My favorite is when they have “Buy one, get two free” baby back ribs for $9.99 lb - when every other store has them on sale for $2.99 lb no strings…

And that's on top of the fact that all their pork is "enhanced", in other words 1/8th of it is salt water.

In my neck of the woods, Jewel tends to offer the best, most consistent quality on produce. Selection is middling, though. They also have the best pricing on dry groceries (middle of the store aisles). Where they really fall off is on meat, poultry, fish and seafood. Those are so low-grade, I can't even consider buying them there.

I bought some Amy Lu chicken sausage, which is on sale for $3.99 currently at Jewel. Normally I don't buy very much meat at Jewel other than the chicken sausage. I do buy some frozen seafood occasionally, and I got some frozen scallops for free there a few months ago. I need to use them up. The Plaza Del Lago Jewel had some seafood on clearance a few months ago. I got some packages of Gulf coast frozen shrimp for 75% off. I don't buy a lot of meat, but I buy most of my chicken and turkey at whole foods.

Amen to this! I get so excited when I see cheap pork in the ad only to look at the fine print "Hormel Always Tender".

Tell ya what...ten years ago I would have been the first one to trash Jewel, BUT, once you understand their games, you can do pretty well.
B1G2 baby backs at $9.99 lb is a joke
BOGO - they usually MORE than double the price
Their fish will be 5.99/lb one week, then 4.99 for a 6oz portion another week.

And, there's more examples all the time.

BUT, if you read between the ads and whatnot week to week, you'll know when to pounce on the great prices. Usually every week they have something worth stopping in for. Once every few weeks they have something to stock up on. A few weeks ago they had Bone in Choice Rib Roasts for 5.99/lb. Most of the conventional stores put it on sale right around the Dec Holiday season. I have a freezer full of them. Actually just pulled a 6 pounder off the smoker at 130 degrees. I'll slice it into 4 steaks just before dinner, kiss them on the 800 degree gas grill for a sec, and have a ribeye dinner for the fam on the cheap. Is it the bestest ribeye on the planet? No. But, for 5.99/lb, I'd suggest that it is easily in the conversation of best for price, unless we start in on the method of raising. I'm guessing it's as conventional, mass produced, as can be.

A funny thing that I noticed about their rib roasts this year… For Thanksgiving, they had USDA Choice bone in roasts for $5.99 per pound - I bought a 9 pounder and I divvied it up into steaks, vacuum sealed them and froze… For Christmas, they had rib roasts for $5.99 per pound but they were ungraded poorly marbled Canadian imports - Went to Mariano’s, spent $6.99 per pound and got decent USDA Angus Choice instead.

The sale week before the Christmas sales, Jewel offered rib roasts for $6.99 per pound.

I bought a rib roast around Easter for use at Christmas at $5.99 per pound. I did not buy any rib roasts during the holidays.

I appreciate the way you run down the sales at the Jewels, JohnKWilson. I tend to avoid Jewel, but your clear list makes it easy to ponder whether I should make the extra stop.

Has anybody here that belongs to J4U had their points stolen? I think it is mostly people who belong to Fresh Pass, where you are allowed to carry over your points that get hit with this. They decide to use some of their points, and they discover somebody in California has already helped themselves to the points. Albertsons is working on this, but they have not found a solution yet. If you find out you have been hit, you can contact CS, and ask for your points back.

At self-check in Jewel-Waukegan, a man bought some stuff that required a digital coupon. He wanted to know if he could use my account, but I did not clip that code. I told him to ask the store for the coupon price. The clerk for that area immediately granted him the code-related price.

I made a point of thanking the clerk who took care of that without any fuss.
