    Cathy,

I assume you are also familiar with Peoria Packing. You have talked a lot about Park Packing. Peoria is much more convenient for me. If you are familiar with Peoria, is it worth it for me to travel to Park over Peoria? I get all the usual suspects with pork ribs and pork bellies the most common purchase.

    Hi,

I have been to both, though its been a few years since I was last at Peoria Packing.

Someone here pointed out Park Packing was grittier. There are body parts at Park Packing, I never saw at Peoria.

I think it is worth a visit at least once, then decide for yourself.

    Regards,

Went to Jewel to pick up cherries, I walked past the Jewel Signature pasta. The price stopped me in my tracks: $1.79 per pound. I am accustomed to paying 99 cents or less depending on whatever is on sale.

I have a specialized price of $.99 for the Signature pasta again. I had the same price a few weeks ago. I bought four packages of WW spaghetti. They used to offer the pasta as a reward, but they have not done that in ages.

Yeah, I used to regularly get a Personalized Price of 50 cents for Signature Select pasta. It was also sometimes a coupon or sale item for that price.
The genuine Italian pasta that all the smaller chains (Butera, Caputo's, Shop n Save, Tonys, Valli, etc) used to sell for 99 cents or sometimes a little less has gone way up. I used to buy a lot of the Granoro 500 gram packages. A little cheaper and made 2 meals for 3 eaters, where a pound was a little skimpy.

Be careful with a lot of the cheap pastas that are out there right now. They might have an Italian sounding name. However, many of them are actually Mexican and Colombian products.

I have had a lot of problems with the Mexican pastas as you need to be sure that you do not overcook or they will fall apart.

They had a segment on coffee today on the third hour of the Today show. They said that coffee has gone up 20% since the pandemic started. I buy the half caff coffee when it is on sale, and I used to be able to get it for $3.99 a can, but now it is rare that I can get it for less than $7.99 for a large can of Folger's, Maxwell House or Hills Brothers. I did get a bag of Signature Select half caff for free recently, because I had a J4U reward for it.

On CNN yesterday, they mentioned that the price of food has gone up 13.1% in the last year. It seems like I am paying way more than that. They said that milk, and eggs have gone up 20%, and that people are buying less steak and other more expensive cuts of meat, and buying more chicken. The cheapest I have seen for a dozen large eggs lately is $3.29, and it is currently $3.69 at Aldi's. Milk is $3.25 at Aldi's, and is $2.99-$3.49 at Jewel. It was on sale last week at Mariano's though. Last time I was in Walmart, I think milk was over $3.00 a gallon.

I've also tried Italian-sounding pastas that turned out to be from Turkey. I'd rate them as "ok" but a little mushy.

The Mexican pastas seem to be made with something other than durum wheat.

You have to make sure that you do NOT go past "el dente" as they start to go to mush almost immediately. I had some of the macaroni that I had intended to go to macaroni salad do just that and I hid it in macaroni and cheese.

Yet another shocker on a basic food: Walmart's in-store-baked French Bread is now $1.47. As recently as June it was $1.
I think the substitution effect has the price of low-end foods going up the most, while higher-end foods have not risen as much. It's hard to move downward from a once-$1 loaf of bread, carton of eggs or bag of noodles, while it's easy to substitute downward from a bag of shrimp or piece of skirt steak or fancy cheese.
In many cases these budget friendly foods use a lot of wheat and other grains, too, so I suppose the grain shortage has not helped.

Funny, for me, usually I've been finding skirt steak prices tremendously inflated ($8 or $9 has become $12-14), but shrimp at the Asian markets can still be found when on sale for $6-8.

If you cook the Mexican macaroni even slightly past el dente, MOST of the shells will fall apart and you might as well throw them away. I would not recommend it for macaroni salad.

The name of the brand is Pagasa.

I have occasionally cooked from community cookbooks from 1911 and 1925. It was not unusual to encounter macaroni recipes calling for a 30-minute boil. I decided to give it a try. I brought the macaroni to a boil, set the timer for 30-minutes and walked away. I knew if I did not, I would want to stop the cooking process earlier. I was not going to allow macaroni-interuptus!

The result was overcooked, bloated macaroni, but they were intact and did not break apart. I went on to complete the recipe for an early macaroni and cheese that was quite acceptable.

What I believe happened was when the macaroni reached saturation, it stopped expanding. I probably could have cooked these longer and would have had the same result.

I just realized this afternoon that I had purchased 2# of Doria Spaghetti which is made in Columbia. On the packaging, it stated that the spaghetti was made from hard durum wheat. Looking back, I spend $0.79/ lb.

It turned out quite well. That product is one that I would recommend.

The 1/2 gallon milk $1.29 digital deal at Mariano’s is what I usually purchase. Since I live alone, I would never be able to use the 2 gallons for $5 or $6 deals before they went bad. In the past, they have offered the $1.29 digital deal every third week. If they stay true to form, the deal should be offered the week of Wednesday, August 24th through Tuesday, August 30th.

I've switched most of my beef consumption to sirloin tip roast. I usually get it for $3.49/lb at Sam's Club. It's a pretty versatile cut. You can cut it into steaks, cube it for shish kebab or slice it thinly for stir fry.

I don't live close enough to a Mariano's store tp make it worth my while to get the $1.29 milk, but I go through a gallon of milk a week, and I have been getting the personalized price of $2.93 for a gallon of milk on my J4U lately. I Mostly shop at the Chicago Avenue Jewel in Evanston, or the store on Green Bay in Wilmette. Milk at the Chicago Ave store is always $2.99 or 2/$5, and I only save six cents when I buy my milk there, but if I buy my milk at the Green Bay store, milk is always $3.49, or 2/$6, and so I save $.56 if I buy my milk there. Right now Jewel has all of their Kemp products 20% off, but I checked to see how much their milk is at Jewel, and it is $5 a gallon, and so it is still $4 a gallon on sale.

I've noticed that ever the Chicago Ave. store has started charging $.69 a pound for bananas. Bananas are currently $.48 a pound at Aldi's, and they are $.59 a pound at Whole Foods.

Butera has Certified Angus untrimmed inner skirt for $6.99/lb this week. I'm pretty sure Tony's had similar recently. I think I also saw the Mexican beef Tbones for $3.99 a few weeks ago. I successfully substituted down, though, by ramming my freezer full of the $1 half pound pub burgers from Jewel.

Tony's skirt has been 6.99 for 2 weeks running.
You don't wanna know how many pork tenderloins I've stuffed into my freezer from Jewel this week. I kinda have the feeling pork prices are gonna be low for a little while because of the Swift plant closures, and then perhaps a skyrocket in prices? Total guess. I truly don't know the whole story. Chicken prices have come down too. 99c/lb for whole fryers at my lil fruit mkt, and also, my Costco (which scarcely had their whole fryers for a few weeks) had "$5.00" off for any of their 2 packs, which brought most of them down to 99c/lb. The freezer is STUFFED. Prepped for some possibly lean months ahead.
