Hi- Does anybody know when the city of Chicago and Green City markets are going to open up? I wonder if they are going to have Daley Plaza and Federal Plaza this summer? I know they did not open up last summer. It sounds like all of the farmers markets this summer at least in the beginning of the summer are pretty much operate as they did last summer with the COVID precautions. Wilmette and Wheaton are going to open up on 4/17. I don't know how much produce they are going to have that early. There is potentially going to be a Thursday market in downtown Glencoe this summer too. They are just waiting for village approval.

Here is a list of the French markets and the dates they are opening up.

Their website says "GCM Lincoln Park will reopen on Saturday, May 1 and GCM West Loop will open on Saturday, June 5 for our 2021 season! Check out our calendar for GCM's 2021 schedule."

Green City Market was hopping this morning on opening day. I don't think I saw a maskless person in the entire ~90 minutes I was there. Plenty of applicable signage and people socially distancing, though maybe not exactly 6 feet in every direction at all times. But respectful, safe and friendly. Dogs and strollers in abundance. Clearly, there seemed to be ample pent up demand for springtime market activity, even among non-shoppers.

Bought some stuff from Ellis, Froggy Meadow, Frillman, Nichols, GAI Ghee, Smits and River Valley Ranch. Single most expensive purchase was the parking, which remains out of GCM's control.

Didn't get any bread but it was good to see several sellers, including my favorite, Middle Brow, who had been absent from GCM in 2020. You can order ready-to-eat food -- and several stalls were slinging some good-looking fare -- but as of now, you're not permitted to eat it within the confines of the market.

    Yay, market season! :)

The Lincoln Square farmers' markets are starting up this week. Tuesday morning (7 am to 1 pm) and Thursday afternoon 3 pm to 7 pm. The first half hour is for seniors and the immunocompromised. There appear to be a few new vendors while all of the stronger fruit and vegetable vendors from last year are back.

Does anyone know what happened to Green Acres? They are no longer on the vendor list for Evanston or Green City. We got their CSA last year but haven't heard a peep out of them since December (their last post on social media). They've been a staple at the Farmers Market for years and always had some really interesting and unusual stuff. I hope that Covid didn't put them under!

According to NFriday in the Evanston Farmer's Market thread, the Green Acres folks decided to retire.

Apparently WBEZ had a discussion about Chicago area farmer's markets for 2021 last week. It is on their website. Here is a link for it.

They interviewed the managers of the the Evanston and Ravinia farmer's markets.

I noticed that it looks like the Daley Plaza market is going to take place starting on 5/27. I don't see the Federal Plaza market listed on the city's website. I also took a look at the Wicker Park farmer's market website, and it looks like Nichols are not going to be there this year

My husband and I went to the Wicker Park market yesterday and forgot till we got there that Nichols had a dispute with the market (I believe in 2019) that ended with them leaving the market. It's too bad for many reasons, including the fact that aside from Iron Mountain there isn't another "anchor" vendor with a wide selection of produce.

It was actually last fall that they had a dispute with Nichols. The first week thy found out thy could not set up at the market, thy ended up setting up somewhere else in front of a restaurant, and ended up giving most of their produce away for free.

Any word about whether we'll actually be able to browse the markets? Last year, at least out where I am, you had to call ahead and they would hand you your order at the entrance -- no wandering at all. Any guidelines out there at this point? Order in advance? Wander but with masks?

Throughout the pandemic, Evanston Farmers' Market has allowed masked people in to browse the market. Only recently, some have been allowing touching the produce; at others, you just walk up to the rope and point. Rumors have it that restrictions may further loosen soon.

The only farmer's market that was anywhere near me that required you to preorder last year was Glenwood in Chicago. I never made it there last summer. The great majority of the markets made you wear a mask and practice social distancing. They all said that they were not allowing people to touch the produce until after they paid for it, but the one time I was at the Wilmette market last summer that rule was not being enforced, although it was at Evanston. Go online and look at the websites of whatever markets you visit, and you should be able to determine how the market is being run this summer. I personally do not know of any markets this summer where you have to order everything in advanced. All of the markets as far as I know still make you wear a mask, although that rule will probably be relaxed in the next few weeks. At the Evanston market, the manager hopes that she can do away with the mask requirement soon, but right now the city has told her that masks are still required.

I am just curious if people are buying less at the farmer's market this year. It seems like last year, people were eating at home more, and they considered the farmer's market a safer place to get their produce than Jewel, and it seemed like the farmers in general had no problem selling their stuff, and people were signing up for CSA like crazy because they liked knowing where there stuff was coming from.

Granted there were probably some people that normally went to the farmer's market last year, that decided to go out of town this weekend, but it seems like there are more people showing up this season that don't cook, and just buy already prepared stuff, and I don't think people are cooking as much at home as they did last summer. Last year every body was gardening, and it was hard to get plants and gardening supplies. Today at the Evanston market, I just did not see a lot of people looking at Teresa's plants, and she still had a ton left when I left the market at noon. Also Henry still had lots of stuff to sell, and Jon First still had at least 20 bunches of asparagus he had not sold yet, and I am sure they ended up at the food pantry.

Flour and yeast is a lot easier to find than it was a year ago too. I don't think a lot of people are making sour dough bread like they did last year. I think a lot of people assume the pandemic is over, and they can go back to their previous life. Hopefully things will pick up at the farmers market when they finally lift the mask requirement. When I got there today, there was a gentleman who brought his two kids who were both wearing masks, but for some reason this gentleman did not want to wear one, and he was arguing with the people at the front entrance about it.

I get emails from Bob's Red Mill, and I just got an email today from them. You can nominate your favorite farmers market as the best by 6/30. You have to tell them why you think it is the best. The five markets with the most nominations, will each win $5,000 from Bob's Red Mill. Here is the link to nominate your favorite market.

I reread the rules for the contest at Bob's Red Mill, and you can nominate your favorite farmers market, but five markets are randomly selected to win $5,000. It is not the markets that have the most votes win. I took a look at the list of markets nominated in Illinois, and there are five markets I believe nominated from Illinois, including Kankakee, Naperville, Elgin, Palos Heights, and one market outside of the Chicago area. Evanston, Oak Park and Green City have not been nominated yet. You have to download a picture of your market when you submit it.

Logan Square FM back to normal this past weekend. No masks required if vaxxed (from 10am on, 9-10 for high risk/masked people) and dogs allowed. No line to get in at about 10:30-45....lines have been about a block long at that time in weeks past.

The Printer's Row market is up and running. Saturdays 9-1 (closed on 7/3). The old operation was quite bad in 2019 (last time open), and they're back with a blast with new folk running it. Many more vendors, although for obviously reason most don't have much range yet. The place is rocking, the local folk are coming out any buying. Great vibe. On the first the vendors were under prepared and much stuff was sold out very early. The sellers are bring more product, but even so the flowers I wanted were gone by 9:15. Come early.
