AKA stem lettuce, asparagus lettuce, celery lettuce, or Chinese lettuce, and in Mandarin, I think it's called wosun. I haven't found it at Super H-Mart on Oakton, nor at Assi Plaza on Milwaukee. Is there any store that has it in Chicago area?

I don't know if Henry Brockman at the Evanston farmers market ever carries it or not. His wife is from Japan, and he grows a lot of Asian veggies. If you ever get to the Evanston market on Saturdays, you might ask him. He is located on University Ave. He will be there tomorrow. Hope this helps, Nancy

I think I have bought Chinese lettuce from Henry before. It might have been in June. It has been a few years since I have bought any from him.

I asked Henry today, and he told me that he has grown celtuce before, but he does not have any planted this year.

I spotted this odd looking vegetable at Park to Shop in Niles (formerly Assi) a few weeks ago. It had a non-English label and looked really crummy but I looked it up when I got home and learned the term celtuce and have kept an eye out for it which wasn't long since...

Sure enough, I spotted it again at Joong Boo in Glenview last weekend and tried it tonight. It's a 20 inch long stalk that tapers from 2 inches at the cut end to a few leaves, sort of resembling an oversized asparagus stalk. I got right into cutting some coins and munching: not much there for flavor, a bit of lettuce bitter backnote, juicy-crisp texture. I peeled the next few inches and found the bitterness knocked way back.

This would be a good substitute for cucumber. Neat veggie, worth picking up, probably fun to bring to a gathering. The ones at Joong Boo are individually wrapped and looked quite nice, $2.99/lb, I think. I didn't expect to see a thread about it already, lol.
