It's been about a year since my quest for rainbows began, just curious if anybody has seen them around chicago recently?

Anybody know where I can buy rainbow cookies in Chicago?

I haven't been this year, but I would bet you could find them, again, at Hungarian Kosher (see info upthread). Passover starts tonight, so see if they are open tomorrow (Sunday 20 April). Call perhaps, before you go. I have heard them called Venetians, also, though I don't know if that's what they are called if they are the KFP version.

Anyone from New York must laugh at the struggle to find these in Chicago. I almost wonder if you can call yourself a bakery in NY if you don't sell rainbow cookies and black & whites. In any event, yesterday while picking up paczki at Delightful Pastries, I noticed rainbow cookies and had one. Now I'll say it was unlike the ones I'm used to from NY . . . it didn't have that noticeable almond flavor. That being said, the texture of the cake was wonderful and I enjoyed the flavor. So for the shopper looking for the typical NY version, this might not necessarily fit the bill. Otherwise, a very good cookie.

After doing my regularly scheduled bimonthly google search for "chicago rainbow cookies", I stumbled across this:

    http://blogs.menupages.com/chicago/2008 ... ow_co.html

I found the rainbows at D'Amatos...
They are rather disappointing, dry cake layers, only chocolate on topside, no hint of almond paste, seems like they used almond extract instead...
They don't bake them in-house, but instead order them from a baker...
    Oh well...

    Has anybody tried Ferrara's recently?

I found boxes of kosher for passover rainbow cookies at the Jewel on Howard for $1 a box. Can't vouch for flavor yet, but hey, they're a buck!

I just saw black and white cookies at Baci downtown on Clark and Jackson. They are large and cake like and sealed in cellophane. I tried one once and it was good for what it was. Don't see the magic of them personally but I'm from Chicago.

Black and whites also at Lou Mitchell's on Jackson. Good find for a sad NY-er..

I've also tried the rainbows from D'Amatos and was also disappointed. Great bread, though, so I'll take it.

They were quite delicious...but man, those cannolis were the real stars of the show. The macaroons, on the other hand...meh.

I'm betting they had real almond paste and chocolate, then, instead of almond flavor and chocolate-colored coating. Which is what was in the ones I got from the Jewel.

Still, the crap cookies I got inspired me to make a marzipan-fruit cake, which was lovely, and also a lot easier than the posted rainbow cookie recipe.

Rainbow cookies were available today at GNR nominee Delightful Pastries. Three layers: green, pink, yellow with raspberry filling between one set of layers and apricot filling between the other layers, covered in dark chocolate. In terms of appearance, they look very much like those in the photo that was linked in the original post. The one I tasted was very good. The cookie layers were fresh and soft. From reading the original post, my impression is the rainbow cookie layers are traditionally almond flavored. In the Delightful Pastries' version, the raspberry and chocolate flavors dominated, more so than almond, but my overall sense was that it was a tasty combination of flavors. I don't recall having seen these before, so Rainbow Cookies may not be a regular item. If you want to make sure they are on hand, it would probably be best to call ahead, or PM the owner who posts here as Cookie Monster.

I've seen them there on at least a few visits this year, the first time during a February visit (although it could be that I just never noticed them on prior visits), as I remarked here.

As adventurous I am in my baking endeavors, I don't think I'd ever have the patience or time to make something like this. Does anyone know where, in the Chicago area, I might be able to find one of these spectacular desserts?

Stumbled upon this thread earlier this week, read through and decided I had to try making these cookies. Never had them before so didn't know what they were SUPPOSED to taste like. I used a recipe from epicurious and other than my layers not being identical (green a little thicker than the others) I thought I did an ok job. I had decided to proceed because an italian friend was having surgery and he missed these from NJ.

So off they went. Then on Thursday I happened to stop in at GNR Il Mulino/Maria's bakery in Highwood. It was mobbed with people picking up christmas orders but walk-ins were taken really quickly and i picked up a bunch of goodies. Then I noticed the 3-layer rainbows and HAD to try one...just so i could gauge how mine turned out.

When I got home I emailed my friend and told him not to eat what i sent. These ones from the bakery were outstanding....much more moist than mine (more jam between the layers for sure) but the cakey layers were just really tasty and sweet.

Just figured I had to share the story, if the OP happens to be up on the north shore any time, may be worth a stop in at Maria's. FWIW, I love her frosted fig cookies.

Redemption!! Had brunch at Winberie's today in Buffalo Grove, rainbow cookies on the buffet, had to try again. Good news: Mine kicked their ass!! These were dry and tasteless with some sort of cream between the layers, not jam.

I'm pretty sure I've never had rainbow cookies, unfortunately. This discussion was the first thing that came to mind though when I saw this post about artist-themed desserts at the cafe at the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco. A rainbow cake of sorts:
