I did a search and didn't really come up with anything. Will be in Morrison, IL over labor day weekend. Need something within a half and hour drive. Looking for anything really, some friends just bought a place there and have no idea about the area.

Check out Candlelight Inn, They have locations in Sterling and Rock Falls, IL. They're famous for their Chicken George which I must say is quite delicious. Make sure you order it with the Jan's Sauce! Here's their info:

We stopped at the Sterling location on our way to Iowa for Mem. Day camping.
The Chicken George was quite nice (chicken fingers, named after a patron who always ordered his chicken that way). The Jan's Special Sauce is sort of sweet and sour, maybe a honey mustard, but it reminded MrsF of Lao Sze Chuan's Mayonaise Shrimp (in a good way)

JoelF, glad you enjoyed the Chicken George! Having just had LSC's mayo shrimp again this past week, I've always that Jan's sauce was similar to LSC's version for it's shrimp.

I got to spend a few hours in Clinton recently. We didn't make any culinary discoveries but I found the town to be surprisingly interesting. In the mid-to-late 19th century Clinton was Lumber Capitol of the World. It still has an impressive collection of residential and commercial architecture, especially the Van Allen Building (Louis Sullivan, 1914). Originally designed as a department store, it sat vacant for years but has recently reopened as a drug store. The current owners should be commended for a sensitive conversion and for maintaining a small museum devoted to the building's history.

In Clinton I got to try my first Maid-Rite. It was okay but not something I'll crave.

On the way back from Clinton we passed through Sterling IL so of course we stopped by Candlelight to meet Chicken George.

I'm a sucker for dishes with names like that so I was really looking forward to it. There's a lot to like about Candlelight—a family-run, friendly restaurant that takes some care with their food—but I didn't particularly care for Chicken George, basically well-prepared chicken tenders.

    Image

Fans of breaded breast strips would probably go wild over Candlelight's version, almost certainly prepared in house. I hate to say it but I really disliked Jan's sauce, which tasted like mayonnaise, thinned and heavily sweetened. Big splashes of Tabasco helped. Chicken livers are offered as appetizer or entrée. I bet those are really good.

If you're not in the mood for Chicken George, you can always eat his cousin. Charlie swims!

Rene, had I known you were in Sterling I would have joined you! The breast strips are prepared in house daily.

There are quite a few VERY good Retaurants in Clinton. The Candlelight in Clinton along the riverfront is a companion restaurant to the ones in Sterling/Rock Falls. Same Menu. Then there is Rastrelli's in the Northern part of the city ,only a few blocks north of the Lyons /Fulton hiway 136 bridge. Turn right ,go to main ave ,turn left , go 1 1/2 blocks it's on the right. Great restaurant, BEST ITALIAN PIZZA ANYWHERE.

If you like Broasted Chicken, try the Pizza Ranch . It's just off 13th ave north by Medical Associates. Go past Medical Associates to te next stop sign, turn right, just across from the Fareway store. BEST BROASTED CHICKEN I EVER HAD...PRICES-GREAT!!!!!! :D :D :D :D

Cured a case of cabin fever on Sat., and took a quick cruise out to Fulton, IL - right across the river from Clinton, IA. Wanted to check out a place with deep fried tacos, as well as Schafer Fisheries.

Deep fried tacos were at a spot called Mannys Too, bar(healthy and cheap pours) with a walk up counter to order your food. Deep fried tacos @ $1.59/Ea. - Pretty good version, just needed some more seasoning in the beef, some crumbled queso fesco and they would be great.

had the munchies so also had the Combo plate.. taco, enchilada and tostada.

If this spot/bar was in my town, or neighborhood I bet id be popping in for deep fried tacos on occasion.

Also paid a visit to Schafer Fisheries, id seen their retail store on trips heading up to Galena. Been in business since 1955. They are smoking fish here as well, also learned and saw tanks of fish in the back, they also offer frozen fish & seafood.

I was in Fulton this week doing a talk for:

Friends of the Fulton Windmill - Volunteer Millers
    111 10th Ave
    Fulton, IL 61252-1777

This mill is on a flood control dike to the Mississippi River. It can grind a bushel of grain in eight minutes. The mill was prefabricated in Holland, then assembled in Fulton.

I did a talk on pies afterwards one pie served had filling made from their ground corn. It was a first for me, which is always a great gift. I bought a package of ground corn to try it out.

Fulton's restaurants begin to close at seven, 7:30, many at 8 pm, a few at 8:30 and 9 pm with the lone holdout a Chinese takeout until 10 or 11. When I first asked the clerk about where to eat at around 8 pm, I got a convoluted non-response. I later talked to her about this, she said it was hard to respond with so many places closing early.

My talk concluded around 7:30 pm, so I aimed for Manny's Too that closes between 8:30 and 9 pm. They are known for their greasy tacos and greasy pizzas. I asked about Manny's at the event to learn people come from miles away for their tacos and pizza.

Greasy tacos reminded me of Jack in the Box greasy tacos from high school. I ordered two to find they are really close to Jack in the Box with cheese and lettuce pressed into the shell after frying. Manny's managed to be greasier than my earlier experience, my hands were dripping oil. I ordered two, when one would have done the trick.

I ordered a large pizza knowing fully well I would not come close to finishing. I would be getting home the next day in late afternoon, so it could be a quick dinner. When the pizza arrived it was glistening. I was tempted to take napkins and pat off the excess drips. I did not, I tried it as-is. It needed salt or a good shake of parmesan cheese.

Manny's is 45 minutes from Davenport, but there was no Quad cities cut (one slice down the middle and many cuts perpendicular). My pizza was cut party style. The crust was very thin with a nice char on the underside. Toppings of sausage, pepperoni, Canadian bacon, onion, mushroom, green and black olives were all very finely chopped.

I liked this pizza much more after reheating the next day (350 degrees convection on a heated metal plate with pizza arranged on parchment for about 10 minutes). It kept its crisp crust, which is a feature for my family.

I did not visit Clinton, Iowa until the next morning when I needed to feed the car. I certainly would have more food options, though Manny's Too worked out just fine.

Hours vary by location, so check their website: https://www.mannyspizza.com/
