When it's in season, and you do the correct checks, you'll have a great chance at getting a good one. We're at the end of the season. I'm definitely gonna go get one for 1.99, but I've already bought 2 from other stores (Tony's, I think,) over the past 2 weeks that have displayed that "end of season" characteristic of being sweet, but a little bit mushy. Flavor was still there, but crispness was not. Jr. is using half of the newest one to make smoothies because the texture isn't great for eating. I'll probably buy one from Jewel today or tomorrow and test. Fingers are crossed, but this is what happens at the end of the season.

I purée the mushy ones from my garden and freeze the juice in the big silicone ice cube trays then throw them in a ziploc—nice to have a little reminder of summer in a few months :)

Hi- This Jewel Deals with Barb Facebook group that I belong to just posted the Jewel ad starting 9/27, and they have Mulan tofu for $.49 limit 2. I assume this is just a J4U deal. They also have bananas for $.49. I buy the sealed tofu in the boxes that keep forever, and so I will pass on this, but people that eat more tofu than I do might be interested in this. Hope this helps, Nancy

I bought 2 of the 1.99 watermelons. First one is decently sweet, the meat away from the heart is still good n crunchy. A tiny bit on the late summer mushy side in the middle, but still totally acceptable for eating straight. The second one will get cracked open tomorrow probably.

Don't know if this is universal, or if it's because my Jewel (440 E. Rand Rd., Arlington Heights) just redecorated, but last weekend, they had a lot of free samples.

The one item worth mentioning in particular, for me anyway, was the new Nature Valley SAVORY crunch bars. I've always hoped that someday, someone would come up with a savory energy bar -- something one can toss in one's bag while on the road. At last, there is. I tried both the BBQ and the white cheddar. Preferred and bought the BBQ, though also liked the cheddar. Looked it up, and Nature Valley (but not Jewel, at least not yet) also have "everything bagel" flavored. Not going to replace real food, but if you need easy, portable food but don't always want it to be sweet, this offers a new option.

Hi- On the Jewel Deals with Barb Facebook page I am a member of, they posted a few days ago about a deal at Jewel, where if you buy $50 of one of their gift cards, when you check out you get a coupon for $10 off your next shopping trip, and so if you buy $100 worth of GC you get two $10 coupons, and when you buy $50 worth of GC, you get double points for a J4U reward. If you are going to purchase two of the same gift card, you have to do it in two transactions to get both of your coupons. You have to belong to J4U to get this deal, and the deal does not apply to Jewel GC. They have Lowe's, Ace Hardware, JC Penny, Panera Bread, Chewy, and a few other restaurant GC available. No, Amazon, Walgreens, CVS, Best Buy, Walmart, Kohl's and Home Depot GC are not included in the deal. For a while yesterday, there was a glitch in their system, and they were issuing $20 off your next shopping trip if you purchased $50 worth of GC. That glitch is now fixed. Hope this helps, Nancy

I am just reminding people that today is the last day for the gift card deal at Jewel. For people that belong to J4U, there is also a deal that you can click, where you get 10 times the points when you purchase a DSW, Bath and Bodyworks or Macy's gift card.

Just noticed a new feature at my Jewel (Rand Rd, Arlington Heights). Was looking for a coupon to "clip" for something with a coupon sign -- and when I typed in the product, a little icon came up identifying its location in the store. I looked up a couple of other things, and it appears that everything can now be found on your phone. Don't know if there is a guarantee of it being in stock, but at least I'll know where to look. I'd always thought that there ought to be some way to use technology to make the stores searchable -- and they've done it.

If you look up an item on the website of Menard's or Home Depot or Lowes, you can see not only whether or not the item is in stock at your local store but also, if it is, exactly where it is by aisle and bay. Walmart's website will do the same. Target's, as far as I can tell, does not.

Jewel and other grocery stores could do this too, but they choose not to. Maybe their thinking is the same as Costco's: make you wander around and look at stuff you weren't planning on buying. Or provide this information only through their app so that you have to put yet another app on your phone.

On Jewel's website, if you want to know if something is in stock at your local store, you have to un-check the "Include Out of Stock" search filter, which is checked by default. Beyond that, there's no information on where items are located in the store.

On Target's website - if you're registered online indicating your local store, it will tell you if a particular item is in stock along with the aisle it's located in. If it's not in stock, the website will search for nearby stores.

Some highlights from this week's Jewel coupons:
Ziegler Honeycrisp and Gala cider $2.99/gal. These are separate coupons so you can buy one of each.
B.S. Chicken Breast 99¢/lb. These are usually giant breasts, but the last time they were on sale they were quite tender and juicy for the size.
Tillamook ice cream "half gallons" $2.99. Looks like there is a full selection of flavors.
    Russet taters 5lb 99¢
Jumbo pineapples $1.49 - wonder what size these are? 5's? 7's?
Snow crab $5.99/lb, cheaper than I've seen it for a few years.

Who says there aren't any good sales this week? (wish there was user tagging in BBCode)

You're welcome! Pineapples are size 5, large but very green. Another complicated deal to watch for: If you have a $5 off 4 Nabisco crackers, you can combine it with the $2.99 must buy 2 family size Nabisco coupon, but only crackers, not cookies. And one is buy 2 and the other is buy 4. So, for example, 2 family size Triscuits @ 2.99 (coupon price) plus 2 regular size flavored Triscuits @ 2.99 (sale price) will apply the $5 off for a total price of 6.96.

All of the pineapples I saw were green too. I decided to pass on them. I only got one thing yesterday. I might go to Jewel this afternoon and get some Brownberry bread and some ice cream. I might also get a gallon of cider. I do not need two gallons of cider. I'll look at the pineapple again too, to see if it is any riper. I still have most of the $.99 gold potatoes I got last week, and so I will pass on the other potatoes.

Late this afternoon my local Jewel (4250 N. Lincoln) had 20 pineapples: 1 reasonably ripe, 1 showing a little yellow near the bottom and 18 very green. This is about par for the course at this Jewel. When pineapples are reasonable priced, I buy one maybe one time out of three or four. I got lucky today.

I've checked two Jewel stores, and neither of them had the gala cider. I ended up getting a gallon of the honeycrisp cider yesterday, and the brownberry bread at the Chicago Avenue store. I also got a container of ice cream, a semi ripe pineapple, a mini frozen pizza, and some Healthy choice and Lean Cuisine frozen dinners that they had for 50% off. I saved 52% on this trip. There were quite a few frozen dinners on clearance yesterday.

Another coupon stack: General Mills cereals are $1.69, must buy 4 (no coupon) and there's a $1 off 2 GM cereals, net of $1.44/box. Pretty good for cereal that's 6.79 list price. Easy to get 73% savings today with the other coupons.

The list prices on packaged foods are laughable, or cryable if you get stuck buying when they're not on sale.

The flash sale + this week's J4U coupons make for another really cheap stack: Clip the coupons for 2 Ritz @ $2 (one time) and the $5 off 4 Ritz and Chips Ahoy (unlimited). Buy 2 Ritz and 2 flash sale Chips Ahoys @ $1.98. Get 4 packs for 74¢ each. Upwards of 80% savings I think.

If you don't have enough packaged foods yet, or own a teenager: $4 off pumpkin coupon with 2 family size Oreos, $1 off 3 family size Oreos, Ritz or Triscuits, 50¢ off milk with 2 family size Oreos (all one time), 3 for $10 family size Oreos and crackers (must buy multiples of 3). At least you'll have milk and a pumpkin. And the $4 is off any pumpkin including the cool turquoise ones.

Other, simpler deals of note: 19¢ squash, cabbage and baking potatoes. That's cheaper than last week's potatoes plus you get to select your own assortment. And the annual $1.99 eye of round is back. Jerky, anyone?

For their three day sale at Jewel that starts this Friday, they have eggs for $.99 a dozen, and pasta for $.98. They also have some good produce sales this week. I can definitely tell the difference between the eggs I get at Jewel for $.99 and the eggs that are $5 a dozen at the farmers market. If I get the $.99 eggs at Jewel they last me six weeks, because I am not a big lover of eggs, but the eggs I get occasionally at the farmer's market are way better. I would have no problem paying $2.50 for Lean Cuisine, because it rarely gets as cheap as $2, and I don't have a large freezer, and so I do not have enough room to buy 20 packages at one time. Right now Jewel has some of their Lean Cuisine and Healthy Choice frozen dinners on clearance for 50% off.

Did this today: $18.74, tax included, for a pumpkin, 2 family size Oreos, 1 family size Chips Ahoys, 2 regular size Oreos, 3 Pillsbury brownie mixes and 1 Pillsbury cake mix (99¢ each coupon.) I didn't buy the milk but apparently there was 50¢ off the 2 family size Oreos anyway, probably because it would be too complicated to program every possible thing defined as milk.

OK, presuming the 1987 Chevrolet Sprint starts on Saturday afternoon, I'm going shopping.
I'm going to hit Food4Less, Tony's Fresh Market, & Jewel-Osco. Here's the intended route. [N.B.: I do not live at 3203 N. Cicero Ave. It is close, but it is actually in a different Chicago ward.]
My question here is: I've clipped the Jewel forU coupon for 12-packs of 12-oz. soda. It looks to me like the price per 12-pack for Pepsi and 7-Up brands is $3.99 digital.
Does the three 12-pack limit apply to the total number of 12-packs obtained? Would it be possible to buy three Pepsi 12-packs and three 7-Up 12-packs for the $3.99 price?
I will have to logon again on Saturday in order to add the Saturday Sampler.
Thanks for the data. Reflecting on it, how long would eleven 12-packs of soda last here? I don't need that many.

I think you would only be allowed to purchase three 12 packs total, but I never purchase six 12 packs of pop at one time. They do have Cabot mac and cheese on sale for $1.50. This is similar to Kraft mac and cheese, but it is organic. They then have a $1 coupon for it on J4U, that can be use multiple times, and so you can get it for $.50. I looked at the Chicago Ave. Jewel in Evanston for it, and they were out of it, but I think I saw it at the Skokie Jewel on Tuesday.
