How have I not noticed this? Costco now has Kewpie (in a slightly larger but otherwise similar squeezy bottle) however it is "Japanese Style" mayonnaise made in the U.S. of A. Haven't tried it but expect to be disappointed. One step forward, two steps back.

I have seen this new container but had not looked at the source.
Invariably when you change the source of agricultural products, due to water, and other ingredient's, the taste changes.
I used to like Asahi ‘SuperDry’ beer. While at Kuni’s many years ago, I noticed the SuperDry had changed, sure enough brewed in Canada. Now it’s brewed in Italy and it’s a pale shadow of it’s former self.
Same for Guinness XXX, questioned Diego and was told they shipped the brew in containers to Canada and bottled in Canada.
The human palat is very very sensitive.
A fact that the bean counters could care less.
For now, I will purchase my Kewpie at Mitsuwa until they no longer have Japanese production.

H-Mart has better prices on Japanese Kewpie.

What Is the Best Mayo and Why Is It Kewpie?

It’s worth noting that a made-in-the-USA formulation of Kewpie, introduced in 2017, is flavored with yeast extract rather than MSG and does include sugar. For the truest Kewpie experience, seek out bottles imported from Japan.

Haven't tried it but when I saw it at Costco a few weeks back, I made sure to check the ingredients. And it did contain msg which was a pleasant surprise.

"Yeast extract" is just another form of MSG.

It's a source of umami for sure. But I prefer the neutral flavor of MSG vs yeast extract.

I was shopping at an international store in Mesa, AZ this morning. Watch out. There is a brand of Japanese mayonnaise that looks identical to Kewpie but is NOT Kewpie.

H-Mart had Kewpie Mayo is at least three locations in their Mesa store. In the past, it has been really difficult to even find it in the past in their stores.

Kewpie makes some really good salad dressing. My favorite is Deep Roasted Sesame Dressing.

Note that Woodmans has US Kewpie for $4.09 at Kenosha and 3.29 at Buffalo Grove. Kenosha has Japanese Kewpie, BG does not. All this according to the website, did not verify in person.

And I've noticed that US producers are far more into "clean label" ingredients like yeast extract vs MSG, cultured celery powder vs sodium nitrite, etc than Asian producers are.
