    This is nice news.

I've long lost my need to kvetch about this stuff/cajole people to shop markets. Still, like I say, good news.

For one thing, there's no reason from a weather/seasonality/technology perspective that you cannot stock a farmer's market in Chicago in April. Hell, I was at the NYC Greenmarket a few weeks ago, and there was more than enough that one wouldn't starve as a locavore, and this was February. For another thing, even here, there's like a whole season's worth of crops, the earliest greens, ramps, ferns, morels, that come and go before markets even open. There is stuff that can be sold in April.

So, again, great news re GCM opening early.

The city's a little more limited in options but we hit up Woodstock and Crystal Lake farmer's markets year-round (indoors in colder months). They have hydroponic produce, potatoes, onions, eggs, pickles and preserves, specialty meats and prepared foods. For anyone who hasn't been, the Crystal Lake outdoor farmer's market on Sunday mornings is well worth a visit (once the outdoor season starts). They have bloody mary's/margaritas available for walking around, food trucks and tons of vendors from Northern IL/Southern WI. Woodstock has a Saturday market that's a little smaller in scale but also long on charm.

Lincoln Square farmers markets start May 2 Tuesday mornings and Thursday afternoons. Markets are being moved to a parking lot in the 4500 block of Lincoln Avenue because the regular site will be used as a staging area for rebuilding the plaza next to the Western Brown Line stop. Both markets are run by the the Lincoln Square Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce.
