Just picked up a pound of ground venison at Jewel. It was on sale for $6.99, but I grabbed a package that was just about to outdate that carried the "manager's special -- take another 30% off" sticker. So pretty good price for a tasty meat. Straight into the freezer, as it outdate tomorrow -- but worth keeping an eye on the exotic stuff, as it often remains on hand right up to the sell-by date.

Artie already posted some of these, but highlights from the Wednesday preview with added bonus snarky commentary:
    99 cent stuff:
8 oz pub burgers - last time these were nice 85/15 burger. Hunt carefully and you might find some that are abnormally large, although portion control this year is much tighter than last. Limit 8 per visit.
Mushrooms - hope they actually have some, typically sold out early in the week
Pork loin - does not say Hormel Always Tender, so this may actually be genuine no-solution-added pork. At 17-22 lb, these truly qualify as elephant trunks.

    99 cent coupons:
Pillsbury Soft Baked cookies - I tried these when they were free. Bad, bad, bad. Fakey flavor and overly soft texture. If you like that sort of thing, chewy Chips Ahoy or bakery.
2 liters and bread - both these items have gone up shockingly, so stock up if you like 'em. Despite the advice to use a good country style loaf found in most magazines, cheap white bread makes a pretty good panade, better than dry breadcrumbs if you ask me.

A few winners on cereal and pop tarts in the later pages. And the mystery of the week: 4-packs of 4 oz junior pub burgers for $5. Would anyone really pay an extra $3.02 to avoid cutting the 99 cent burgers in half?

At the Jewel in Lake Forest a few years ago, I saw these Pub Burgers on sale though individually weighed and priced. I inquired with the butcher who advised some were underweight.

I bet someone complained and that was their response.

I will weigh them, if I think they are underweight. Usually, they are a tad over weight.

I'm really loving these store that allow the previews. I can hedge with a Tuesday shopping trip if needed. PSA: A lot of stores had blueberry pints for 2 bucks this past week. Normally, I look at blueberry pints in season when they are under 2 bucks, but these recent blueberries are crazy. Sugar sweet, and big as grapes. I'm gonna hit Jewel today for more blueberries, and Polar sparkling water. Depending on my gut feeling, I might buy blueberries for freezing. They are that good. We had a bumper crop of a season of wild blueberries in da U.P. this year, so we have ample amounts of frozen wild ones (which are still better than those at Jewel / Tony's,) but the ones at these stores are still good enough for everyday eating from the freezer over the winter months ahead.

I'm already planning out my mushroom stuffing: Bulk Italian snausage, cream cheese, mozz and cheddar is thawing, and Tony's has the shredded parm on sale. Spinach will come from Aldi. I should be able to hit Jewel and Tony's before 7am tomorrow to make sure I get what I need while it's available. I missed out on 99c shrooms a few months ago after waiting until late in the day. Lesson learned after the next 99c sale had stacks and stacks of them at 8am.

I'll also be eyeballing the bogo frozen onion rings, and bogo Impossible products at Jewel. If the price is right on the Impossible snausages, I might give them a try.

For some unknown reason,Indiana requires that meat must be sold by the pound rather than by the item such as the .99 pub burgers. This is now the second time in a row that Indiana stores are not offering the pub burgers. Grrr! Instead they have chicken thighs & drums for .99 and instead of the tamales and egg rolls they are offering eggs for .99 Limit 2. It's Illinois for me this week.

Elaborating on the pub burger weights: In bygone years at multiple Jewels, these seemed to be hand cut from giant chubs of burger. Often the top and bottom were not parallel. It was relatively easy to spot obviously thicker ones, although the ideal was to find packages with all thick ones. I used to weigh them as I put together approximately 1.5 or 2 lb packs to freeze. The largest packs of 4 burgers weighed about 20 oz.

This year, they are far more uniform and parallel as though cut by a machine. A benefit, I suppose, for those who cook as is. The rounded ends of the chubs lead to smaller patties; watch out for those.

I should have heeded my own advice about Jewel BOGO.

    Sep 21-27
Signature Select Frozen Onion Rings: 3.79 BOGO

    Sep 28 - Oct 4
Signature Select Frozen Onion Rings: 99c Limit 4

I know they are prolly gonna be trash, but I was so happy I scored the last 2 of the BOGO bags on the shelf last week.

    ===
For the $12.99 crab legs - I seem to recall in previous years, when they had super cheap King legs, a lot of people were commenting that they looked anemic, like medium sized Snow Crab legs.

For the B1G2 pork tenderloins, I'll be eyeballing the price on my weekly shopping trip. I'm wondering if that'll be better than the $1.99/lb stock up I did a few weeks ago. Freezer is packed with them things.

Nothing else too exciting this week except for the 1.66 GM cereal, and 99c Crest Toothpaste for me this week.

Notable: $7.99/lb for catfish filet just doesn't seem right, especially if the ad is also displaying salmon filet for the same price. We're not in Kansas anymore.

My pork tenderloin and frozen onion ring recon...

Yesterday, pork tenderloin was $7.99 lb at my nearby store.
Today, their website shows that if I order it for pickup, it's $6.99/lb, buy one get two free. I stocked my freezer with it a few weeks ago for $1.99/lb.

I made a pkg of the Signature Select brand frozen onion rings. They are what they are...trash. Burger King style breaded rings of some kind of paste that's sposed to be onion-ish? Probably not a viable source of good nutrition, but the overall lack of goodness in a junk food way isn't really there either. If I'm gonna have onion rings, they're at least gonna be good. I think I've decided to not buy any more at this week's 99c price tag. I think I'm better off just buying "a sack" of onion rings from White Castle if I need a fix.

I was at the Jewel on Green Bay in Wilmette tonight, and they had a ton of salad dressing on clearance, and the majority of it was 75% off. They also had Brownberry bread for $3.49, and I had a personalized price of $3.33 for Edy's ice cream. The salad dressing was mixed in with the regularly priced salad dressing.

I was going to buy a gallon of milk, but I did not get a personalized price on milk this week, and milk at that store was $3.49 a gallon. They did have Kemp's milk on sale for $4.49, and I had a coupon for $1 off on J4U, and so I was tempted, but I did not absolutely need milk. They had their McCormick spices 33% off, and I had a $1 off on any McCormick spice, and so I got a bottle of curry powder for $3.49.

The frozen Tabatchnick soup is still on sale B1G1F through 10/18. I love their soup.

I did shop at Jewel-Osco on Monday. I had hours remnant from a one-day Ventra pass. It was the store @ 4660 W. Irving Park Rd. On the route #54 Cicero bus, the closest stop is at Belle Plaine Ave., and walk the one-block east through the parking lot of the being demolished Sears store.
The most difficult element of this trip was locating the JJ's pies. They were not in any aisle. :?: They were at end points near aisle 6. The pies are baked by JTM Foods, LLC. in Erie, PA. It would not be jolting if it was the bakery that makes the apple and cherry pies sold at Aldi. However, its selection at Jewel-Osco is more varied. It also bakes chocolate, strawberry and cream, and Boston cream (vanilla & chocolate). So I wound up buying sixteen of them [4 apple, 6 cherry, 2 each of the other three].
There was a variety of Michelina's entrees. Impressively, it did not have any spicy chicken alfredo entrees.
I bring re-used plastic bags from other stores (& carry-out restaurants) when I shop in the city. I know I can fit eight Michelina's entrees in one bag. I bought sixteen. Besides the re-used plastic bags, I have a fiber laminated paper bag from a previous American Homebrewers' Association national homebrew conference. I was able to fit the bags with the entrees and the pies into that larger bag. I then haul it up on one shoulder to walk back to the bus stop. My tab at Jewel-Osco was $29.00.

Scored my big ass 8 lb eye of round @ $1.99lb.
Also the 99c b/s Flintstone chicken breastesses.

Makin beef jerky on the smoker tomorrow. I laughed at the lil fruit mkt down the street. I use the cheap 99c "Steak Seasoning" for jerky - yes , we've all seen those 99c plastic spice jars, you know the ones I'm talking about. It's $2.19 today.

I was at Jewel tonight, and I got the 16 roll package of Angle Soft TP. It is normally 15.99, but it was on sale for $12.99, and there was a $2 J4U, and so $10.99. When I checked out, I had both a $2 J4U coupon for it, and a $3 one, and it used both of them, and so my TP only cost me $7.99 plus tax.

Jewel also had packages of Jewel chicken sausage B1G1F in the meat department. I considered getting two packages of them. It would have been $7.49, but then I could not find any cheap buns, and I was concerned if I could eat them up in time. They expired on 11/13. If I would have bought them, I would have frozen one of the packages. Right now though , my freezer is maxed out, and so it is just as well I did not buy them. I got the free waffles, and plus I had a personalized price of $3.11 on Healthy Choice dinners, and so I bought two of them.

JJewel has had lots of stuff on clearance for 75% off lately. They had lots of salad dressing, and some WW pasta, as well as marinade and BBQ sauce. At the Jewel Chicago Avew. store, the clearance is in the seasonal aisle, and next to the milk. Jewel has Bob's Red Mill 33% off right now too. Hope this helps, Nancy
