    Next week's Jewel highlights:
For Nancy, coupon milk 79 cents/half gallon, limit 1 though. Phone a vegan friend for a second one?
    Keebler cookies 2/$3, limit 2.
Pub burgers, 8 oz, 2 for 3. In the past I've found packages of burgers that were more like 11oz each which makes it a pretty good way to buy hamburger.
Bunch of 99 cent produce but not mushrooms this time. Last time I never found mushrooms in stock anyway. Head lettuce neither.

I just looked at my new personalized prices, and the only thing I can get excited about is the get 200 points if you spend $40. I am not sure if I am going to spend $40 at Jewel this week. This last week I spent $27 at Jewel. I am also going to use the $,79 milk coupon. I got a personalized price of $6.12 on the Edy's ice cream.

If you're shopping for ice cream at Jewel, I very highly recommend going to the Wilmette GBR/Linden location for Jeni's (they could be at other locations, I'll check as I need to go to another for something not in stock here). Their pints are only $7.99. Best price I've seen for this premium product anywhere. Fresh Farms has them at $9.99, they're $12/per on Jeni's website.

They're also slapping the 50% off stickers on meat products fairly liberally. It's a real gift to the hyper locals who can pop in several times a week instead of planning ahead (although freezing would work) since they put the discount on with 1-2 days left on the use-by.

Checked the pub burgers today, they are now very uniformly made and seem to be exactly 8 oz. Not a bad deal, $3/lb for decent burger. I used 2 of them to make taco meat tonight.
Nancy, $6.12 for Edy's?? That's nearly as bad as the personalized price I got for Signature Select potato chips. When I tried to find them in the store, the manager told me they had been discontinued months ago.

A tale of two Jewels ...

At my Jewel, I can reliably get rainchecks for stuff on sale or even those Saturday samplers. This is something my city friend finds spectacularly contradicts his experience.

Today I was at a Jewel in the city. There were no mini watermelons. There were no Saturday samplers, no rainchecks or substitutions.

On the way home, I stopped at Jewel in Highland Park. I obtained two mini watermelons, though the manager did say I was lucky because they had just arrived.

While I was checking out, I asked about the Saturday sampler. The cashier I have known for years yelled over to the manager. None were available, but I should get a raincheck. I had not even finished my transaction when the manager handed over a raincheck.

Those who shop city and suburban Jewels, do you experience such contrasting levels of service?

I think the question hinges on whether the sale was publicized through any outside advertisement without a clear disclaimer including "as supplies last." If such a reckless advertisement is issued, then at least one unit of the product should be available at the discount price through a raincheck.

I don't check any mailers or magazines, so the thought of asking for one completely blows my mind. Who the hell am I to lock in this deal I just stumbled upon? It's entirely up to management at the store (or via corporate policy) to just try and maintain a relationship. If cutting somebody slack pays off long-term, go ahead. But as a matter of right, only the rare unqualified inducement deserves a raincheck. I'm more than happy with the sales I see without advance knowledge. Especially the 30/50% off stickers on meats.

My brother, who lives in Rogers Park, is always astonished by not only the stories of service but even the range of products and quality of "made in-house" items at my suburban Jewels (Arlington Heights, Rolling Meadows, Palatine), vs. his in the city (near the Howard El).

I mostly either go to the Jewel on Chicago Ave. in Evanston, or the one on Green Bay in Wilmette. I prefer the Wilmette store. They have a few things that I like that the Chicago Ave. store does not carry. The Wilmette store also has crews during the day stocking shelves, whereas the Chicago Ave. store mostly uses the night crew to stock their shelves, and so when I go to the Chicago Ave. store to get a lost leader at 2:00pm, the shelf is often bare. I used to ask for a raincheck when that happened, but then when the pandemic hit us, Jewel quit issuing rain checks. I have not gotten back into the habit of asking for rainchecks. Sometimes I just wait to see if the Wilmette store has it a few days later. The Evanston store has better clearances though, although the Wilmette store has much better customer service. The Chicago Ave. store has their customer service person also handling self checkout, and customer service is never available after 10:00pm.

I go to the Howard store maybe three times a year. I quit going to it during the pandemic, when Jewel would not let us bring our own bags. The Howard store near the L, is in Chicago, and if you use one of their bags, they charge you $.07 a bag. That store is definitely a step down from both of the Wilmette stores. It does have cheaper prices on milk and bananas though, and it supposedly has some good clearance sales.

Did anybody buy any of the mini watermelons that are on sale right now? Are they any good? I bought one that was marked down to $1 last month at the Plaza Del Lago Jewel, and I ended up throwing it out. They are going to have pineapple for $.88 starting Wednesday.

I'm hitting Jewel for just a few things today. If they have one of those minis left, I'll buy one to try, but I'm not expecting much. You didn't mention why you threw it away. Was it unripe /rotten / anything?

Easiest way to pick a good pineapple? Smell it. I'll be sniffin a few of them for 88c. I think I'll be eyeballing their choice grade rib roasts for 6.99, too. The ad "preview" worked in my favor this week to save a few cents on that veggie list - last week was 99c, this week, 88c. I bet I'll save a whopping 3 dollars - but, the fun is in the hunt for me. I'm going shopping each week, might as well make it fun to save a few bux here and there.

They probably just relocated the clearance section to a different section of the store. The Chicago Ave. store in Evanston, has two clearance sections. One is right by the milk section, and the other one is in the seasonal aisle. The Green Bay Wilmette store has a clearance section in the back of the store next to the milk section, and has another one in the front of the store right by customer service.

Hi- I am in need of a new smart phone, and one of my sisters suggested I look into an Apple se phone, which she thinks would be easier for me to use than the ancient Alcatel I currently have. I noticed that Jewel has Apple gift cards with 10x the points through 4/19. I was wondering if anybody knows if Jewel carries $400 Apple gift cards, or even $100 ones, and do they do this deal frequently? The group that I sing with also sells Jewel cards as a fundraiser, and we have rehearsal tomorrow night, and so I could get $500 in Jewel gift cards, and the choral society would make $50 off of me. Thanks, Nancy

Had to chuckle when, at my Jewel yesterday, I overheard someone asking a nearby employee where the clearance section had been moved. After the person asking had left, I mentioned to the employee that this had been an item of discussion on a chat site. He noted that it was actually pretty common for them to move the clearance section -- clearly not as amused as I was by the person asking right after I read about it here. But now I know to look around if I can't find it.

Nancy, be careful with your plan. Many stores do not allow buying gift cards with other gift cards. You may have to buy your Apple gift cards with real money, not Jewel gift cards as you mentioned. Service desk should know. Good luck! And if it were me, I'd get a Motorola phone for about $200 rather than anything Apple, especially as you already are using an Android phone.

The three Jewels in question--Kinzie/Des Plaines, Roosevelt/Canal, Roosevelt/Wabash--are all in/near downtown; the latter two underwent some renovation in the last month, which may explain why they had extensive clearance options before/during the interior redesign--including the ever-elusive frozen food clearance sale--but also why, now that the excess inventory is cleared out, they don't have clearance shelves. Hopefully, it's temporary. Had to switch to Mariano's for my rando clearance food fix, sigh. (Joey Chestnut wing sauces, wut?)

Nice score! Can't say that was on offer at the South Loop Mariano's, but I did score some Bob's Red Mill millet, organic cotton diapers, and Korean wing sauce. Mariano's doesn't have the "surprise!" factor or price reductions that a good Jewel clearance shelf has, but it's much more consistent.

The only thing I have found in the clearance section that was worth my while since the beginning of the year was some Christmas coffee, I got for 75% off in January, and a few cans of tomatoes. I also got some healthy frozen dinners in the frozen food section a few times, including some Eating Well dinners. I have not had as much luck with the clearance section in Jewel lately. I did get six large boxes of Puffs for $3 right before the pandemic started, and I had a $.25 J4U coupon too. I just opened up the last box yesterday. I also had a few boxes of tissue I won in the Monopoly game that I used up recently. I also got a huge bottle of Herbal Essence shampoo for $2 that lasted me for six months. Mostly what I see on clearance at Jewel now is candy and other things loaded with sugar that I pass on.

I got a personalized price of $2.84 for a gallon of milk, and I did not get a personalized price for eggs. I did get $1.65 for a quart of yogurt though. I also got a personal price of $3.65 for Lean Cuisine which is a joke. I used to get a personalized price of $1.99 for healthy choice dinners, but I have not gotten that price for months. Most of the frozen dinners are now $3.50-$4.00. Healthy Choice used to be $2.99 when it was not on sale, and now it is $3.49. The only sale recently I saw on frozen dinners was Smart Ones, when they had them on sale 3/$5 this last week at Jewel. Jewel, I think also still has Tabatchnick frozen soup on sale B1G1F. I love their soup, but one of my favorite ones is split pea soup. When I went to the Wilmette Jewel on Saturday, all they had in stock was the low sodium split pea soup.

I just had periodontal surgery, and so I have to keep on a soft diet for a week. I will eat a lot of smoothies and pureed soup and yogurt for the next week.

Bananas are now $.69 a pound now, and organic ones are $.79. They are still $.59 and $.69 at Whole Foods.
