Hi,
I have passed Wally's 'Home of the Great American Road Trip' a number of times on I-55. This is a huge gas station and rest stop featuring over 70 pumps and a number of EV charge stations. It is a mega-station akin the I-80 truck stop in Iowa.
I was there for a pit stop. I parked at the first parking area one encounters, which was a mistake. The distance one walked to reach the bathrooms was substantial. Next time, I will park on the pump side.
I learned the typical gas station makes 1-2 cents (a dollar? a gallon?), so they rely on the food and stuff you may purchase inside for the bulk of their income.
Wally's offers a range of food:
• Carving station
• Gourmet coffee & beverage bar
• Beef jerky bar
• Sweet treats
• Popcorn station
The counter devoted to beef jerky was arranged like a bakery, where you can point and it is packed up. What was not obvious was how much did the jerky cost. I like to see prices and not have to ask. "If you have to ask, can you afford it?" always rattles around my head, so I begin to suppose it can be overpriced.
There is a camper inside with various RV/camping stuff arrayed.
I follow gas prices on gasbuddy. While Wally's is a bright and inviting, their gas prices were not as competitive as I prefer. No indication of price when driving by, which when favorable may often prompt a stop on my side.
I will stop by next time to check it out more when in the area. (Who knows when, I am always on a time crunch.) Now if they had an old fashioned road attraction like a live buffalo, the car would stop promptly. (It's happened, though it has been many years. My Dad was always anti-tourist traps.)
Regards,
Cathy2
