Popular restaurant gives traditional Greek dish a Springfield twist and it's delicious

"A gyro horseshoe ($12.50). Over pita bread was a pile of sliced gyro meat, tomatoes, onions, cheese sauce, tzatziki sauce, and fries. It was a different take on a shoe, one that was quite hearty."

A tip for those traveling thru Abe's home town looking for cheap, convenient and relatively fast eats:

Brickhouse Grill & Pub a little north of I72 on the western part of Veteran's Parkway has half price pizzas on Monday and Tuesday nights. Excellent cracker crust pizza with a variety of toppings. I had a no-sauce cheese/mushroom/ham, Ms. R had a cheese/sauce/black olive/sausage/diced tomato. Both quite crispy with a hint of char on the bottom. I think mine was a little more crackery - another benefit of avoiding sauce. 12" would almost feed 2, especially with a salad or app. We had plenty for doggy bags. Pizza arrived in less than 15 minutes from ordering. And the price: $7 to $8 each pie. Pleasant and helpful service, drink refills before asking.

Last Friday at about 12:45 PM, the parking lot was largely empty. A tentative phone call did reach an employee who was ready to take our order. It appears the dining room is closed, but you can pick up a pizza.

It is state fair season in Springfield, so perhaps this is temporary, but I have a feeling this may be their current business model.

I just called Gabatoni's who remain closed for seated dining, though they do take-out and delivery.

Maybe I will have to bite the bullet to get take-out sometime.

Learned this weekend that Gabatoni's was recently sold. In theory, they will be making the same recipes -- but they will remain drive-through only. Sad -- after more than 70 years.

This article at Gabatoni's might offer hope: https://www.sj-r.com/story/entertainmen ... 372618007/

I met this food writer only once, but her mother I met many times over the years. Her response to the pizza could be a solid report.

Gabatonies in springfield changed owners a few months ago. The pizza is really bad.
