fast turnover. Usually I get the combo plate: 2 kinds of fried fish plus shrimp, fries, slaw.

$5 pitchers of beer. I don't think there's a non-smoking section, and it can get kind of smokey, although it's a huge hall. You sit at long tables and we've always tried to get there early if there's 4 or more people in our party. Last time there was a priest at the end of our table and he hogged all the lemon slices.

    grace

I was also reminded that fried chicken is a 'regular' menu item too. I definately think during Lent it's a good idea to get there early because the place gets filled up pretty fast. I've never made it over for their lunch offering but I'm thinking I might try it on Friday for the heck of it.

Half the fun is the people watching too. There's always something going on in there.

This restaurant is located in the far northwest suburbs, but Villa Bleu Tavern & Restaurant has a very good all-you-can-eat fish fry on Fridays. It has been a long time since I have been there, but I remember it being very good pan fried fish served with french fries and cole slaw. The restaurant gets very crowded and is only open for dinner.

It probably doesn't get more old-fashioned than the VFW.

The Duke of Perth on Clark b/t Belmont and Diversey has, by far, the best fish and chips in the city. And it's a great scottish pub atmosphere with a great selection of british/irish/scottish beers on draught. Wednesday and Friday are all you can eat fish n chips - who can say no to another piece?

For me, fish and chips is not old-fashioned fish fry. I think of the midwestern fish fry as lake perch or walleye or smelt, served with rye bread and onions and coleslaw, and a choice of potato. (I do like Duke of Perth, though!)

I just tried the Elk's Club in Whiting, IN, based on recommendations here. They have a very nice Friday night fish fry from 4-9. I had all-you-can-eat perch. It was a good value and the drinks are ludicrously cheap. It was not quite up to my all-time favorite fish fries, but it was very good. I will go back. They serve the perch sauteed, pan fried, or deep-fried, and it was the deep-fried that best approximated a good old-fashioned Wisconsin fish fry.

A trip to the Elk's in Whiting is also a fun change of pace from Chicago!

From where I live on the South Side this is only a twenty minute trip. It also has the great side-benefit that you can pick up some Bell's beer from the liquor store just down the street from the Elk's lodge. (Bell's no longer being available in IL.)

I visited the Irish American Heritage Center for their fish fry and enjoyed myself even though the food wasn't the high point.

    Image

Slightly mushy fish in a very crisp housing, soft chips, peas from the freezer, cole slaw from the supermarket, plenty of malt vinegar and well-poured Guinness. I thought the atmosphere was great: rambunctious children enjoying some fish to octogenarians having a nip. Live music around the fireplace afterwards was a nice bonus. I'd go back.

I entered the exact same search argument into Google (qualified with Chicago as an out of parentheses argument) and had 5,560 hits. I'm not certain, though, what the relevance of either search is. I doubt that there are only 63 places in the area serving up Friday night fish fry's and I am comfortable believing the real number is considerably less than 5,560.
Objects in mirror appear to be losing.

Out this way, Molly Malone's does a nice job and has the atmosphere and music as well:

The Avenue Alehouse and Poor Phil's also have Friday night fish frys, slightly more commercial in nature, but still in a pleasant environment with decent beer lists (Avenue FINALLY has at least some of the Abitas and Three Floyds, Phil's has been consistently rocking the Belgians, Floyds, Rogues, and Unibroues).
