I was going to post in the Exploring Land of Plenty thread but thought Park to Shop deserved its own thread

Rene G wrote:Several years ago I didn't have much luck finding Sichuanese ingredients at HKM, right around the time CM increased their stock. Time to revisit.

If my Saturday visit to Park to Shop/Hong Kong Market is any indication definitely time for a revisit. Multiple brands/types of Szechuan peppercorns, including green Szechuan peppercorns. Multiple douban pastes made with broad bean (fava) and the array of dry goods, rice, sauces etc was dizzying including loose bulk rice and peanuts.

Produce, butcher counter, fresh fish including live lobster tank for $10.99 and "Vancouver" crab for $6.88, even a Chinese BBQ kiosk offering duck, char siu etc.

Couple of cautions, the store is huge, easily the size of a Jewel, and if you go on a Saturday morning best put your Big Boy Pants on as Chinese Grandmothers don't play. :)~

HKM may have changed hands as it is now called Park to Shop Supermarket. I plan on going midweek morning to really explore when, presumably, less hectic.

Been there a few years ago, tons of stuff, I didn't even have a clue what it was for.
Usually I am at Chinatown Market on Archer or Chicago Oriental Market on Canal.
'Bible' Tripe and Duck Tongues are great finds as well as real Chinese wine, I have grown fond of the one in the crock over the years for cooking. Never use Cooking Wine!

A Park To Shop is opening in Aurora on Route 59 by the Best Buy. I saw a sign for it today, but no opening day has been announced yet.

Yup, I saw that when I searched for an opening date. Depending on how long each tenant's lease is, it might take five or more years before it's complete.

Appears a Park to Shop has replaced the sagging Asian grocery at 4579 N Broadway. I have not been but if its half as good as the one on Wallace it will be a gem.

They also are taking over/took over the former Win Sing/Richwell supermarket at 1835 S Canal St across the river from Chinatown proper.

Park to Shop has also taken over the former China Town market on Archer.
    Not much has changed.
Yesterday Scallops in the shell and large Surf Clams.
But they have expanded the market on Canal and no longer sell alcohol there.
Yesterday found the space formerly occupied by China Place Liquor vacant.
Once again, I am without a source for Chinese Wine!

    Hi,

I was there yesterday to pick up BBQ buns at Victoria Bakery, whose remains there despite all the changes at the store.

What I like about this bakery is easy access and parking.

Park to Shop aurora has opened. However food court vendors won’t open until 8/5. Shelves are not yet fully stocked and had inventory/system problems on opening day.

Assi Plaza n Niles (on Milwaukee just north of Dempster) is now J Plaza with a Park To Shop. I haven't been in yet. Recent years I've been in Joong Boo more frequently - closer, cleaner, similar selection.

Hopefully the new owners fix up the store as the prior Assi Plaza was basically turning into Golf Mill with half the food vender stalls empty and the look and feel of the store looked dated and not a pleasant shopping experience with no money spent on upkeep.

We stopped in on our way back, and the only visible change was less stuff: dinner empty shelves, and no stacks of sale items near the entrance. And the bakery at the front is gone.

But we heard another customer talking to an employee, and they just started making changes, hope to finish in a month or so, the bakery will be inside the main store.

Also I noted that there is a banner by the street that says "soft open."

The fire was contained to the inside and crews are hoping to shut the fire with gas.

Either I'm misreading this line from the WGN piece or I have a poor understanding of firefighting.

This may be old news, but it escaped my notice until today - the former Assi on Milwaukee south of Golf is now a Park to Shop.

Park To Shop in Aurora - food court.

    Anyone got any "must tries?"

I have an hour and a half to kill a few times per week right around the corner.

Posted over in the western burbs dining about my favorites.

Ah Yin. - fantastic Chinese bbq plates, spare ribs, pork belly, etc. top notch.

Spot to the left of them changes names alot. But their sakt and pepper pork chops are craveable

In the same strip mall you have a solid pho place, conveyor belt sushi and Lao Szechuan. Storefronts seem to be filling up. Good to see a mall not dying.
