Once upon a time, you could change your designated store to the one with the better price. If there was a coupon associated with it you clipped it, then go to your regular store and this coupon would work. There was a website that highlighted this and eventually Jewel closed this loophole.

Hi- I just looked at the Chicago Ave. store ad, and the cheese is on the first page. Maybe I missed it yesterday. I usually either go to the Chicago Ave. store, which is the closest one to my condo, or I go to the Wilmette Green Bay store, which I go to after I work in my community garden on McCormick. The Wilmette store has better produce, and has a few things that the Chicago Ave. store does not have such as the Tabatchnick frozen soup, but their milk is $3.49 a gallon, and it is $2.99 at the Chicago Ave store. I often have a personalized deal for milk for $2.84, and both stores honor it.

The deal with the 10% coupon is that I went to the Chicago Ave. store to get my shot on Monday, and I was going to use the coupon there, but they did not have one of the things I wanted, and I was going to go to Sam's Club and Mariano's anyway, and so I stopped at the Kosher Jewel on Howard last. When the front end manager looked at the coupon, I think he thought that you handled it like an app, and he said I had to go home and scan it myself to my account. I don't know when I will spend $40 again at Jewel. You can't include liquid dairy or taxes in the $40. At least I got two rewards for buying $61, and my birthday is in two days, and so I got double points. Right now I have three rewards, and by the end of the month, I should have another one.

Got the .99 giant blueberries yesterday. Not very blueberry-like, almost more like grapes, but a fun change from the usual fall fruits. They scared the other household member; called them "freaky."

    LOL -
I totally had to get those blueberries, too. I had no intention (didn't clip the coupon beforehand,) but as soon as I saw them, I absolutely HAD to. Those things are comically massive. Mostly sweet, very little flavor, but they are still good. Hopefully they won't ruin anyone's steroid or growth hormone testing.

And on a non-food-related topic, Signature Select AA and AAA batteries are $5/2dozen. Anybody tried them? It's a good deal if they are usable batteries.
I was going to comment on this. I would have posted this response from Community Tavern, but it still will not let my 2.4G laptop logon to a network.
Yes, I was amazed by this pricing. When out-&-about in the 1987 Sprint Wednesday, a check of the flashlight in the glove compartment turned up dim. It takes AA batteries. We have finally run out of the batteries ordered by my dad [R.I.P.], so I checked on-line sources for AA batteries.
The Jewel-Osco price appeared. I was unsure if this was a typo. So I went out to that Jewel @ 4660 W. Irving Park. (I was heading outside today anyway. After today, with temperatures predicted to plummet - no, not any more.) :(
It is $5.00. Ohmigawd. I was expecting to have to pay $1.25 for four alkaline AA batteries at Dollar-and-a-quarter Tree or Family Dollar.
I bought 48. This should last for years.
I am amazed this was not mentioned in the Jewel-Osco ad. Go there now and buy them. How many Xmas devices will command AA batteries? Quit worrying about it.

Hi- I broke down and bought two pints of the blueberries on Monday, and I think I will pass next time. Like somebody said they are not very blueberry. The blueberries I get at the farmer's market are way better. The ones from Peru have a different texture that I don't care for. I would rather eat stuff that is in season, such as oranges or apples. The $.99 blueberries that they have on sale starting tomorrow, are only the 6 ounce ones. Right now I still have some pears, apples and plums from the farmer's market, and I finally cut open a pineapple I got on sale at Jewel a few weeks ago, and I got a bag of clementines I got at Aldi's on Saturday, and so I did not even need the blueberries.

I spent $18 at Jewel on Monday, and I saved 66%. I got the two pints of blueberries, a free loaf of bread, a gallon of milk, five packages of cheese, and a carton of Breyer's ice cream. Since my birthday was last week, I also got double J4U points.

BYW- I was at the Green Bay Wilmette store, and I checked to see how much lettuce was. Head lettuce was $2.49, and they had some sick looking organic leaf lettuce for $2.49 a pound. When I was at Aldi's on Saturday, they were out of head lettuce. They had packages of Boston lettuce for $1.99 a package, but they were out of leaf lettuce and romaine. I just ordered some local lettuce from Henry Brockman that I am going to pick up on Saturday at the pre Thanksgiving market at Immanuel Lutheran church in Evanston/ All of his lettuce is organic and is fantastic. I am also getting some spinach from him, and lots of root vegetables.

Hi- For the whole month of November, I always get double J4U points, because it is my birthday. A friend of mine also has a birthday in November, and she does not remember getting an email about her birthday reward. I told her to check her email on 11/1, and she should see an email from Jewel about her birthday reward. I asked her if she got double points, and she claimed that she only got five bonus points. I though everybody got double points for their birthday. What does everybody else get?

Not my birthday, but I got a random $5 off a $5 purchase, and a $1 off any produce purchase this week. And I got a rain check for more blueberries. Yet another "cheaty" strategy at Jewel: You can get a rain check for out of stock coupon items even if you don't have the coupon activated. Probably shouldn't have revealed this hack...

You have to go to J4U and then click on your account in the upper right hand corner, and enter in your birthday. I think that is why my friend did not get any good offers for her birthday such as double points. Jewel says your birthday present is worth up to $10. You are supposed to get an email from Jewel once a month for a free item. I just got one for a free loaf of Angelica bread that was worth $5.95.

Jewel had plenty of the blueberries on the shelf when I got there Monday. I ended up getting two pints of them, and I was underwhelmed. I would rather have local blueberries and skip them the rest of the year, or have frozen. There is somebody that comes to the winter farmers market in Evanston, that brings frozen Michigan blueberries that are supposed to be wonderful. I have never bought them though, They are not cheap.

Those are some great sale prices, Artie; thank you for posting them. I am looking forward to checking out next weekend whether I can actually find them (especially the pistachios, oranges, HRI pizzas, and Nestle chips). I'm a bit skeptical, though; I don't know how many times in the past year or so I've gone looking for an item advertised in the weekly flyer at one of the two Jewel stores near me and found the item sold out at the sale price, stocked at a non-sale price, or not stocked at all. I don't know whether that's because of the current inflation in food prices everywhere, the announced/possible merger, or just poor management of these two local stores.

If the sale items at Jewel are sold out, you can usually ask for a rain check. If you get charged the regular price instead of the sale price, you can go to customer service, and point out the sale price in the ad, and ask them to refund the difference. There is nothing in the sale that starts on 11/25 that I am interested in other than maybe the oranges and some of the Christmas stuff. I wonder if they would have the poinsettia plants 50% off?

FYI - My personalized coupons expired on schedule at Tuesday midnight.

The Jewel sales and related coupons expire Thursday, but always check.

Green onions are presently $1.50 a bunch. My expired personalized price was 88 cents. I caught it by doing a quick review before checking out. I will be near Jerry's later today and can pick it up there.

It wasn't as bad as you think. I did get a bonus of 75 cent containers of roasted garlic hummus that became a light dinner with radishes and celery.

I talked to the Jewel HP manager today about shopping behavior. He indicated since a defrosting a turkey was a top priority, people came earlier in the week to buy their birds. People who came the day before Thanksgiving were mostly picking up odds and ends to finish side dishes, but not likely for the main course.

I told him about cooking a turkey directly from frozen state to the oven. He wanted to know where I learned about this. I told him, though I have done it enough to find it a reliable cooking method. I think I will bring a print out of the process next time.

Hi Cathy- I was at Jewel, Whole Foods and Mariano's tonight, and Jewel had green onions 2/$3, but they had organic green onions for $1.29. Whole Foods had organic green onions for $1.29, and conventional ones for $.89. Mariano's had conventional ones for $.99, and organic ones for $1.29. Aldi's did have the cheapest green onions last time I was there. You got a big bag of green onions for $.89.

Jewel was out of head lettuce, but Whole Foods had it for $2.49, and Mariano's had it for $1.99. I got Cedar's hummus on sale for 2/$4 tonight at Jewel.

All the stores I visited tonight had lots of turkeys left. I ended up buying a package of turkey drumsticks at Mariano's, and no they were not smoked, but it was almost 9:00 when I left Jewel, and Valli closed at 9:00, and neither Jewel or Whole Foods had turkey drumstick.

I finally used my 10% off vax coupon tonight, and saved $5.80. The cashier hassled me about it, but I said I was told that you just have to scan it, and she tried, and it did not work out. Another cashier gave her another glossy vax coupon that worked. My coupon was just on a regular piece of paper. They probably gave me the wrong thing at the pharmacy.

    Nancy,

The pricing of green onions lately is mystifying, isn't it?

Aldi's green onion pricing relatively to quantity is good, but green onions are not always reliably there.

    Happy Thanksgiving!
