I have a friend that buys the garlic all the time and loves it. She also likes the crushed ginger. I don't think she enjoys the work it takes to crush fresh garlic. I use a garlic press that I have had for over 20 years, and I love it. I could understand if all I had was a cheap garlic press, I would hate to crush garlic. At least the crushed garlic does not come from China. It comes from another country, but I forget where.

Has anybody been to Jewel today? Are they limiting the number of customers to 50% capacity? I heard the state was going to make the stores do that starting today 11/16? The last time I went there was Friday evening, and other than the night crew, I practically had the store to myself at 10:00 pm. The only bad thing was that they were low on toilet paper.

No issues this morning at the Highland Park Jewel. No capacity warnings or enforcement. Business as usual. Plenty of toilet paper.

Hi- I had a doctor's appointment at St. Francis this afternoon, and so after I was done I went to the Jewel on Howard right by the L. I only go there maybe twice a year, and I had not been to that store since the pandemic started. First thing I noticed was that they were not limiting customers to 50% of capacity. The only Jewel I have seen do that is the one on Chicago Avenue. Trader Joe's has the best Covid prevention plan. The store was a little busier than I would have liked. I got there around 3:30. People were not social distancing either. While I was waiting in line for the self checkout, another person cut in front of me.
I usually go shopping at Jewel late in the evening where I practically have the store to myself.

The other beef I have about the store is that the store is in Chicago proper, and this is the first time I have been in a Chicago grocery store since the pandemic started. Every other time I have been to this store, I have brought my own bags, but the governor now does not allow people to bring their own bags. I had exactly 15 items, and so I just met the requirement for the self checkout. They only had two regular lines open and one express. When I got done ringing up for purchases, I hit the pay button. It then asked me how many bags of theirs I used. I said 4, and so I got charged $.28 for the bags. What do other people in Chicago do. Do you just pay the bag charge? I know Aldi charges you for using their bags, but you currently are not allowed to bring your own bags into the store. I am told that people get around that by keeping their bags in their car, and just taking the cart full of groceries out to their car to bag them.

When the pandemic first started, I would go to the Chicago Avenue Jewel, and I would use the self checkout, and get away with using my own bags, even though I was not supposed to. One of the employees then caught me doing that once, and told me I was not supposed to do that, and so I quit doing it. Thanks, Nancy

ALDI in the suburbs doesn’t enforce the personal bag rule. I bring mine in all the time.

Jewel in the suburbs let you bring your own bags. However, you have to do your own bagging, even in the regular checkout.

I bring and use my own bags. You just have to keep them in the cart and not place them on the checkout/register strip. This is speaking from the Wilmette Jewel and Fresh Farms on Touhy, 95% of the time. Because Wilmette doesn't have that plastic bag fee, there's no prompt on the self-checkout (which was a really nice improvement of the location).

It's an item I've never considered buying, but could make for good casual weekend breakfast with a fried egg.

Sorry I missed this. I'm not much of an oatmeal eater, but with cheese and jalapeños, I'd definitely consider it. May even just go and buy it.

Maybe you got entered in the Voss sweepstakes by just purchasing it at Jewel. When Dominick's and Jewel used to have store drawings, I would always fill out the entry. I won more at Dominick's than I did at Jewel because they had more drawings. I won an exercise bike, a CD player, a clothes dryer, a kid's bike and something else that I forget at Dominick's. At Jewel I won the same exercise bike and a Sound of Music video. They have not had any drawings at Jewel or Dominick's in years though.

They are also a staple of the "Market Day" school food sales. When the kids were small, a selection of these, mozzarella sticks, chicken fingers and a couple of other industrial appetizer packages were opened and spread on a cookie sheet on lazy dinner nights. It's funny how, with the kids out of the house, and the payoff of cooking lower, we cook more from scratch than we ever did.

For anybody that lives near Fox Lake, somebody just posted on a Facebook group that I belong to that her husband just came home from the Fox Lake Jewel, and they had a 20 pounds for $20 deal on meat. She does not know if the deal is only for this particular Jewel or not. Her husband is a professionally trained chef, and he was very excited when he came home with his deal. Hope this helps, Nancy
