I got nine Monopoly tickets tonight, and I won a free package of Signature hamburger buns, and $1 J4U cash. I also got 4 tokens, and a few coupons, including one for Edy's ice cream that I will definitely use, and two other ones that I might use. I went to the Chicago Ave. Jewel, and I had my favorite cashier there Helene who has been there forever, but she rarely gives me extra Monopoly tickets. There was not much on sale at Jewel to excite me

I have little use for Jewel in general but I'd remembered they often have inexpensive corned beef this time of year. Sure enough, commodity-brand Reuben (a Tyson brand) was $1.99/lb for points, $2.99/lb flats, I got one of each. I think the Vienna and Harrington flats were about $7/lb which is not bad, either.

On a Facebook group that I belong to that focuses on deals, including Amazon and grocery stores, there are some unhappy people who are used to going to Jewel just to pick up a free item, and then getting a Monopoly ticket, and often doing it again. Apparently this year they are strictly enforcing the must spend $25 or buy a bonus ticket item to get a game ticket, and some people are not happy with this new policy.

I don't think there will be as many people playing the game this year. You have to belong to J4U in order to play the game, and you have to spend $25 or buy a bonus ticket item to get a game piece. I suspect that the game will last longer than May 4th, because they will have lots of game pieces left over.

I always check my receipt and see if I am supposed to get any bonus tickets. Last time I purposely bought some bonus ticket items, and so I knew I had some coming, and plus I spent $31 anyway. I had to remind the cashier that I was playing the Monopoly game.

I don't go through a lot of batteries, and usually I win at least one package of AA or AAA store brand in the Monopoly game. I've been having major problems with my remote for my tv, and I thought maybe I needed a new remote. I decided to first replace my batteries instead, and they had Duracel on sale, and they were bonus ticket too. Low and behold it worked. I am not getting any more store brand batteries again. I had always had minor problems with the remote since I had had it, and it was the store brand batteries all along.

Hi- I just realized on the coupons which you get with the Monopoly game, you have to scan them in. You cannot just save them, and hand the paper coupon to the cashier so she can scan them in like in years past. I am talking about the $.50 off Edy's ice cream and similar coupons. All of the coupons when you scan them they appear on your mylist, which you access my signing into J4U, and clicking on account, and then clicking on mylist. Apparently these do not appear on your regular list. I have a $1 off J4U on mylist, and so the next time I am at Jewel, I will see if it comes off. Also I discovered yes you have to purchase $25 worth of groceries or a bonus ticket item to get a game ticket, but you get a game ticket for each additional $25 worth of groceries up to $100, and so if you spend $150 on groceries, you only get four game tickets total and not six.

I used to give one of my friends the free coupons that I could not use such as the french bread, but I can't now unless she is willing to scan them in, which I am not sure if she is. I used to give her a ride on occasion to Jewel, but I have not since the pandemic started. I might offer to give her a ride to Jewel, and then buy the French bread and the hamburger buns myself, and just hand them to her. I am due to get my second Pfizer shot next Thursday or whenever they vaccines become available, and she is getting her first shot this Tuesday. This game is a lot more confusing this year.

Hi, Nancy, turns out there is a workaround to give coupons to your friend without their having to scan the coupons. You can log out of the Monopoly app (last item on the hamburger menu), then choose Play the Game and log in with her Just4You account. Of course, she'll need to share her account and password with you. Then scan the coupons and they will go onto her account and phone number.

Not ideal for you but makes it easy for your friend.

I really dislike Jewel but occasionally I'll place a curbside or delivery order for non-perishable or panty items. Today, I was punished for my folly, as my delivery order was canceled outright . . . after it had already been confirmed. There was no specific explanation in the email I received, just some generic verbiage that demand or availability could be the reason. Very odd, fairly annoying a bit surprising, even for a bottom-tier store like Jewel. I was able to pick up my items elsewhere but the experience affirmed for me why Jewel is almost always the last option.

I dunno. I used to like Jewel -- it really had personality -- but the changes over the years have not impacted the overall shopping experience there favorably. Based on my lousy experiences there, the place has a lot of negative associations for me. I guess that's the Grocery Industry in a nutshell. There's no grocery chain that conjures really positive feelings.

Like a lot of LTHers, it's the smaller more specialized stores that interest me the most. I just need to reset my expectations and move on. :(

Nothing surprises me anymore. Sometimes, after I get past the stage of ire about things like this, I start to wonder if something really bad happened to someone. My first thought about what could have happened, after seeing this disgusting white stuff on the ground today, is that the snow screwed everything up today.

    I will also say this:
Jewel website's customer service chat sessions have been fantastic. I think I've started a chat sesh with a csr three times for diff snafus with pickup orders, and every time they made things right very fast, very easy, and surprisingly, very satisfactory. I have no idea what they could do for you, but I might start a chat with them tomorrow and simply ask what the hell happened? I mean, a simple explanation is warranted, if you ask me. I'd imagine that something happened too fast for them to come up with a real reason, so you got a canned email. In my experiences, these online chats take about 5 minutes total, might be worth the ask, might not. I haven't been a huge Jewel fan in the past, but I will say that even before covid, I had started to turn back into a fan, and now, I'm a pretty big fan of how they've responded to this whole shitball of shitty shit, compared to the other stores that just farmed everything out to Instacart, which, imo, just flat out sucks, unless you like to gamble: "They were out of your preferred brand of peanut butter, so here's some ranch flavored sunflower seeds instead!" Buncha jerks.

I completely agree. When I've had issues, I've always called and without exception, have spoken to a friendly, competent person who resolved my issue almost immediately. Of course, the downside is that I've had to call frequently. But I also agree about IC. I won't go into the details but in my experience, their (website) support has been pretty brutal.

For thrifty shoppers in the Wadsworth-Beach Park-Waukegan-Gurnee area, the Jewel at Lewis and York House has pork butts for $.59/lb while they last. That particular store often has closeout meat specials. I passed because they are solution-added, but was tempted to compromise my principles this time.

Fully agree that Jewel is nearly the last resort for grocery shopping. If they didn't run so many specials, and if it weren't the closest supermarket to my house, I probably wouldn't go there much. For staples, it's fine. The store brand stuff is the same as everywhere else's store brands with a few exceptions. Name brands are often cheapest at Jewel with sales combined with coupons. Vegetables are abysmal usually, although fruits tend to be decent. Meat is a mixed bag, with occasional cheap beef roasts and chicken (store brand chicken is not solution-added) but bad pork. And I rarely buy anything in their liquor except ordinary beer. Hey, with all that it's better than Walmart.

The quality of the produce at Jewel depends on which store you go to. I mostly go to either the Chicago Ave, store in Evanston or the Green Bay Road store in Wilmette. I prefer the Wilmette store, but the Evanston store is closer for me. The Wilmette store has better produce, and has some stuff such as Tabernick frozen soup that the Evanston store does not have. The last time I was at the Evanston store I passed on the 1% milk because I was there on 3/11, and all of the milk was going to expire on 3/11 or 3/16. I ended up getting skimmed milk instead. This store frequently has milk that is getting ready to expire, and they never mark it down. I occasionally go to the Plaza Del Lago store in Wilmette too, and that store has a decent produce section, but the store is smaller, and does not have as much of a selection.

I rarely buy meat at Jewel except for chicken sausage. I buy most of my chicken at Whole Foods, and I don't eat a lot of red meat. I did buy two smoked turkey drumsticks at Jewel right before Thanksgiving, and I still have one of them sitting in the freezer. The one I did eat was only so so.

The reason I do the majority of my grocery shopping at Jewel is because it is the most convenient for me. I don't care for Valli as much as Jewel, and I can't afford to buy all of my groceries at Whole Foods, and plus the Monopoly game draws me into Jewel. I buy mostly what is on sale. Hope this helps, Nancy

The Jewel ad we get delivered to my condo building on Tuesdays is only 4 pages now, and so I go online to look at the ad. Jewel has Angel Soft toilet paper which is normally $7.99 on sale for $3.99, but you have to buy two packages to get it for that price, and it is a bonus ticket item. Today I spent $41, and I was supposed to get 7 game tickets, but the cashier gave me 12. I won a free bottle of water, free three month subscription to Peacock premium service, 14 tokens, and one coupon I can use. The rate I am going, it is going to take me until the end of the contest to get enough tokens to get a $25 GC. Hopefully they will have a double ticket day in not too long. I know that people are upset because they are going in the store to get one or two items, and walking out with no tickets.

On one of the Facebook groups I belong to, another member of the group is a cashier at Jewel. She just mentioned today that if you don't have a J4U account, and so cannot enter the code for the Monopoly coupon, then it can be entered in at the register, but somebody from CS has to come over to do it. Apparently they got a lot of complaints from people who do not have J4U accounts. I know there are a lot of seniors that have a J4U account, and don't have a smart phone, and don't realize you can manually enter in the code, and there are probably lots of people who do not realize you have to enter in the code to use the coupon. I thought the number of Monopoly tickets you are eligible for, only show up if you enter in your J4U phone number?

I know some people refuse to open up a J4U account because of privacy concerns. They don't want Jewel knowing what they are buying. What if one of those people gets the million dollar ticket, and does not realize it? Hope this helps, Nancy
