Were they any good? If you didn't buy, could you see how they looked?

I don't need any, and so I did not look at them that carefully, but I saw somebody else buying some. The Canadian ones I bought last week for $4.99 were okay when I bought them, but they are not as good now.

Jewel Round Lake Beach yesterday, $4.99 for Stemlit "High Altitude" "Half Mile Closer to the Moon" cherries. Excellent flavor, texture and size. I think I now spend more on produce than on meat or dairy. Never used to be that way.

I am surprised that the cherries are still in good condition. The last time I went to Jewel they were $5.99 a pound, and I still had some left from the week before when they were $4.99. I still have peaches and three small melons from the farmer's market, and two pints of blueberries I got at Jewel last time I was there to eat. I spent $16.50 just on fruit in the last week.

I was at the Wilmette Jewel on Green Bay tonight, and cherries were $5.99 a pound. I actually put the smallest bag of cherries they had in my cart, but then I decided I did not want to spend $13 on cherries. I would rather spend the money at the farmers market on local fruit. The cherries were passable.

Erratic spring weather has wiped out most of this spring's display of blossoms on Japanese cherry trees in Jackson Park in downtown Chicago, in what the Tribune describes as "a big blow for cherry blossom fans."

Drove around the Japanese garden at the Museum of Science of Industry yesterday, I could see native Red Buds, but no cherry blossoms.

There is always next year, right?

It should be noted cherries in mid-winter 2022-2023 were offered for as low as 99 cents per pound. I believe they were grown in Chile.

The news reported on it. The schizophrenic spring weather impacted the blossom development and high winds stripped the ones that did pop up from the trees.

We went to Osco Drug today and picked up a bag of these Washington State cherries. Nice color and good flavor!

I was at a Meijer's in Benton Harbor, Michigan on Saturday, and they had California cherries for $3.99 a pound. My sister has upick black and rainer cherries for $4.99 a pound currently right now. She was doing lots of upick business this last weekend. I picked four pounds of cherries yesterday to take back with me, and they were really good. My brother in law says he currently has 31 different varieties of cherries. They just started upicking sour cherries today too. Their sweet cherries at their fruit stand are $5.95 a pound. Their sour cherries are $1.49 a pound. They are going to have upick cherries for another week. They are located right off of exit 39 the Coloma exit on I94.

we went to your sister's place this weekend! they let us pick the sour already even though the website said they wouldn't be ready till next week. we got rainier, dark, and sour, about 10 lbs, and so far we've enjoyed a cherry clafoutis, sour cherry ice cream, and many many handfuls. delicious, and much more dimension to the flavor than the ones i bought at whole foods last week.

I am glad you made it to my sister's for upick. She had lots of Mexicans upicking on Sunday, and a few Asians. The probably had 70 cars in the parking lot, but then it started pouring a few hours later for 15 minutes, and my BIL said most of their upick customers decided to leave. Hopefully they had some more upickers later in the afternoon. I thought the black cherries were better than the Rainer ones, but they were all way better than what you get at Jewel right now. This weekend there should be some Michigan cherries at the farmer's market, but they are usually $7-$8 a pint.

You got enough cherries that you did not have to pay the picking fee. My sister started charging a picking fee, because a family of five would eat cherries off of the tree nonstop, and then would only end up with two pounds to take with them, and so they would eat for free way more than they would pay for.

This is the reason I am thrilled that I sell wholesale and not retail. Many people have no shame.

My sister charges $5 per person over the age of 6 to pick the cherries, but for each five pounds you pay for, you get one of the picking fees eliminate, and so if a couple purchases 10 pounds of cherries, they don't have to pay the picking fee.

79 cents/lb if you're willing to brave Jerry 's Fruit & Garden. The Washington cherries they had for 99 cents last week were quite good, large, ripe and meaty.

In usual Jerry's fashion a customer used their cart to violently ram my cart out of their way. Fortunately this time I wasn't standing behind it. On the plus side Jerry's had a huge selection of 4" plants for $1.50 ($5 to $6 elsewhere) along with the biggest chenille plants I've ever seen for $10.

And that is why I stopped going to Jerry's. I learned not to use a cart, hand basket only. That allows me to be more nimble in the early bottleneck. Doesn't stop people from using their cart as a ramming device on my legs.

I picked up a couple pounds of cherries from Jewel. They are decent but not transcendent. I'm okay paying a few bucks for decent cherries. I got a pint in my CSA a week or two ago and they were tiny and not very good. Not a good use of that $7 or whatever it was. I love supporting local farms but wouldn't have bought these at the market if I had a choice.

The Rainer and black sweet cherries that I picked on my sister's farm in Michigan last Sunday were really good. I only have one more serving left. I might buy some at the farmer's market tomorrow, and then pick up some more at Jewel. The black cherries were better than the Rainer ones. Rainers bruise really easy, and so my sister only sells them upick. Tomorrow should be the last day she has upick sweet cherries on her farm. She should have upick sour cherries through 7/3. Has anybody seen any Rainer or Queen Anne cherries in the grocery store? How much are they?
    Thanks, Nancy

Concerning Jerry's, they are eight miles from where I live, and it takes me 30 minutes to drive there, and so I never go there unless I am in the neighborhood. If I went to Golf Mill more often, Jerry's would be more convenient for me. One of the other reasons I rarely go there, is because of the parking lot. They have tons of elderly people in their 80's that should not be driving anymore that I have to dodge in the parking lot, plus the store gets so crowded. A lot of the produce that they sell is stuff that Jewel and Mariano's will not sell because it is past its prime.

Not quite: the big chains such as Jewel have first call at the produce wholesale market. Everyone else gets what they leave behind, and Jerry's likely, to keep prices low, takes stuff with the shortest expiry.

Same for other small local markets like Lewis and Garden Fresh. Although sometimes they hit the sweet spot with really cheap unadvertised specials on really good fruits. As does Jerry's sometimes. Times when wholesalers are way oversupplied? And smaller companies can pivot on prices faster than big ones.
